Is anyone else trying to earn more/get promoted and struggling?

I'm earning in the low 30s and trying to get upto high 30s,so I'm not exactly asking for millions but just an extra couple of hundred per month would help my life a lot.

I'm an Executive Officer in the Civil Service, trying to get to Higher Executive Officer. I am in a role where there is no line management, no projects, no opportunities to mentor/train others, and so on, basically I have asked my team leader for 'opportunities' like people will suggest and there are not.

I am applying for roles up to 40 miles away in other departments. EO to HEO is very competitive, I scored 5s on my personal statement which followed the star method and was turned down for interview.

The point I am being proactive, but it's a fact that EO to HEO is competitive, there are hundreds of people applying for 1 position, and there is always someone better, that's a fact.

Anyway, I'm looking outside the Civil Serivce for other roles, willing to take a side step to roles that would give me HEO behaviours.

Is anyone else trying to move up right now?

Have you looked for D/D opportunities? Or TCA? Even if it's in a different department to the one you're in, it'll give you a broader understanding & plenty to talk about on the application form. Even if you decide you don't like that area of work, D/D is usually of finite length & at least you'll know that's not an area for you.

The other thing is that as there's no money for the civil service at the moment, you might find permanent opportunities limited. It's the same in my department too (Home Office).

Ive just got a promotion from HEO to SEO and I've had to change department and it's taken ages. I got someone to give me feedback pn my application, my examples were OK but I needed to change the style I was writing in.

All I can suggest is that you keep applying. Times are very uncertain and people are staying put.

Good luck OP.

Honestly if opportunities are limited in the civil service, move elsewhere. There are pressures to cut costs there so move.

What skills and qualifications do you have?
