To Spend £100 on Wine for a Dinner

Having a big birthday celebration at my house with four other friends. Having a local restaurant cook and deliver a meal. A bit like a private chef but more like a fancy takeaway.

With sparkling wine to start and a spare bottle, I was going to spend about £100 on 6 bottles of wine. DH thinks this is outrageous and a lot of money to spend on wine for a dinner of 5. AIBU?

Sounds fine to me…. But then I can bang through £32-38 of wine on a Friday with three friends in my kitchen. That would be a bottle each across a whole evening…

So £16 per bottle. Not outrageous. Having more than a bottle per person is too much though imo.

BellaEllaWella · 13/03/2026 18:30

That’s fine - I thought you meant a £100 bottle!

Everlil · 13/03/2026 18:43

I thought you meant £100 a bottle! £16 is a normal price for wine - I’d say splash out a bit more as it’s your birthday!

Edited

I was going to say it wasn’t enough!!

RubyFatball · 13/03/2026 18:45

It’s a pretty normal amount. If you ask me. If you have lots left over it keeps!

If you are spending decent money for lovely food and a memorable dinner you don't want to be drinking plonk, you want to be choosing decent wine that you will really savour, with different wine appropriate to each course.

If you can afford it.

Which you seem confident you can.

Cheers! Enjoy your birthday.

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 14/03/2026 12:07

It’s your big birthday, do what you want. We often spend £16-£20 on bottles not that you need to justify it. Is he always this much fun?

Whatwouldyousayto · 14/03/2026 12:09

Is that enough? Make sure you have another few bottles in (could be cheaper) when we host dinner parties we plan for 2 is per person plus intro drinks and after

Yes 🙌 more if you want to dance on tables 😂😂

Pryceosh1987 · 14/03/2026 23:53

Nice. I would of bought 5 family sized pizzas and some big bottles of pop.

youalright · 14/03/2026 23:56

I don't think thats enough wine you don't get many glasses out of a bottle I would aim for 2 each

CmonBobby · 14/03/2026 23:57

I’d probably get a couple of extra bottles of chicken wine just in case and I’m sure your friends will bring wine as well. But yes it sounds lovely!! And very justifiable. Enjoy

For a special occasion, including fizz, I would expect the average price per bottle to be more than that. I would anticipate £20+ per bottle for a special occasion (and obviously the sky is the limit!) When considering how much of the cost of wine is duty and VAT (particularly after the recent duty increase) around £15-£20 is the sweet-spot for value and performance (for still wines) - without looking for anything ‘special’.

Also that doesn’t sound like an excessive amount of wine each. Four of us at new year went through 8 bottles and some liqueurs. I would normally plan on 1.5-2 bottles a head for a celebration type event.

IndigoBluey · 15/03/2026 00:51

If 5 people and 100 spend, 20 a bottle which seems reasonable for a nice birthday celebration. Not sure what DH problem is?
