More narcissistic social media bollocks...

I used to love looking at photos of my mum in the 1960s when she was in her 20s, she had an enormous 'beehive' - there's one of her in a line of friends at the seaside, all with identical beehives.

I don't have any children to be interested in what I looked like in the 90s, if I did they'd be disappointed, I still wear some of my 1990s clothes today and I've got the same hairstyle albeit it's dyed now and about 1/3 as thick as it was back then 😥.

DollopOfFun · 16/03/2026 09:10

Mine don't need to ask, I tell them all the time 😂

I think this is driving the trend 😄

theprincessthepea · 16/03/2026 09:58

Umm my teen has asked if this is how we dressed in the 90s because Y2K is in and they are all into low rise and slogan Ts. Plus I’ve noticed a surge in young people watching shows we grew up with like Vampire Diaries and Gilmore Girls.

But I think it comes out of curiosity (at least on my side).

The same way I was fascinated when I saw my mum in her 20s in the 80s. If I was closer to her, I’m sure I’d ask.

NerrSnerr · 16/03/2026 09:59

It’s just a social media trend. In a couple of weeks something else will take over. That’s just how it works. Just scroll past when you see it’s not something you want to watch. If you engage it boosts the numbers, makes it popular so it makes other people do it.

It’s really not deep at all- they know that we know they their children didn’t actually ask. I was a teen in the 90s so have enjoyed the ones from celebs who were huge in the 90s.

They probably won't have given it a thought.

Then they start to tell you about this really cool old band that they've discovered.

You won't have heard of them, they're called Nirvana. Grin

😂

I love seeing young 'uns in t-shirts such as Nirvana, the Ramones etc. - so much music of the 2020s seems anodyne, it's really good they're discovering the music of the 20th century.

SockPlant · 16/03/2026 10:00

growing up? my DC asked me that quite a bit, but about the 80s rather than the 90s and mostly because of music.

They dressed as me in the 80s at a rock festival once for someone's party that had an 80s theme and was a kind of pretend mini 80s festival in someones paddock. We even found some original festival t-shirts from back then.

Moveoverdarlin · 16/03/2026 10:02

Exactly. I’ve just watched Liz Hurley’s. I don’t follow her but it’s just appeared on my Instagram feed.

She’s crammed in pretty much every tabloid picture ever taken of her from 1990-1999.

EasternStandard · 16/03/2026 10:06

I’ve had a few celebs I don’t follow appear, eg Clueless actress and other 90s ones. Bit annoying but luckily no influencers etc as I don’t follow any.

kellygoeswest · 16/03/2026 10:09

I like seeing photos of my mum from the 80s/90s, her style was really fun and she had a great perm... I love when she shows me her old photo albums, but I wouldn't share photos of her on social media (she doesn't use it so wouldn't post them herself either).

Hotcrossed · 16/03/2026 10:09

i agree, the 80s were far more interesting than the 90s, fashion wise, but mine were all born in the 90s

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/03/2026 10:10

Ha! I actually posted about this yesterday on my own FB. Saw a reel by a Gen X woman in the US explaining her cynical discomfort with it, which I share.

I think part of my issue with it comes from attending multiple recent funierals with the inevitable photo montage of "happy memories" to a "meaningful song" which makes me feel sad as it reminds me of premature obituaries. But that's possibly just me... I suppose it's also tied up with the idea of the context of memories, and how snapshots of life have context and can be somewhat illusory. Card carrying over thinker obviously 😆

Ohyeahitsme · 16/03/2026 10:18

My kids asked to see pictures of me and DH when we were little.

Prancingpickle · 16/03/2026 10:56

My kids have asked me what I looked like in the 80's 90's and 00's. So no I don't think it is narcissistic social media bollox, I think it is something that kids do.

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 16/03/2026 11:20

I have an adult daughter and a teen son and they love looking at pictures of me and their dad in our teens. None of us look amazing in every picture but it’s still nice for them to see what you looked like before they existed. I also love seeing pictures of my parents in their young days. I haven’t posted it but I think it’s quite a sweet trend.

Unicornsandrainbow · 16/03/2026 11:55

My daughter has been telling me all about this brilliant music that I won't have heard of, it's a coll new band called the Beatles lol

TB23 · 16/03/2026 11:57

No idea about recent trends, but yes, my kids have looked through photo albums and have asked to see pictures when I was young a few times. Normal curiosity, I was the same.

SockPlant · 16/03/2026 11:59

I do agree that some of the social media posts are a bit of a "oh i was so cool back then" daft vibe.

Triskellion75 · 16/03/2026 13:02

Just a harmless social media surely?

pouletvous · 16/03/2026 14:34

🤣

no! They havent 🤣

She looks exactly the same now. Barely changed at all

surely it’s only fun to see the spiral perm, grungy fashion and poor fashion choices

longtompot · 16/03/2026 15:07

Goethesdog · 16/03/2026 09:09

The Stacey Solomon one was really good

It's the only one I've liked tbh 😆

ThePoshUns · 16/03/2026 15:17

lol I just saw Stacey’s. Fair play to her, that was funny.

DundeeNewcastle · 16/03/2026 16:24

Terrible trend, but almost worth it for Stacey's!

Teakettletrio · 16/03/2026 18:37

Just like the ‘post a picture from 2016’ it’s all being used to train AI to map how humans age over ten, twenty, thirty years etc. Doesn't really matter for celebs as their images are already available. And it gives them a theme for a new bit of engagement posting. But when a non celebrity copies the style of the post, then there is new data to use, probably with non digital images that have been digitised for the first time.

Plumnora · 17/03/2026 15:00

My kids aren't remotely interested in what I looked like in the 90s, or indeed in any other decade to be fair, because like all young people, they forget people and the world existed before they did!
I've been quite enjoying watching the reels though and it's nice to remember being young and carefree....
