What did your landlord say?

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 15/03/2026 17:38

This is a specific scenario that needs agreement between you and your landlord.

If you want use of the property partially in a month, you both need to agree to x % of the monthly rent, or more likely that you pay a whole months rent and that allows you access up to the 17th April (if that’s your starting day of each months rent.)

Has the landlord agreed to you leaving on the 24th?

Are you a lodger living with your landlord or a tenant in a property.

If you are a lodger 1 weeks notice might be acceptable- did you have a contract? So you would pay for 1 week on the 17th and move out on the 24th.

If you are a tenant the usual notice would be a month so you would give notice by the 17th, pay your month's rent and move out when you like vacating the place before 17th April.

Hello im a tenant living here with my partner i still have same contract from 10 years ago ive never had a updated one despite rent increasing 2 years ago also the contract doesn't say that its 6 months 12 months or anything just that I give 4 weeks written notice of leaving

He doesn't really act like a true landlord there's no heating here and hes never set foot in the place and isnt forthcoming on repairs so I feel asking him he will simply just say pay the whole lot

I mentioned around 4 months ago that I was going through a property purchase and would probably be leaving in around 3 months and I sent a update last week to say I have a provisional date for 24th March not confirmed yet

Do you know if your deposit is securely and legally held?

LIZS · 15/03/2026 19:04

So assuming in England you are due to pay four weeks notice and that is normally payable from a rent payment date. If you have not yet issued notice in writing you need to do so.

If you don't know what your contract is or the terms of your tenancy it's impossible to guess how much you owe. Just pay what you think is fair if you don't want to ask your landlord.

Have you given written notice a month in advance? Do you have a lease? If you haven’t give written notice then you do have to pay for the period - as you pay monthly that’s the norm. ‘Mention’ that you are buying and ‘giving an update’ is not the same thing as formal notice. If you decide to leave a week into your notice period that’s your decision, you still need to pay. Once you went past the length on the original lease it became periodic. And for you that’s monthly, so that the notice period you need to give .

SleepyHollowed84 · 15/03/2026 20:59

If if you want to leave you have to give 4 weeks notice IN ADVANCE of your next rental payment date.

So you can give notice before 17th March for your tenancy to end on 17th April.

If you give notice after 17th March, your tenancy will end on 17th May.

^THIS! ^. You ‘have not’ given notice!
