To think so many people have main character syndrome these days

I have misophonia which doesn't help, but I dread getting the train which I have to do to work 3 times per week. If it's rammed I can't even listen to music all the time because if I'm standing up I have to constantly be aware of who's around me, getting on and off the train etc.

So many people are just so loud, as if they're the only ones on the train. People of all ages, incapable of talking at a normal volume. I will let teenagers off as they're not yet adults but I am sick of hearing people just shouting at top note, bellowing across the carriage, cackling loudly at the top of their lungs. People have no consideration for others, it just makes the journey so stressful. Anyone else?

I feel exactly the same. Commuting is the worst and it’s like a cess pool on trains these days filled with such poor personal hygiene and bad manners.

What does ‘main character syndrome’ mean?

I would say that they think everything revolves around them, they act as if they're the only/most important people on the train, they must be heard by everybody and do not need to consider anyone else.

The hygiene is another issue. Sniffing and snorting loudly every second, not bothering to blow their nose (often men I've found)

I was in a café with a group of very young adults (I'd say around 20-21) sitting on the next table. I ended up moving to another room because they were literally screaming, in the middle of a cafe. No consideration at all.

i blame social media. The constant need for attention and validation.

Mosaic123 · 13/03/2026 17:49

I sometimes think it's performative. They want everyone to see that they are having A Good Time.

Soufriere · 13/03/2026 17:49

We’ve just been on holiday. Predominately American guests at our hotel. They really like to be seen and heard. Standing next to your mate? Why not shout, so everyone can hear your conversation?

So loud and obnoxious and oblivious to anyone but themselves.

Having just watched MAFS, I despise anyone who cackles in a public setting.

Yeah, it’s so gross!! All the coughing and spluttering everywhere, eughhhhhh

We have a friend who can’t moderate her laughter. She shrieks, squeals and cackles with tears running down her face. People stare. It’s mortifying to go out with her. She also laughs at absolutely anything, so you can’t avoid it.

Oh God, I'd have to terminate the friendship sorry

Alison Hammond can just about pull it off, but even she pushes her luck. Anyone else, hard no

Mingspingpongball · 13/03/2026 19:56

Don’t mean to be a bitch but is this misophonia?

ChefsKisser · 13/03/2026 19:58

Totally agree. It’s worse in groups as well- my mum and I were trying to walk through a coffee shop from our table at the back to the front door and a running group had just arrived. None of them moved to the side or made any effort to let us past in a small shop. We had to ‘sorry’ ‘excuse me’ ‘could you just’ our way past 15 odd people stood stock still chatting as though we were in the way. I could have screamed by the end!

I learned two things from commuting for 40 years. One was where the doors of the train would likely be, depending on the speed of the train entering the station.

Number two was how to enter a kind of self hypnotic trance that excluded everyone else in the carriage.

Both things saved my sanity.

QueenOfHiraeth · 13/03/2026 20:06

I think social media has convinced many people that the world revolves around them.

How much they believe this appears to be inversely proportional to their intelligence; people who are well informed, think and rationalise are able to understand the world outside their "bubble" involves a lot more than them but others do not.

These are the people who think their knowledge from Facebook, Insta, etc means their opinions carry the same worth as evidence from experts with years of study and research under their belts

Literally screaming! And they didn't get thrown out? Really??

3ormorecharacters · 13/03/2026 20:23

I really notice this as a primary school teacher. So many children now seem incapable of being part of a group - even during the register or really simple circle games, a significant proportion seems to feel the need to do something to take the limelight, usually some kind of silly and / or disruptive behaviour. It drives me mad and I'm sure it wasn't like this a few years ago.

The assistant had a word with them, they quietened down for a bit then started again.

Usually ends in hocking on the platform when they get off 🤢

Im not able to blow my nose. It was cauterised as a child and it went wrong, and I cannot blow it. I try hard not to sniff but currently have a cold and it’s unavoidable at times. I don’t commute but am sometimes in public… I’m not sure this alone makes someone a knob. I try hard not to do it!

But perhaps I am an unhygienic knob 🥴

Lottapianos · 13/03/2026 21:31

A large number of people seem to have no idea how to behave appropriately in a shared public space

ohyesido · 13/03/2026 21:43

I had to move seats this morning because some family behind me were giggling, shouting, blowing raspberries and head butting the back of my seat.

Missingpate · 13/03/2026 21:48

I travelled to and from London on the train this week, couple of hours each way. It had been a while since I’d been on a train. Journey in was rammed and I was lucky to have a seat. I was trying to work and the young man sitting behind me proceeded to make phone call after phone call at full volume, all work calls, all punctuated with yeah buddy and right bro etc. it was like that Dom Joly sketch. I could have cheerfully throttled him after a while. Such a relief when he got off.
And everyone seemed to be coughing.
But at least I had a seat.

Stupid0849303o · 13/03/2026 22:53

Seat getting knocked every second from the person sitting behind faffing around
