Not really AIBU but posting for traffic whilst the kettle boils…

just found the last two crumpets at the back of the fridge (not sure why they are in there). BB date of 3rd March. They smell ok, they’re a tiny bit stiff but I’m going to toast them anyway…

they’re fine to eat yeah?

I really wouldn’t.

Sahara123 · 14/03/2026 09:17

I would, definitely!

PeppyBrickQuoter · 14/03/2026 09:18

They’ll be fine. Just make sure you have them today. If not chuck them

PembeGreyfurt · 14/03/2026 09:18

I would eat them.

allmycagesweremental · 14/03/2026 09:18

I was going to have toast but now I’ve found them I really want them!

Smell them again once toasted and take a bite, if they smell or taste mouldy then bin. They may well be fine but you’ll know if not.

I never keep crumpets in the fridge so yours have probably lasted a bit longer than the bb date if yours were in there

FartyAnimal · 14/03/2026 09:19

I would. I never even check useby on bread products. If they look good - get stuck in.

Pinkissmart · 14/03/2026 09:19

I would- as long as there’s no mould

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 14/03/2026 09:20

They’ll last longer in the fridge. But be careful that there’s no mould growing inside the holes first. I’ve made that mistake before. Envy

Myfridgeiscool · 14/03/2026 09:20

Cut it in half to see if there’s any mould hiding in the bubbles bit (if you see what I mean)…if not, eat it

TittyGajillions · 14/03/2026 09:21

Nope, in the bin they go.

Myfridgeiscool · 14/03/2026 09:22

@AnnoyedByAlfieBear …a fellow crumpet mould detective…

SoftLass · 14/03/2026 09:23

Yeah, they'll be fine. You can smell if bread products are going mouldy even before you can see the mould. Give them a good sniff. It's only a best before date, not a consume by date.

allmycagesweremental · 14/03/2026 09:26

They appear to be fine although I may be back on later with a new post asking for ideas on why I’m suddenly being sick when all I’ve had to eat is crumpets and a cup of tea 😂😂

they smelled absolutely fine before toasting and I did thoroughly check for mold but think being in the fridge may have staved that off. They’ve toasted beautifully and actually feel fresher now they’re toasted than before. Taste perfectly normal too.

do people usually keep crumpets in the fridge? Is this what you are supposed to do with them? Mine are usually in the bread bin so I would’ve normally chucked them once past the date.

I often keep mine in the fridge - for just this reason.
Does mean you really need to let them come up to room temperature before toasting to get the best from them, though.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 14/03/2026 09:36

They’ll be fine but I wouldn’t eat them as I really don’t like crumpets 😜 The texture is weird and melted butter makes me want to heave. But like others I ignore BB dates, so unless there’s visible mould just tuck in!
