to expect not to be called a stupid bitch at a zebra crossing

I crossed in front of a car who stopped for me at a zebra crossing. He rolled down his window and shouted "blah blah blah you stupid bitch blah blah" (I missed the blah blah blah bits). So was wondering what I possibly could have done wrong if anything. It was otherwise just a normal zebra crossing crossing. Are there any times where pedestrians don't have the right of way on those?

It is still a zebra crossing , zebra crosing do usually have beacons .

I do recall in the depth of my memeory that if it has beacons and they are covered up then it is techically not a crsossing anymore .

No need for abuse, a beep would be far less offensive. He could've been distracted, but that's no excuse.

An idiot jumped the lights in front of me yesterday. It's a T junction where only one lane of cars can go at once due to the road narrowing & you can't see either left or right until you are in the road. My light was green so started creeping out & an idiot came speeding round from the left. His light was definitely RED. GRRRRRRRR. Luckily I was able to stop & even had time to beep, but it was scary.

My sister was at a set of lights waiting to cross, next to her was a woman with a buggy, lights change green man comes up, woman sterts to push buggy in to road when prat on mobile phone drives stright through the light my sister yelled at him... call him a wk and one of those stupid plastic policemen that was near by told her off for swearing, so she told him to get a real job and that he should be more worried about the wk who went through a red light on a mobile then a cuss word.

Disagree with BacktoBasics, and bugger what the Highway Code says .

If you actually wait on the pavement for cars to stop quite a few will arrogantly drive on by with a sod you kind of attitude.

I am not advocating just walking straight across - but what I do is take one step onto the crossing so I am right by the kerb but technically in the road (however I am able to jump back easily if some moron fails to see me because they have forgotten that good driving requires constant concentration). That signals your intention to cross much more explicitly and deters the less courteous drivers from simply ignoring you

My 73yo mother was splashed by a idiot driver, who laughed at her - to his regret, she kicked a massive dent in his car door My mum might look like a nice little old lady, but don't be messing with her!

handlemecarefully · 18/06/2008 20:59

Good for her! I don't normally endorse criminal damage but you've got to admire a plucky 73 year old

JJ · 18/06/2008 21:58

Hilarious about your mum, lucyellensmum - I agree with hmc, don't normally condone such things but....

What are "wide boys", Cam?

I'm so glad I posted this and perhaps that he yelled at me. I had nearly forgotten to pay the congestion charge for yesterday and mulling this over reminded me of it! So worth the experience because it saved me £50.

Oh, JJ, in our neighbourhood, the zebra crossings really suck - there's one near me that I often see pedestrians stranded at, particularly old ones.

I suspect he did indeed see you but was not intending to stop - I'm afraid I never step out onto the crossing until I can see the driver is slowing down, because they so often just don't bother. It's all rather and .

MsSparkle · 19/06/2008 10:20

I personally hate zebra crossings. If i had things my way, i would scrap them and put in pelican crossings. That way everybody knows where they stand.

You do get wanker drivers who think they don't have to stop at pelican and zebra crossings BUT you do also get wanker padestrians who think they don't have to wait for the green man.

We have a pelican crossing near dp's shop which is busy because it's right next to a college. Quite often people just wander across when the red man is up, sometimes without even pressing the button and they just egnore drivers who get angry at them for doing this. So i guess it's a two way street, you get assholes on both sides.

One of my pet hates is when people try and cross busy roads when there is a crossing right near them but they are too lazy to walk to it and cross

Cammelia · 20/06/2008 16:02

Just trying to think of the American equivalent of wide boys,JJ

DH says "small-time gangsters"

DaDaDa · 20/06/2008 16:12

YANBU.

Some pedestrians do just step out without making eye contact though. As a cyclist (and pedestrian and driver of course) it's infuriating if someone walking with their back to you just suddenly turns out onto the crossing - I think pedestrians do need to signal their intent to cross. [and no I don't jump red lights/ride on the pavement/not stop at zebra crossings before anyone starts about cyclists ]

Oh and pedestrians on mobiles or with ipods are a bloody menace.
