I’m feeling really useless in my new job. AIBU?

I recently started a new job, but I am feeing utterly useless. In team meetings, I don’t have a clue about most of what’s being discussed. Even when I’m being trained, half of it is going over my head. I am making mistakes, and don’t have a great deal of support in between the odd call with my manager.

I feel completely useless and it’s really getting me down. I’ve been there for 2 months and my confidence is on the floor.

I am sitting this evening, just feeling totally deflated and like I’m no good at anything. I just needed to offload, I hope that’s okay.

I'm 18 months into a new role, doing something completely different to anything I've done previously. I found at least the first 6 months completely baffling and am still coming up against things I'm not sure about. I'm lucky that I'm part of a really supportive team and I never feel stupid asking (stupid) questions, but honestly, there continues to be a lot of WTF moments. New jobs are really hard, you'll be doing better than you think you are, but see how you get on and if things don't improve, look for something else. Life is too short. You have my sympathy, its not easy 😘

Im 14 months into a completely new role and still have anxiety about what im doing and if im doing it right.
Im really lucky I have a supportive team although I'm sure deep down they're sick of my constant questions.
If youre enjoying the job, stick with it and the rest will come in time. We only learn by experience and questions. Make sure youre speaking to your manager and telling them where you feel you need additional training aswell.

MyNextDoorNeighbourVotesReform · 12/03/2026 21:57

When you're being trained are you writing down what's being said? When you are faced with training which you don't understand, can you ask for more in depth training so that you understand?

If it helps OP I’ve won awards in my field and have felt this way in every single job. I hate not having all the competence and knowledge from day one. You will get there. It will pass

JMSA · 12/03/2026 22:11

Please stick in, OP. I promise you will get there. And when you do, you’ll feel so much better and more confident.
Give it time 💐

Thank you all. Yesterday was really tough. So glad it’s the weekend!

Do you take notes? I would write everything down and look over it Ona evening.
i don’t retain information well either I’ve worked in my role 5 years now so I’m generally fine with the day to day but there’s still things that come up that I’m uncertain of so I check my notebook as often it’s something that happens infrequently and I forgot about it.
Try to catch yourself when you are being negative about yourself. It’s only thoughts and often they are not true. Try to change your mindset with positive affirmations about your self

Agree with the others, give it some time.

That said, it doesn't sound like they've done a good job of onboarding or handing over to you.

LadyVioletBridgerton · 14/03/2026 07:15

I’ve been doing my job for 20 months and I still feel like that. It’s highly technical and I often feel out of my depth but I just do my best. It’s Civil Service so I think they’re a bit more lenient anyway.

Squirrelchops1 · 14/03/2026 07:20

I'm 6 months into a new role and just as I think I'm getting it, something comes along and I feel like I'm on day 1 again.

Recently I have had space to look back over manuals, guidance etc they gave me in the first week. Although I'd looked at them it's only now it's all joining up and mskkng sense. Maybe go back a few steps and see if that helps.

I actually can’t remember how long the probation period is, but I think 6 months 🙈 I’ve not had much feedback, everyone is so busy.
