AIBU to think there is no way to store clothes after ironing without them wrinkling?

I consider myself a pretty competent adult but I cannot work out how to store freshly ironed clothes without them ending up a creased mess again. I've tried folding, rolling, hanging - nothing works. Well, hanging works sometimes but I can't hang absolutely everything. Has anyone got a foolproof method or is it just impossible?

I'm not going to stop ironing, I don't like wrinkled clothes.

I iron before I wear something. I don't see any point in doing it before storing for the reasons you describe.

CandiedPrincess · 24/03/2026 14:54

I iron about 2-3 times a year max. Everything gets put away and if it needs ironing before wearing, then that's when I'll do it.

Can never understand standing there ironing for hours on ends just to put stuff away and maybe not wear it for weeks or months.

This is what I've started to do but it's a pain every morning having to get out the ironing board!

What do you wear that needs ironing?

I have hardly anything that needs to be ironed - I pay a lot of attention to fabrics when shopping!

I find everything does. Sweatshirts, jumpers, shirts, dresses, jeans - basically everything.

Why can’t you just hang stuff? Do you have too many clothes ?

NotAnotherScarf · 24/03/2026 15:39

I hang shirts up with 3 buttons done up, use the hook strap things in skirts and other female clothes, trousers are a pain but a thick hanger helps prevent creases. I ensure everything is spaced out as much as possible.
Jumpers, tee shirts and other tops get neatly folded as they are in shops.

I am completely anal about my clothes. I always use spray starch for shirts

Dressses · 24/03/2026 15:43

Travel steamer, use just before wearing.

NoSoupForU · 24/03/2026 15:46

I have a laundry room so the ironing board is permanently up in there. I just iron things as I wear them. The thought of standing doing piles of ironing of things I might not even wear for ages sounds like hell!

Chocolateismylovelife · 24/03/2026 15:47

I iron most things, I tried the only iron when you need something but I find the creases too stubborn if left too long after drying.

Quine0nline · 24/03/2026 15:51

Iron, then fold to A4 size.

Nine years in the wrens. Overalls and Burberry coats were a problem, but for chief wrens kit muster and the premise of shore leave, the Dauntless girls did it!

Hedgesgalore · 24/03/2026 16:01

Two large floor to ceiling wardrobes. I have tubs on my wardrobe shelves for clothes that I've folded jeans/cords, pjs summer tub, pjs winter tub, scarves, knickers, socks, bras, thermals. I've no chest of drawers.

Everything else is on hangers in my wardrobes. I buy the flocked hangers, they're thinner so take up less space.

One wardrobe of hanging is all my blues/navy, the other wardrobe has all my colours in order from light to dark. Makes finding stuff so much easier, I was making everything untidy looking for my blue stuff so put them all together in their own wardrobe hanging space.

I iron (with a Fastpress) most of my stuff including bedding and tea towels (they fold neater in their drawer) I do not iron jeans.

I'm struggling to imagine how something can get creased while hung up. Are they squashed between other hung up things?

canklesmctacotits · 24/03/2026 16:05

They’ll come out crumpled if you don’t have enough storage space. Your clothes need to breathe, for this reason and also to air and not get moth eaten.

It’s a bit odd that you’re ironing sweatshirts though. Do you have a tumble dryer? If not perhaps your washing machine doesn’t have a high enough spin cycle, or maybe you’re putting too many clothes in there in one go? Your sweatshirts really shouldn’t need ironing.

I have a steamer but I don't find it much faster

I've tried this and there are still creases. Maybe I'm just not good at folding.

I have a tumble dryer but I don't dry any oft actual clothes in them.

Just fold after drying then the night before you want to wear them hang and spray with lenor crease release. I’ve not ironed for years after discovering this!

Mousekatoolsattheready · 24/03/2026 18:39

I’m an ironer of most things too. I find hanging best as long as the rail isn’t crammed full. Things need to sit properly on a hanger - could it be your hangers?

If folding I make sure it’s “smooth” once I’ve folded it. I’m careful where I fold eg not the middle of a top. Again, do the folded items have enough space in the drawers? Are there heavy jeans on top of lighter tops?
Sorry if that seems patronising 😂

Mousekatoolsattheready · 24/03/2026 18:39

I couldn’t be arsed to iron every day, I do it all on a Sunday while I watch something good on Netflix.

I very rarely use ironing board. My mum is a seamstress and she always ironed on a folded blanket on her sewing table. I use blanket on my dining table for 90% of ironing.

KimberleyClark · 25/03/2026 08:45

I don’t iron much, but when I do I leave it hanging up overnight before putting away or wearing.

Pureclass · 25/03/2026 08:56

I dont have loads of storage space and I do like most things ironed.

Let the clothes completely cool before folding or putting away. I hang from doorframe or let them all "rest" on the back of the sofa.

Fold clothes with tissue paper - i bought a bulk lot from amazon.

I did this before a cruise and few years ago and none of our clothes were creased, then even what we didnt wear then came on a caravan holiday (somewhat optimistic).

Some weren't worn then, still had tissue paper in and when I finally came to wear them they were still crease free.

I am still reusing the original paper. Just cut to size or it will give extra creasing.
I also resold into tissue if the item is still clean. Im not a MNetter who does laundry for laundrys sake.

I only really do this for my things (except holidays) as DH and DS don't care😆

I never iron anything before putting it away, Ive never understood how people think thats a good method.

Iron it before you're going to wear it.

most Wrinkles in most clothes sort themselves out with a bit of body heat. I certainly never iron jeans and jumpers.

The only items I have that really need an iron before I wear them are linen, hence I hardly ever wear them.
