Unseasoned food

I've eaten at a few other people's houses in the last couple of months, and I've really noticed the absence of seasoning, and no salt or pepper mills on the table.

I grew up in the 80's, where salt was added in cooking to everything, so obviously it's great for health that we're no longer adding salt to vegetable water etc.

I don't generally add salt to cooking, but I always put salt and pepper mills on the table, and would generally add some to my plate.

I've recently been served meals such as grilled salmon, boiled baby potatoes, steamed veg, with no seasoning, no herbs, not even butter or EVOO on the potatoes. Or a roast dinner, no seasoning added in cooking at all, not even on the potatoes. No salt and pepper mills on the table. Honestly to me, these meals taste super bland.

Now, I'm an old fogie, and the people hosting me have been various ages, but all younger than me. Is this just how it is now? People's palates have changed?

So, AIBU to say that whilst not adding excessive salt in cooking is a great thing for health, it's normal/polite to have salt and pepper mills on the table?

IANBU - bring on the salt and pepper
IABU - times have changed. Cruet sets have no place in the modern world!

Hmm, I never add seasoning to my food either during cooking or at the table. Never really thought about it but now I'm thinking, no wonder my mum always asks for the salt when she comes for tea!

Thanks for explaining something so obvious. All the things you listed taste hot and unpleasant to me regardless of whether you believe that. Call it what you want but “Aromatic” means “inedible” for me. I’m not sure quite why you want to get into semantics but it’s all shite to me.

Salt and vinegar are great but that’s as far as it goes.

Oh dear. I seem to have struck a nerve.

Not even close - it does amuse me when I come across people who think they know best 🤣

Sounds like hell to me. A waste of potential 🤣🤣.

I honestly think I couldn't eat unseasoned food, I just wouldn't enjoy it and don't see the point.

Just be an adult and say you dislike something instead of describing something as inedible and tasting like shite.

I dislike parsnips, but I'm not childish about it.

Okay as you are determined to pursue this and assume I don’t know my own experience, I will clarify.

There are many foods I dislike in general - they are just unpleasant.

However any food with any spices in is inedible TO ME as it causes actual pain in mouth and makes me sick.

There is a difference, do you see? I’m not saying it’s not inedible to anyone else. I’m AuDHD so I don’t always have the same sensory experience as others.

And you have been picking at my language throughout the thread even though I am perfectly capable of saying what I mean (even if you disagree). I find that slightly odd behaviour but, being a grown up, I get that not everyone behaves or feels the same way 😀

Figgygal · 21/03/2026 14:36

I'm 45
My parents used a lot of salt my dad still does
I don't even have it in the house never use it or pepper

CoastalCalm · 21/03/2026 14:52

I’d just ask for some salt and pepper but usually have a pinch pot of Maldon in my bag anyway as I’m on a high salt diet so add it to all sorts of things

I thought of this thread this morning because I cook up semolina from time to time, with full fat milk, cinnamon and nutmeg. I would be really really surprised if someone tasted that and said it was 'hot' or inedible. The nutmeg brings out the creaminess of the milk.

It's odd what some people consider hot. I had a friend at uni who only used to buy Tesco value beans because she said heinz beans were too spicy!

Bluedenimdoglover · 21/03/2026 15:17

Really, you are asking this? Just do what you want on your own table and ask for salt and pepper if you are dining somewhere it's not on the table. Is this really important with what's happening in the world at the moment)

This will blow your mind - people experience tastes differently from other people. What I find odd is those people who insist that couldn’t possibly be the case because they can’t understand it.

Seriously! Enjoy the company, and thank your lucky stars you are invited out!!

We don't add salt whilst cooking, but we do have salt and pepper mills on standby on table.

I'm in my mid-fifties and used to put salt in and on everything.

Since I stopped about 10 years ago, I'm shocked at how salty so many dishes taste. I guess my taste buds have adjusted?

Having said that, I always put salt and pepper on the table for guests as we all have different tastes.

I've cooked without salt since I had my children and the palette does adjust
