How much heavier are you in winter compared to your summer weight?

I am your textbook yoyo dieter. Always have been. But I took my health quite seriously the last two years and have been able to not pack on the pounds after dieting. No Ozempic. Just introducing the gym and reducing carbs. To be honest I couldn’t be arsed to lose the sale 10 pounds AGAIN.

Im 8 pounds heavier than my ideal weight (I was this Summer). Is this normal? I have lost all sense of what is normal when it comes to weight. I definitely have been sat at home more and not
moving my body. Christmas and a holiday abroad have not helped.

I put on about 500 pounds in winter. I should mention that I am a brown bear living in Canada so this may not be representative of everyone.

I think constantly weighing yourself regularly year on year to be able to draw seasonal conclusions down to the pound is abnormal.
I don’t weigh myself but the fluctuation won’t be noticeable as I’m short and wear structured fitted clothes, as in high rise jeans with no elastane rather than leggings so weight gain/ change in size would be physically noticeable.

I lost over 2 stone last year counting calories. I stopped losing weight in October last year, and I've put a stone back on since Christmas. I can't seem to break out of the food cycle I'm in. It gets me down. I mess up every day

It’s it’s own kind of hell. You really have my sympathies. Have gained the weight back so many times in my life.

Typical yoyo dieter here. Every now and then I give myself a kick up the bum, knuckle down and lose a few pounds, then life happens and it all goes on again. I lost almost a stone last year but suffice to say most of it has gone back on. I do weigh myself every morning (please don’t judge) and log my weight daily. Your weight does fluctuate naturally anyway.

😂Immediately below your post the algorithm decided to show me an advert for Yosemite national park in the USA, with a brown bear as its logo!

I usually am half to a stone heavier in winter! Every autumn I say I’ll try not to let it creep back on but it always does. I do usually - but not always - lose it though. I do IF and low carb. Winter is just so much more carby.

BadSkiingMum · 17/03/2026 09:42

I do agree with the OP that it seems much easier to lose weight in the summer:

Lighter food and more salad
If there is a heatwave then you just want to eat less
Out and about more, so more movement and less snacking
If you go on holiday you may not have access to a kitchen.
We tend to skip lunch on holidays so I find that I actually lose weight while I am away!

Roll on summer, quite literally! 😁

My weight goes on a plateau, which is good. I have been on a weight loss journey with Mounjaro but winter makes us maintain or even gain a little because we're less active, not drinking as much (cooler weather) and we're eating more stodgy food.

LetterBetter · 17/03/2026 09:51

4kg!

So annoyed at myself..

minipie · 17/03/2026 10:00

I’m definitely a little heavier in the winter, I call it my winter layer. Maybe 3-4 lb though, not a lot.

Sonolanona · 17/03/2026 11:58

Just a little over Xmas when there is too much wine and cheese, but it generally drops off again afterwards..maybe a kg or two?
I just notice if my jeans are tighter and cut out the crisps (my big weakness) but I'm also fairly active..walk the dog, play squash, so that tends to keep me in check!

SendTheNextOneIn · 17/03/2026 12:05

I’m heavy all year round. Same way I don’t have a ‘summer’ vs a ‘winter’ wardrobe. I just wear the same clothes either with a cardigan and tights or without.

oneofakindmultipack · 17/03/2026 12:20

I never used to weigh myself, but after some health issues I've started monitoring it and now weigh myself most mornings. I don't think it's abnormal to do that, even if not everyone does it. It's only a problem if you obsess about it or have unrealistic expectations.

OP, it's common knowledge that people tend to gain over the winter for all the reasons already mentioned. It's simply easier to put on weight during the seasons when you're (probably) moving less and eating more (or more carb-heavy foods). Don't be too hard on yourself. Just try to get back into the healthier habits again and accept that it's part of life to fluctuate a bit.

blubberball · 17/03/2026 12:55

I do weigh myself most days. It's depressing watching it creep up every day. I can't seem to snap myself out of it at the moment

Flamingojune · 17/03/2026 13:08

No idea i never weigh myself. Just the same i guess

HangingOutAtTheRialto · 17/03/2026 13:11

I'm the same all year round, my habits don't change much with the seasons.
