To ask, what are your pets’ most annoying habits?

We all love our pets, of course. But what do they do that bugs you?

Dog (male, nearly 11 years old): licks my dressing gown and pillowcase. So I took off my dressing gown earlier and laid it on the sofa. By the time I came back, he had licked it all around the collar and hood. Whenever I make my bed, I have to pull the quilt over the pillowcases, otherwise they’d be licked and sodden. So he basically likes to lick where my body has been! Adore him to pieces, but it’s annoying and gross.

Cat (1 1/2 year old rescue, have had her for 6 months): this habit really gets my goat! She will miaow at the back door. Obvious answer is to let her out, right? So I’ll do that but she’s not remotely interested in going out and will move away from the back door as I approach it. When she goes outside, she miaows to be let back in one minute later (no exaggeration). It’s Scotland, so unfortunately too cold just to leave the door open for her to come and go.
I love her and she’s incredibly sweet, but I will never understand cats.

Obsessive chewing of paw if even slightly allergic and he's allergic to many
things! Bless him, it's not his fault, but why lick? His brother just scratches so we know to check food now that we've worked out they're allergic to stuff.

Horse likes to scream when he sees me. Slightly embarrassing but he loves me!

We have a JRT, I don't think there is anything they do that Isn't annoying!

elliejjtiny · 16/03/2026 13:06

Dcat sits on top of the cat food box and howls at me if he wants to be fed. If I try and remove him he swipes my hand with his paw. I can't get the cat food out of the box if he's sat on it. Not sure why I bother with cat food anyway, he usually prefers the contents of the food waste bin. Which he knocks over multiple times a day.

I love him really, even when BIL comes round and Dcat shows more affection to him than he does to me. Here's a photo of him snuggled up with his brother.

And the cat used to like to steal stuff to give us a s 'gifts'-so once, we had a whole roast chicken, no idea where he got it from, another time a packet of bacon. Not much use once he'd dragged it through who knows how many gardens!

The fur! Also the determination to vomit on the rug, not the washable floor.

My darling old boy (cocker spaniel) is 12 nearly 13. He was very unwell last year and I didn't think he was going to make it - so every day is very special with him now. But the little bastard pulled me clean off my feet last week - chasing a seagull on the beach. I cracked my chin on a pebble and have a lovely bruise to show for it Hmm he's also ran straight into the back of my knees and felled me, and pulled me over a stile so I landed arse up in a hedge. Those moments are when I have to remind myself how much I luffs him... and his retractable lead is now in the bin.

Mine threw up ON ME. And the duvet. And the bottom sheet Envy

We came home from holiday last night at 8pm with an asleep toddler.

At least until the cat sang his full-throated Song of Welcome for an entire hour because he was happy to see us.

Gotback · 16/03/2026 13:50

Cat used to use the catflap in the old house as a mere door knocker. Uses the catflap in the new house, huzzah! But one way only. Refuses to use it to come in, it's an exit only one apparently.

My long term foster dog, who I foster for a local charity, has many quirks and idiosyncrasies. One of the most annoying ones is that he won't eat breakfast or dinner unless I ask him if he wants to go out first. This has now progressed to me having to stand by the back door, with my coat and shoes on, before he will eat.

Big Dog is a thief. Most of what he steals ends up in his bed, but if he gets the chance, he will bury his hoard in the garden. He steals everything, clothes that smell like me, empty food cartons or boxes, kitchen utensils and cutlery, anything and everything that smells like something he likes, which is 100% of the things. He can also open drawers, cupboards, bins, and doors, and reach high shelves and coat hooks. There is no stopping his theivery. He is smart too. If I am in the sitting room and he's trying to steal a frying pan off the oven, he will very gently and quietly lift it and place it on the floor before he decides where to hide it to be buried later.

Little dog also steals, but he only steals food, and he cannot ever open it. He sleeps in my bed and I often packets of biscuits or crisps he has taken from DD's drawer, hidden in my bed unopened. He teams up with the cat to knock things off places he cannot reach.

Snakes! As soon as you clean out their tank and put them back, 90% of the time they imediately take a massive shit in it. Some go the extra mile and do it in their water dish. I've got 11 of them, so it is very much happening with atleast half of them every clean out day.

