So my hairdresser knows what I do for a living (it’s an office job). Twice now he’s said “remind me what you do again” and later on he’ll mention about how when he left school he made a promise to himself that he would never work an office job and that could just never be him.

I’m just unsure what he wants me to say back? Like it honestly baffles me that for no reason people will slate other people’s choices. Like I don’t say to him “I made a promise to myself I’d never get a job washing strangers hair”

OP you’re not BU.

My job is office based and while it is not the most riveting role on the planet, it is very well paid and has given me great quality of life. Along with financial security and a good work-life balance, with the opportunity to travel. Despite all of this, when I have met people and explained what I do for a living, I’ve received numerous remarks along the lines of “I couldn’t work in an office me, it’s so boring”, and it’s usually from ‘creative’ types who’s job doesn’t award them anywhere near the privileges mine does for me. I’m not criticising them for being on a lower salary, however I take issue with the fact that they deliver their opinion in an almost a condescending way, as if I’m missing out on something in life and they’re oh so much more enlightened and fulfilled. Which would not be further from the truth.

A lot of people take issue with 9-5 jobs, I’ve heard the term “corporate slave” on numerous online platforms.

I don’t believe the term ‘inverted snobbery’ is entirely accurate for this scenario, as office roles come in various levels and salary bands, however it is something along those lines (English is not my first language, maybe someone else can articulate it better) As you say, people would be outraged if you said to a supermarket worker “I made a promise to myself to never stack shelves”
