To want to take major birthday off work and the day after off to gain a long weekend.
FT working parent?

If your having two days "to yourself" is this wasteful and means you should not buy additional leave to have more time off with kids in the holidays ?

Of course it's not unreasonable for you to use your annual leave in the way you want to. Daft to think otherwise

Your choice, regardless of the age you will be on your birthday. As long as at some point in the year you are having a week or more off to properly relax from work, no issue at all.

Of course it's fine. Enjoy your birthday.

When my child was school age they used to go on kids camp/holidays and all sorts all around the country. Holiday club was day trips to all sorts of places. They had much more fun doing that than being with me all the time and chose to do those things.

Taking time for myself on occasion also helped my wellbeing, so I could be much more present the rest of the time

I've always taken my birthday as annual leave, lately I've taken that week off. A gift to myself. Happy birthday op, enjoy!

Tomorrow is my birthday, and I took it off.

bridgetreilly · 12/03/2026 21:51

Well, I wouldn’t, but so long as you can afford the extra childcare in the holidays, then it’s up to you.

This! Never go to work on your birthday. Always take the day off. It's a great use of a day's annual leave. A treat to oneself.

I normally take my birthday off. So does DH.

We usually take each other's birthday off too, so we can do something together. Sometimes a visit to somewhere like a local national trust property, nature reserve etc. Sometimes a late breakfast, or tea and cake.

DC is now old enough to let themselves in, but we still aim ro get home around school finishing time.

For my 50th I booked myself a few days away the following month. It was to somewhere of interest to me. We had been as a family several times, but I wanted to be able to do things just for me for once.

I took 9 days off to celebrate my big birthday! And a lot of celebrating I did! 😁

I never work on my birthday. If my birthday is at the weekend I take a different day. When I am president of the UK I will make it compulsory to give everyone a day’s leave on or in lieu of their birthday.

I always think people who are at work on their birthdays are showing off and attention seeking 😝 at my current workplace it’s impossible to keep your birthday a secret as your manager gets a reminder and then you get a cringy card from everyone. It’s hideous.
