AIBU to challenge someone using video call in communal changing rooms?

AiBU to speak to a woman in the changing room who was having a video call at the mirror whilst doing her hair? No one was behind her at that point but it is an open communal changing room with showers and women walk around in and out of the shower with/without towels.

She looked really surprised to be spoken to. I just said “I don’t think you should have your camera on in the changing rooms” She said no one was behind her so couldn’t see the issue.

Disappointingly wishy-washy response from the receptionist when I told them on my way out. Well, we can’t really do much about it. Do you want me to get the manager? We don’t know who it is. I’m not sure if it’s against the rules, lots of people break the rules. She seemed to think I was making a big fuss. David Lloyd.

She probably just didn't want to have to do anything about it.

I'd complain about the whole thing, including/especially the gym's response.

If someone appears naked in the background, and the person on the call shares their naked image - even accidentally - that sounds pretty chuffing illegal to me.

I suspect David L policy, like most gyms, is no phones in the changing areas.

This is the U.S., but it immediately brought this story to mind (though appreciate the circumstances were a little different): https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-37882973

That's interesting. She said she wasn't thinking about what she was doing.

"Police charged Mathers with misdemeanor invasion of privacy, and last week she was sentenced to 45 days in jail or 30 days of community service removing graffiti.

Mathers told ABC News she chose community service, which will start this week.

"I'm accepting of it," she said. "I think that the option between 45 — I think it was 45 — days in jail or cleaning up graffiti was two strange options, but I'm excited to clean up our streets. This is just one more step into learning from my mistake, and I do start this week."

As part of her plea, she will be on probation for three years and may not snap photos of people or post them online without their permission."

I agree about complaining. They need to have effective policies to safeguard their customers - and to be effective it means staff have to act when something is reported to them.

This! A silly woman did this at Center Oarcs, she face timed her boyfriend whilst surrounded by women getting changed after the spa! I was so shocked at her idiocy! I told her that wasn't appropriate, and complained on my way out. The woman on reception was clueless, didn't seem to grasp why this was a problem 🤦🏻‍♀️

RampantIvy · 16/03/2026 23:40

At Thermae Bath Spa you have to put your phone in a secure wallet that gets sealed at reception. You put it in your locker with your belongings but you can't access it until you leave when they then unlock the wallet for you.

Yeah, that’s appalling behaviour on her part and you were absolutely right to say something. Nobody should be waving bloody cameras around in a changing room.

I had this in a changing room with a teenage girl. I thought she was actually filming me and challenged her - but probably not very well as it felt so awkward and then she was hugely defensive. I just think this generation are so used to facetime type stuff they have zero boundaries around it!
