Seems insane, but what choice did they have, could have been a free for all if they ignored it

Yanbu = demolish

Of course. They did not have planning permission.

this shouldn’t need extra information but they DO own the land so the land owners suggestion that they give it to charity is manipulative.

Ginasonabendernow · 20/03/2026 19:12

Should have been used as an IPAS centre instead of building more

Papercompany · 20/03/2026 19:16

The owners are breathtakingly arrogant. They were refused permission to build a 3000 sq ft house and so went ahead and built a 6000 sq ft house. The owners say the taxpayers are paying for it to be demolished but this whole charade by these owners has cost the taxpayers an absolute fortune.

There are clear rules for a reason. If everyone just built what they want it would be crazy.

The owners should be ashamed of themselves but suspect they couldn't care less about anyone but themselves.

Livingthebestlife · 20/03/2026 19:19

It was such a beautiful house and whatever has gone on it's a crying shame it was knocked down. There's plenty of illegal builds here. I personally think it could have been used a respite house to help the young and disabled as there's not many and the wait list is years for what we have, my own DD is coming up to 8 years waiting. Anyway, they spouted some shite about sewers systems etc but let's look at the facts, a family was raised there, they all live there for over 20 years, it was obviously fine to live in, surely something could have been done to sort the land out.

Onefortheroad25 · 20/03/2026 19:36

I live nearby and think it’s a real shame it had to come to this. But the house was no good for anything without planning. If planning could be got then none of this would have happened. No point people saying it should have been turned into homeless accommodation or a respite etc as it would need pp too. I don’t know the couple but the wife came across quite arrogant and entitled on the radio yesterday. Afaik they are still in hiding as an arrest warrant is out for them. The kids were there to deal with all of this which is awful. On the other hand I do feel bad for them as watching your family home being torn to the ground would be heartbreaking.

Random321 · 20/03/2026 19:36

I don't think it should have been demolished but I don't think the owners should have been allowed keep it either.

Should have used to house those in need.

If everyone ignore planning permission decisions, where would we be?

ColdAsAWitches · 20/03/2026 19:42

Of course it should. I have no sympathy for the owners. They knew what they were doing when it was built

I agree.

And with a previous poster... breathtakingly arrogant to build it in the first place

I agree@ColdAsAWitches
They ploughed on regardless forgetting that sometimes (rarely though) in Ireland actions have consequences.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 20/03/2026 20:09

The owners own the land so no it couldn't vw given to families or used as an ipas centre

Pureclass · 20/03/2026 20:16

Im sure its going to be the first of many

Through the boom years loads of houses were being built with no planning permission. You used to see fields blocked high with hay bales or similar and then suddenly there was a mcmansion appeared from nowhere.

The sewage systems etc coping are part of the reasons the planning was never given. But the rule against being able to build on your own land came in quite quickly - so the richer country ones thought it didnt really apply to them, sure hadnt they been handing off parcels of land for years....and the government here are slow.

But this is just the start I think

AnSpideog · 20/03/2026 20:24

I just think that it’s awful that it was allowed to be dragged out for 20 years. But yes, they built a house that they hadn’t even applied for planning for

deeahgwitch · 21/03/2026 08:14

I think they die apply for planning permission @AnSpideogbutvwere refused.
They then decided to build it anyway and increase it in size 😮
What a waste of what is, I’m sure, a gorgeous hime.

randomchap · 21/03/2026 08:21

Good

They obviously considered themselves above the law. Such arrogance
