Do I still need to collect the antibiotics if I’m feeling better?

I sent a swab to the doctor because I had a bit of inflammation down bellow and he prescribed some steroid cream which cleared it up, I am sure it was just from pads but now I have a message saying the results have shown an infection and he’s sent a prescription for antibiotics to my pharmacy.
I’m just wondering if I should still take them because an infection was detected or not now as it’s cleared up on it’s own?
I know you shouldn’t take antibiotics if you don’t need to but then it might come back when I stop the cream.

I wouldn’t. Sounds like any infection you had is now gone?

That’s what I was thinking

I would collect them in case it comes back so you've got them

Fairly obviously, phone your gp and ask them.

hallomynameisinigomontoya · 13/03/2026 12:12

you need to ask your GP. It really depends what the infection is and if it's likely to have cleared up on its own or if it's more likely that the cream has stopped the symptoms for a while.

YABU, steroid cream reduces inflammation, but you had a swab taken and the results have found an infection, sensitive to the antibiotics your GP has prescribed. You need to take the antibiotics as prescribed to treat this infection

midwalker · 13/03/2026 12:20

What’s the infection? That is relevant.

Branster · 13/03/2026 12:26

Go and collect them and take them as prescribed.

I agree, the infection may still be there and could flare up after the steroid effect wears off

chamydia or gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat. It often has no symptoms, especially in women, but can lead to serious health issues if left untreated, such as infertility.
no symtoms pay attention

I don’t know it just said your swap has shown an infection, if it was a specific infection I would have thought he would have specified.
I could ring and ask reception but it’s not on my NHS app

You could ask the pharmacist but they might refer you back to the GP for advice.

IsThisLifeNow · 13/03/2026 13:47

what antibiotic is it? that could give a clue as to what the infection is There are plenty of infections that could affect you without it being an STI so don't worry that it'll definitely be an STI

Iknowasong · 14/03/2026 10:57

Flucloxacillin 500
