To ask if these are bed bug bites

Hello,
My youngest son occasionally, every 6 weeks or so, looks to have some bites on him, maybe 5 or so. They are under clothes most of the time as he wears pyjamas. They have been on his back, thigh etc. We did consider bed bugs and my husband and I thoroughly cleaned his room, put his teddies in the freezer for 48 hours, disinfected the floor. He has wooden floor. The mattress is spotless, no gaps or dark spots. We even took his wooden bed frame apart, and the slats off, looked over with a torch and in the nooks, and nothing. We have even gone in there at night with torch and moved him around to check, nothings again.
He showed me some this morning, he won't get more now for weeks. We havent travelled anywhere recently. We have a dog that has flea treatment. Any ideas?

Don't panic, they are not bed bug bites. You can Google to look at photos to confirm that. This looks like maybe mosquito or midge bites.

Definitely not.

I used ti get bites like this from cat flea bites. I changed my cat to advantage flea treatment as frontline didn’t work. Hoovered mattresses and fumigated house with bug bombs

Bed bug bites come in clusters of 3 bites relatively close together. I suspect fleas or some type of mite! You could try changing your dogs meds as fleas can become immune if a lot of people in the area use the same one - we got fleas before because the fleas had become immune to frontline. There is a tablet version that lasts 3 months and does everything including tics.

If it was me I would change the dogs meds and spray furniture and carpets with Indorex - it’s a residual treatment that kills certain bugs for a month or so after you spray (cant remember exact period). You could also get a mattress encasement for your child's bed that would keep the mattress free from any creepy crawlies - we have ones on our beds as our kid has a reaction to dustmites - I think it was called zippybag.

If that doesn’t work you can get flea/mite traps on amazon and place them a few places around the room. Leave for a week or two and then use a good camera or microscope to get a pic if what it is and ask google images! If you have birds in your attic/guttering or mice it could be a mite thing. Also any mould can have mould mites. Went down the google rabbit hole when we an unidentified rash lol.

Thanks all. He got more last night, so that's almost 2 weeks between. We will change the dog flea treatment but would a dog groom have picked up on them? He went last week and they said there were no signs of them.

Eggs hatching. The dog flea treatment means that when they hatch, they jump on the dog and die rather than laying more eggs. Breaks the cycle. Change the flea treatment. Hoover mattress, divan, pillows, duvet, carpets and spray liberally with indorex. Might need two cans.

Thank you. I will order a couple of cans tonight. Pics of the bites.

My bites looked like this. I didn’t actually get to the bottom of what was causing mine but I was getting the bites in mid winter so it must have been something in the house. The bug bomb seemed to work for us

Shoemadlady · 25/03/2026 22:40

Do you have a hot tub? That looks a bit like hot tub rash.

Wolfiefan · 25/03/2026 23:01

What flea treatment do you use?

Changesarecoming · 26/03/2026 20:12

We use moxiclear and in the summer a flea and tic collar.
No hot tub.
What bomb do you recommend? Or is a spay better?

Not bed bugs. Probably flea bites.

Wolfiefan · 27/03/2026 07:21

Indorex spray for the house. Haven’t heard of the spot on you use. And don’t know which collars. But worth chatting to the vet.

Changesarecoming · 28/03/2026 16:43

Thank you. We bought indorex today so will give that a whirl tomorrow.

So, slightly update, still a few bites but nothing major but my other ds has some too. They look the same bites and the general consensus was not bed bugs. This morning we stripped the beds as usual and gave them a hoover and we discovered this critter on the bannister. We don't think it's a bed bug as it has 4 legs and slipped from the bannister and hung and moved up and down on what we looked like a web/thread.
What do you all think?
