@Trusttheawesomeness

Is your self esteem really that poor that you think that’s an appropriate response to someone who has made a post asking for help with something?

Mt563 · 13/03/2026 03:33

It's about card details vs bank account details.

Your bank account has a sort code and account number. Those stay the same for as long as the account is open. They are used by other people to send you money.

The debit card is linked to that sort code and account number but can replaced without impacting the account details.

Your new card will have a different long number and ccv number. these are your card details. You use them to pay money out online, eg when shopping. So if you have card details saved on a site to make payment quicker, you'll need to re enter those.

You've got a new card and therefore new card details but your account and account details are the same. Your wage will go into your account as normal and you'll be able to access it with your new card.

Very clearly explained without the need for ridicule or snark.

No one knows anything until they learn it. OP now knows. All those being snarky should have a look at themselves.

You’re not sorry, but you should be because your attitude is the thing that’s “actually quite shocking”. Not everyone has had a bank account since 12, and regardless if you’ve never had this happen to you before then you’re not going to have the knowledge.

It’s a shame you’re not as well versed in manners and empathy as you are in banking. You’ve gone out of your way to make digs at this poster and it’s quite frankly shameful. Maybe, you’re just not as bright as you seem to think you are? I didn’t really think emotional intelligence was much of a skill until I come across people like you. Common sense indeed.

You’re clearly an adult and this person is obviously anxious and the way you keep on criticising this person is wholly unnecessary. If you can’t deliver help in a nice manner, don’t bother. Really, isn’t difficult.

OP: compare it to changing the lock on your house door. Nobody can get in using the original key, but the house is still there, and the post can still be delivered.

That’s a brilliant analogy. I was going to go with a Netflix account. Your password has been changed but the account is still there.

ThatLilacHedgehog · 13/03/2026 01:59

I’m not worried about that now as the card has been cancelled, I’m just worried I won’t get paid my wages as my card is cancelled ?

Wages get paid to your bank ACCOUNT not your bank CARD. You only get payments via your card if you’re getting a refund.

LilyBunch25 · 13/03/2026 09:47

Hopefully OP you're reassured by the sensible comments on here and as I'm assured your account is still open and it is just your card thats being replaced you don't need to worry. Hope the unnecessary snipey comments haven't put you off MN completely 🙈

This! Why is this not taught in schools?

RandalsAunty · 13/03/2026 09:58

Cancelling a debit card does not mean closing the account.
As long as you have the bank account that you used to get your wages paid to open, you will get paid. your debit card acts as a means to access your account, there are other means …

Dontcallmescarface · 13/03/2026 09:58

Of course you will. I lost my debit card and rang the bank to cancel it and get a new one....it happens to a lot of people everyday. Cancelling a card does not = cancelling your bank account.

Cricketashes · 13/03/2026 09:54

This! Why is this not taught in schools?

I suppose because schools expect parents to do some parenting when it comes to teaching their children basic life skills?

Tacohill · 13/03/2026 10:05

The actual account stays the same and so any money going into it will be as normal.

So yes you’ll still get your wages :)

Howmanycatsistoomany · 13/03/2026 10:04

How is this basic life skills?

Banking is completely different to when we were kids and so even if your parents taught you, it likely wouldn’t be relevant today.

Schools could not teach this either.

You’re also overlooking the fact that many children are raised in homes where they’re not even taught to brush their teeth, let alone given any financial advice.

Something like this has nothing to do with being dumb or not being taught properly, it’s simply something that you’re unlikely to know unless you’ve had a reason to learn it.

Tacohill · 13/03/2026 10:12

OP ignore the snippy comments.

Some people are so miserable in their lives that they only come on the internet to try and make people feel bad about themselves.
Misery loves company.

Most of us are here on MN to help each other by giving and receiving advice, not to be bitchy.

Moltenpink · 13/03/2026 10:13

In support of the OP, I work in payroll and loads of adults try to give their card details when setting them up for the bacs run. Many don’t understand what an account number is. Not unusual if you’ve never been told the difference.

GeminiGiggles · 13/03/2026 10:17

Yes you'll still get paid. Usually payroll is done on the account number and sort code anyway as opposed to card.

However I will also add that even payments being refunded to a cancelled card will still usually go through it just may take longer and if you have problems to contact your bank.

I add this because I recently had to cancel a card whilst a refund was pending and was worried it wouldn't go through and when I searched online for info felt it was a struggle to get an answer so I hope this comes up for someone in the future!

Perhaps she’s young and just learning these things as we all once did.
Not everyone is a smart arsed know it all.

Thank you - it’s the type of question my 18/21 year olds would ask and it may be that OP doesn’t have anyone close to ask.

I hope that if my DCs can’t ask me a question [or just want to try and sort something out without running to mummy] and direct their queries elsewhere, they aren’t made to feel stupid and foolish for asking. Developing the courage to ask for help is a crucial adult skill.

Thereissnowinmywellies · 13/03/2026 10:33

PollyBell · 13/03/2026 05:02

But if the OP actually read what people are telling them and not drip feeding maybe they could take in more?

If peeops read the thread they wouldn't keep repeating the same advice either.🙄

PrettyPickle · 13/03/2026 10:38

Think about it like this. You have a bank account and money can be paid into that account by bank transfer, a cheque or cash payments in at a counter . So your wage presumably gets paid in by bank transfer and will sit in your bank account until you call on it or make a withdrawal.

When you want access to the money in your account, you have several choices of how you do that. You can do it in person at the bank with the appropriate ID, you can transfer it out or you can use your debit card and ask for cashback when shopping or maybe write a cheque out. These are just examples.

By cancelling your debit card and asking for a new one, you have temporarily removed a cash withdrawal method from your account, but it will be re-instated when the new card arrives. You haven't cancelled your account or anything, so payments will still go in and out, just not with the convenience of a debit card until the new one arrives.

Isobel201 · 13/03/2026 12:50

it was the confusion when the OP said credit card instead of debit card. Now she said debit card, I understand. Its just a payment method - the account still exists.

It will still go into the related bank account. A new card would usually be delivered in 3-5 working days

Billybob10 · 13/03/2026 18:49

and this is why schools should teach banking and life skills not algebra.

SchoolMom1979 · 14/03/2026 07:02

How old are you?! Anyway, like many others have said already, your salary will be paid, unless your actual account is frozen. If it's just the card, you're fine.
