Feeling worried about this. Is this a mouse or a rat? No food been left out but we live in the countryside.

Rat. Long fat tail and big feet.

SunshineAndSandalsMakeMeHappy · 16/03/2026 09:14

That’s a rat.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/03/2026 09:18

Rat.

stickydough · 16/03/2026 09:20

Jeezo that’s graphic, I think you need to make clear that your photo is of a badly injured animal.

CinnamonBuns67 · 16/03/2026 09:21

Rat. Wouldn't worry though, they truly are everywhere.

SilenceInside · 16/03/2026 09:21

It's most definitely a rat.

NaiceCupOTea · 16/03/2026 09:22

Mouse. The fur is too silky for a rat, also the tail to feet ratio is too short for a rat. Also the tail is thinner all the way down, rats tails are thicker at the base then taper. Also rats are rather large creatures, this is on the smaller side.

When you say you are worried Op, what are you worried about? I presume a cat or some prey animal has caught this and left half on the driveway? Fairly common if you live in the country side. It's not in the house at least!

Barney16 · 16/03/2026 09:22

Rat because it has massive feet.

Y1006 · 16/03/2026 09:26

Oh god @NaiceCupOTea i hope you are right!!

I am worried as I can hear noise in the roof though haven’t seen any others. Have a tiny baby so particularly anxious

I also don’t know how it was injured

zurigo · 16/03/2026 09:28

How big is it? There is no scale in this photo. My cat does that to mice, but she's never done it to a rat - much too big to just bite the head off (sorry - I know that's horrible!)

Beamur · 16/03/2026 09:29

Look at the tail. If it's banded it's a rat.
If you're hearing noises in the roof there might be more rats.

ArtAngel · 16/03/2026 09:31

Young rat

rfgtc43c4 · 16/03/2026 09:31

Furry tail (mouse) or hairless tail (rat)? hard to tell from picture? Looks small, so mouse?
Put poison down outside, that seemed to have gotten rid of my ceiling rodents.

But at least you know something is doing its job! cat? fox?

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 16/03/2026 09:31

Yes, sorry to you OP, but you really need to warn what is in that photo. That is not okay.

Catcatcatcatcat · 16/03/2026 09:33

That’s a rat.

Really? there was already a sensitive blur on it. And you see these walking around the garden, should they have trigger warnings too?

@TheBeaTgoeson1 sorry, how do I do that

AllTheChaos · 16/03/2026 09:45

Please don’t put poison down! Whatever is doing a good job of keeping the rodent population down will then be poisoned when it eats them.

Isobel201 · 16/03/2026 09:47

Rats don't go after babies, just put poison down and make sure there is no waste left out.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/03/2026 09:49

That's a young rat.
The photo is fine - it is what it is - but then I have cats.
@Y1006 if you can hear scampering/scratching in your roof, call Rentokil.

Y1006 · 16/03/2026 09:55

tail definitely furry

It's an ex rat. Rats and mice are everywhere, rural or city or town. The noises in your attic are just as likely to be birds or squirrels.

Happyjoe · 16/03/2026 10:04

No need to be worried, they are living their life and it's outside. Just don't want them indoors or to be able to get underneath the house or the loft then die - that smell is something else. Check the edges of your house outside to make sure and block any routes in!!

Edited, another - no poison. Please. Birds, hedgehogs and natural hunters of rats will die. You're in the countryside, totally unacceptable and pointless as other rats will just come along.
