AIBU to cancel a visit to Turkey?

Booked flights to Turkey about 3 months ago. We bought tickets that we can cancel and get most of money refunded. Have not yet booked accommodation.
The Foreign Office advice is that the only part of Turkey they advise not to travel to is the part next to the border with Syria.
However, in view of the volatile situation in the Middle East and the fact Turkey shares a large border with Iran, would it be best to cancel? Can't quite decide. It was going to be a holiday of a lifetime. We tried to go to Turkey 30 years ago and had to cancel that as I had a slipped disc.

I would still go, assuming you are not going anywhere near the border. Turkey is a huge country.

iamfedupwiththis · 24/03/2026 16:57

I presume you are going to a Coastal area and not a town that borders Syria?

loveawineloveacrisp · 24/03/2026 16:59

I'm going in October and still planning to go if the situation is as it is today.

Pollqueen · 24/03/2026 17:03

Assuming you're not holidaying on the Iranian border then yes, I would still go. Millions holidayed in Turkey whilst war was raging in Syria, myself included

Doseofreality · 24/03/2026 17:04

I was in Istanbul last week. The airport was fully functioning and busy, all was perfectly normal.

Pistachiocake · 24/03/2026 17:05

Can I ask where you got refundable tickets? Because I always found flights were non-refundable, and only accommodation could be?
Only asking as whether you can definitely get this would be a factor IMO.

herbalteabag · 24/03/2026 17:07

I would still go. The border with Iran is a long way from the usual holiday areas, and Turkey is a big country.

Thank you all! I appreciate all of your posts and feel encouraged to carry on with our plans. We had got a touring holiday planned to Pamukkale, Cappadocia, Catalhoyuk, Ephesus, Pergamon and Istanbul. We were going to do it Race around the World style with trains and Flixbuses!

Booked plane tickets with Turkish airlines and paid extra to allow cancellation with small penalty up to 12 hours before departure. We did this as my Father In Law is very frail, and we felt that we might need to use the cancellation option if his health takes a turn for the worse.

My son lives in Bursa, I’m visiting in May. It is safe.

Berlinlover · 24/03/2026 17:21

Go on your holiday.

I was wondering why it was the holiday of a lifetime and not a two week AI in Bodrum xx

JehovasFitness · 24/03/2026 17:50

It wouldn’t occur to me to cancel. I’m eying up Cyprus if the prices drop.

What sort of danger do you think you’ll be in?

CombatBarbie · 24/03/2026 17:55

When I booked Egypt I just made sure I was nowhere near the upper border. With turkey, I looked at borders.....still went, still had a great time.

Part of me just thinks its a veiled attempt to destroy tourism in that area.

Glampinggirl · 25/03/2026 07:43

I live in Turkey 8 months of the year. Here now. Absolutely nothing to worry about. It’s a huge country and a safe one. Enjoy your holiday

We're considering a trip to Turkey this year and also are unsure. I have no worries about safety whilst we are there (as pp said, the Syrian border is a very long way from tourist destinations). My concern is what would happen if there was disruption to flights once we were there (similar to the situation in Dubai). My understanding is that travel insurance would not cover disruption due to acts of war so we would be left to fund our own flights home which could be very expensive. We also have caring commitments at home that would make it very stressful and difficult if we were significantly delayed (as all the people we'd usually call on to help out in an emergency will be travelling with us). I'm keeping an eye on the situation. In your position I think I'd be considering how much of a problem it would be if I couldn't get home at the planned time- if an extra few weeks in Turkey wouldn't be a big problem I'd go for it.

JulietteHasAGun · 25/03/2026 08:09

DH is going in a few weeks and going to a non touristy area about 50 miles from the Iran border. He doesn't seem bothered at all.

JulietteHasAGun · 25/03/2026 08:10

PP mentioned being stuck there is flight issues...I think you can get a train back via Paris if necessary. Friends of mine took the train to Istanbul and back a few years ago for a holiday.
