To think Labour is not the party of the working people.

I voted for Labour as I believed their election pledge of being a party for the working people but genuinely I can’t think of one thing, since they’ve been in power, that they’ve done to help me (a single working mother on around £42k a year)! I get zero help from UC, these mystical breakfast clubs don’t exist, people aren’t employing people due to their ridiculous NI implications, they aren’t building affordable housing, energy prices are insanely high and all they talk about is grants (which won’t affect me as I live in a flat)! Genuinely I can’t think of one thing that they’ve done to help working people in the middle. Why are Labour sticking their heads in the sand? Why do they refuse to help the squeezed working class? They are stopping this economy from thriving - as
nobody can afford to spend anything extra (treats, holidays, meals out etc etc)!

@PandoraSocks oh yes I forgot about them!

Would that also apply to those who would love to work but can't for various reasons such as disability?

That’s a good question, it would be good to be able to make disability benefit income similar to minimum wage, but at the same time we need to drastically cut the range of disabilities you can get benefits for.

I thought Kemi wasn’t popular although I haven’t read much recently.

She's neck and neck with Starner in the last head to head polling. More popular than the other party leaders too. Hopefully her popularity will start to feed into the Conservative party polling in time.

dinbin · 24/03/2026 21:42

@TheNuthatch but Starmer isn’t popular!

PandoraSocks · 24/03/2026 21:43

TheNuthatch · 24/03/2026 21:39

I think you're wrong about Badenoch's survival. Starmer on the other hand...

Yes I know Starmer is toast, no dispute there. But I think Badenoch will be on borrowed time if the predictions are right. We shall see.

I have been looking at what i would get if i lost my job after decades paying in -c£350
for just six months and child benefit. No help with energy bills. I would still be on the hook to pay back the child benefit I was paid when my income was higher in my tax return.
Were I single mum with 4 kids some of them born before 2017 - i would get c £400 each c 400 for myself. Potentially hundreds more if one or more of the kids has Adhd/autism. DLA is not
covered by the benefitscap and help with housing costs on a LA flat. In addition possibly my kids could potentially inherit the tenancy. That is compared to a loan on the interest of my mortgage if I have worked and scrimped to buy a house so I can hope to keep a roof over my head.
Plus if i work 16 hours i get to keep my benefits and child maintenance does not affect them either.
It really feels as though it is a two tier benefit system - insanely generous to some and piteous to others - mainly those who have paid in.
In Germany people who lose their jobs get a significant proportion of their salary for a time but the benefits are less lavish for life style claimants.

This really is how it should be. Working should be the norm for everyone. Anyone unprepared to work should get vouchers for the most basic standard of living. The money saved should be ploughed into proper benefits which reflect years of paying in in tax, not the current pittance.

RichardTice · 24/03/2026 21:44

Kirbert2 · 24/03/2026 21:29

Yep.

Not a fan of Kemi at all.

Why?

It's tricky because having a disability can be expensive as can caring for a child who is disabled which is the whole point of disability benefits. It would also cost money to implement a whole new system, including vouchers and vouchers can also be misused if someone is determined to misuse benefits such as selling food vouchers for cash.

There is a difference between feeling jealous and feeling something is fundamentally unjust.

Indeed. It’s not jealousy. Where are we as a country if we value the person sat on her arse more than the person out working? Totally f*ed, that’s where.

TheNuthatch · 24/03/2026 21:48

dinbin · 24/03/2026 21:42

@TheNuthatch but Starmer isn’t popular!

The polling I referred to is head to head, leader vs leader. Starmer may not be popular, but he still beat Farage for example in a head to head.
The polling question is who would you prefer as PM, then they compare leaders head to head. When its Starmer vs Badenoch, they tie.

BIossomtoes · 24/03/2026 21:48

dinbin · 24/03/2026 21:26

But aren’t a lot of the Reform party now Tories who have deflected & who didn’t “fix” immigration?

Sssshhh, you’re not supposed to notice inconvenient things like that.

Kirbert2 · 24/03/2026 21:49

RichardTice · 24/03/2026 21:44

Why?

I have a disabled child. She clearly thinks very little of disabled people.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 24/03/2026 21:50

Also give your head a shake if you are jealous of those with SEN kids and DLA payments. Applying for my autistic son who I wish wasn't autistic!

The examples are both people are working.

16 hours a week isn’t ‘working’ though is it?

Indeed. Might well use DLA to replace all the kitchen cupboards my son has broken if we get it. Or the wallpaper he has ripped....

She's doing brilliantly

I think we have different definitions of brilliantly 😆

BlackRowan · 24/03/2026 21:56

pinkpalmleaves · 24/03/2026 21:25

@BlackRowanI answered your question. What is Labour doing to help working people?

Labour is trying to improve the economy absolutely killed by the Tory jokers and Farage with his Brexit pipe dream.
they have not actually increased taxes on working people.
I'm a very high earner btw, so should complain about Labour and yet last time I was royally screwed was the Tory government, not by Labour

what exactly did you expect from them given decades of mismanagement by Tories, to turn it around in a year

i am a working person by the way, too

Are you still filling it in? If so, don't be afraid to ask for help with how to fill it in if you haven't. It is so overwhelming and complicated.

Oh yeah, when my son's DLA backpay finally went through, we bought a dryer to help manage the constant washing due to his incontinence.

I'm still waiting for this lavish lifestyle...

You do realise UC works on earnings and not hours? The 16 hour thing is outdated.

dinbin · 24/03/2026 21:57

@Bist how many hours would you class as working?