Sorry but that's made me laugh, I don't have snakes, but my haughty labrador will do a massive shit (outside) and look at me (his servant) and basically go 'pick that up love' 😂🐕💩

Frequency · 16/03/2026 14:08

Also, Tiny Dog frequently locks herself in the closed cat litter. She can get in, but she cannot get out. She's not smart enough to cry or bark when she's stuck; she simply waits for either the cat to let her out or someone to notice she is missing. It happens several times a day. Her one brain cell is not capable of retaining information.

ThatsPlentyIsa · 16/03/2026 14:08

Corgi (4) has a herding ball that he propels around the garden at terrifying speeds (I fear for any cattle his ancestors were in charge of) while barking with hysterical joy. When the ball gets stuck - in a thorn bush, in a hedge, against a wall, etc - he thinks barking even louder at it will resolve the issue.

it does not.

old hound dog has no flaws, she is perfect.

I have two cats, and I think most of their annoying habits (food disdain, persistent meowing and so on) have already been covered. There’s a cat flap in my back door which they both freely use, yet when I open the door the younger cat will invariably hurl herself out of it as if I’ve been keeping her prisoner for months. She’ll then sniff the air for a minute or so, find it not to her liking, and stalk back indoors with an air of grave disappointment.
She’s very sweet but a bit lacking in brainpower.

Additup · 16/03/2026 14:21

Our cat: Mmmm, this food is so lovely I'm going to chomp it down super fast.
3 minutes later: cat vomits the eaten too quickly food back up onto a rug, rather than the hard floor.
Our cat: I'm hungry, please can I have more food.

Emmz1510 · 16/03/2026 14:51

Don’t have a pet anymore but our childhood cat would knead you with his paws while purring and sucking on your clothing. My sisters thought it was cute and would let him crack on but it freaked me out, I thought it was creepy. Making biscuits I think it’s called.

SoSoLong · 16/03/2026 14:56

My cat miaows at every closed door. Even wardrobe doors, they've got to be left open for him. He also wakes me up at 5am or earlier for cuddles and food.

Laiste · 16/03/2026 16:14

One of my rag doll cats is obsessed with chewing crunchy plastic, sweet wrappers ect 🙄

He is especially wild about curling ribbon and it's the one thing he will break house rules which he is well aware of - like no getting up on the dinning room table - to get to. Xmas is a nightmare.

If he gets to the crunchy plastic or ribbon he'll eat it and then yowl at the top of his voice before throwing it all up on the hall rug.

I love him though 😍

Laiste · 16/03/2026 16:16

My fox terrier has several annoying habits, right now she is wedged behind me, having climbed over the whippet, getting squished. The whippet has found a tissue which she was quietly ripping up. Her other trick is when we are ready yo go for a walk, she runs to the top of the stairs and wont come down. She loves a walk, so shes just being a git. The whippet is a clothes licker too. Weirdo.

Afolnerd · 16/03/2026 17:30

We have a tortoise, we all love him very much but he is stubborn and not very bright!
If he is free roaming in the house he will repeatedly bang into doors until you open them for him, at which point he will refuse to go through the doorway and mooch off somewhere else!

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 16/03/2026 17:38

One bright spark of a DCat decided recently to paw at us, and gently sink their claws in, to elicit stroking. The other DCat thought that was a good idea, so now they both do it 24/7!

DCat brother is not satisfied with his drinking fountain. Whenever we have flowers in a vase, he knocks it over to drink the water!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/03/2026 17:49

Our cat is ginger, so typically quite a pest, but I love him very much. His worst habit for all concerned is stealthily getting underfoot, then being stepped on. I know it sounds like victim blaming, but last night he was on the kitchen side one minute (I gave up on that battle a long time ago and have shares in Method now) and then seconds later his paw was under my foot and he was shrieking and hissing - how? The time DP stepped on him as he was casually lying across the hallway will never be forgotten.

My poodle loves a ball. She will have four out to play with but is desperate for the fifth one that she’s just shoved under the sofa I’m sitting on.
