Does anyone know what I can put in this padding pool to sort the bacteria? Standing water issue (On my ow with DC)

Recently single parent and totally on my own so sorry if this is a silly question.

DC have a small water play pool thing. I’ve ignored it for months. It’s full of water and has been for a long time. It’s had rainfall in it but from a brief google it still constitutes standing water and can be dangerous.

Probably best to replace the thing anyway but how can I ensure it’s bacteria free before tipping all the water out? Is there a treatment I can use? I’ve looked on B and Q but feeling totally out of my depth (pardon the pun!). Any help massively appreciated

If you just want to empty the water then just poor it down the drain. No need to treat the water before discarding it.

Haggisfish3 · 13/03/2026 08:31

Just tip it out. You could add bleach to it but seems pointless if you then tip it out.

veryvanessa · 13/03/2026 08:37

Just tip the water out and give it a clean. No need to replace.

Worriemim · 13/03/2026 08:51

I’ve read you’re supposed to treat standing water though? It’s been like this for almost a year I think @changenameagain555 @Haggisfish3 @veryvanessa

Why would you treat it if you’re just going to tip it away? If it goes down a drain, it will at some point reach a treatment centre before going back into the drinking water system (although I guess that depends on which water company and their robustness of systems).

if you treat it with chemicals, then you’re going to wash those chemicals into the water table.

just tip it down a drain.

ForeverPombear · 13/03/2026 08:54

I think you're really over thinking it. Just tip it out and give it a clean.

Seeline · 13/03/2026 08:54

How big is it?
Kids paddling pool, 3-4 feet diameter, just empty it down a drain, or over a flower bed.
Give it a good scrub with Milton.
When you use it again, just put a few inches of water in and never leave it more than a couple of days before refilling. If not in use, turn it upside down or stand on its edge.

itsthetea · 13/03/2026 08:55

Treat it before you play in it or drink it yes
Not to chuck it

then clean the pool properly with soap and water or a bit of bleach if paranoid

Stillreadingalot · 13/03/2026 08:55

I agree with others - tip it out and then give the pool a good clean and refill

mindutopia · 13/03/2026 08:56

You don’t want to be pouring chemicals down the drain or into your garden.

mummybearSW19 · 13/03/2026 08:58

Tip it over a flower bed. Or the compost heap.

then Scrub with Milton and soap before you refill. If packing away make sure it is completely dry. Otherwise it will be mouldy by the time you want to use it and you will have to rescrub it with Milton.

Sahara123 · 13/03/2026 09:00

Never heard of this in many years of paddling pool use. Just chuck it over the lawn/flower bed/ gravel/ down a drain, clean and reuse.
What is it in the water that you’re worried about?

Chatsbots · 13/03/2026 09:02

I have loads of water containers around my garden. Tip it out before the UV gets up as it will go green and it's a PITA to get algae off surfaces and you get mosquitoes.

My hens prefer to drink standing rainwater than tap water! It will be fine for your garden or down the drain.

Octavia64 · 13/03/2026 09:04

I had a hot tub.

if you are going to get in to a hit tub or paddling pool then the water should be reasonably clean.

for paddling pools this is usually by filling them from the tap and then emptying on the garden and refilling every week or so.

for hot tubs you can get various chemicals.

if you are not planning on getting into it you don’t need to do anything before emptying it onto your garden. Gardens love bacteria.

Favouritefruits · 13/03/2026 09:05

Tip water out, clean and scrub pool, refill with water.

Moveoverdarlin · 13/03/2026 09:06

Tip it out. Clean it. Wait another month until it’s not freezing. Clean again. Refill it on a sunny day.

I'm in the building trade, deal with a lot of stagnant and stale water - just chuck it down the drain or in the garden.

The bacteria types that you are concerned about like a body of water, often dark and at a specific temperature, they won't survive once tipped out in the ground.
