Why do you think mumsnet has a more wealthy user base than average or do you think it’s full of bullshitters?

I’ve been reading mumsnet threads regularly for a while now and have noticed the userbase seems to be far wealthy than the general population, based on the income threads and also other little things that give that feel.
Obviously I’m not saying I think everyone is wealthier than average on here I’m personally a broke loser and I’m sure there’s others like me, but I’ve been blown away by the sheer amount of people saying they earn 60, 70, 80 or even 100k like it’s average.

I personally don’t think it’s full of bullshitters as there are other hints like the fact the spelling and grammar used on here is typically far superior to other sites like facebook and obviously you’re unlucky to have a brilliant job if you’re SPAG isn’t spot on.

Anyway I like mumsnet and have nothing against people being better off than me I’m just musing what do you think it is about mumsnet that attracts more wealthier people typically?

Yea i engage in threads and may or may not believe posts. But it passes time.

I mean, if thats ok 😂

Fair enough, it’s a free country.

But I think its odd to engage in a discussion forum with people who you believe to be largely liars and fantasists.

Only mainly when it comes to earnings tbf!

Or anyone with twins who sleep in a box room 😬

Its a chat forum though, its not real life. Its not even a particularly serious chat forum, its like Take a Break or something.

People really do take it so seriously.

Its not that it dont believe they can. Its just i dont believe any posters when they say they do.

Interesting, but I earned £50k in 1999, which was the year I had my only child. For eight months (full on) work. I reckon that's probably around £120k nowadays with inflation.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/03/2026 20:33

There are a fair share of bullshitters but there is also a reasonable proportion of higher earners.

It is to do with the demographic London centric, well educated and older will tend to be higher earners.

Like a previous poster I do find the willingness of some people to disbelieve that women can be higher earners disappointing. This is one of the few places where women can get advice on how other women have managed to combine careers and motherhood. There have been some really positive threads where people have shared experiences and knowledge to support others. Many women in high earning roles have faced different challenges to their male colleagues.

It is really important to me that women on MN and their daughters feel that they have the skills and the right to push for higher paid roles if they want them.

Papyrophile · 12/03/2026 20:35

I do have signed off approved accounts for that year too. I might have to redact my name and address. Would you like proof that women could and did earn so much? Give me a few hours, and I can demonstrate.........

Papyrophile · 12/03/2026 20:45

Possibly because most of MN are the people whose taxes are paying for the benefits.... and some may feel their contributions to society are not being well spent.

Ooihuko · 12/03/2026 20:46

MidnightPatrol · 12/03/2026 10:40

I think it skews more wealthy than average.

I think people with higher incomes are more willing to talk about them.

And - there are also some bullshitters (apparent because their stories never add up!!)

15% of workers earn over £50k, so there are many of these people around. 1 in 20 earn >£100k.

Is that 15% women or both genders

No thats really not necessary, or relevant.

So why is it the default on any thread that if a woman says she earns £100k plus there will invariably be either a snarky post or a follow up thread like this one about the “mystery” of why so many women earn £100k?

It’s quite striking that if someone posts that her husband earns £100k on here she gets accused of bragging. If she says she earns £100k she gets accused of lying.

There are conservatively several hundred thousand people in the UK on that sort of salary, a percentage of whom are women. Surely its not beyond the realm of possibility that some are on Mumsnet?

I think it’s a very small minority that earn 100k of the uk population but seems to be more common on mumsnet along with 60, 70, 80 etc which are still twice the average wage.

I actually lean more into thinking posters are being honest and mumsnet just attracts a wealthier than average base and it got me wondering why/how that happened

Thanks, @Megifer, you've saved me at least half an hour finding the document.

But, I could find it quickly if needed. And that certainty is what distinguishes the fake and the genuine.

God almighty why would you do that?

Megifer · 12/03/2026 21:01

I cannot stress enough that posting payslips and offering to send me accounts makes no difference. The fuck is going on? 😂😂😂

Mumnetters are generally cleverer than the average. Therefore they earn more. They are also keen for their kids to do well and most won't take much nonsense. While usually sympathetic to bad luck stories if the cause is genetic, I don't really believe most really pay more than lip service to most bad luck stories. Husbands cheat in every social class and I reckon most feel the same pain and shame and shock.

I ignore the relationships threads completely for example, and have done for 15 years. If you want advice from strangers about your relationships, you don't want to hear from me, because I'm not great at them.

Papyrophile · 12/03/2026 21:05

I reckon the MN media marketing team are upping the advertising rates tonight!

BlessedCheesemaker · 12/03/2026 21:11

I earn 900k for working from home and although it's a bit stressful I enjoy it and my boss is fine with my doing the school run and/or dual tasking by looking after my 3 DC while working. People just need to find better jobs.

Yeah I don't really see the point having a discussion with someone about important things which affect people's lives if its just for shits and giggles and I think you have to assume people are discussing things in good faith.

So while I would obscure or slightly alter details to protect my identity I wouldn't outright lie on here and if someone was lying then that's their weird hangup. I think it's a bit pathetic to lie to a bunch of total strangers.

But as I say, each to their own...

Papyrophile · 12/03/2026 21:24

Bully for you! From somewhere in England's SEastern corner perchance?

TrumanShows · 12/03/2026 21:42

On these income threads you get same people I feel. People don't bother changing the usernames. You get high earners who rightly feel they deserve it. You get the chronic low earners who admittedly try their best but have never earned much. The people who live off benefits. And the occasional high earner "who wants to pay more tax".

Dontlletmedownbruce · 12/03/2026 21:45

It depends on the thread. I think most people here are on low or middle income and are obsessed with their budget or cost of living. I don't get the impression it's high earning users at all.

localnotail · 12/03/2026 21:46

I think a lot of people on here are ok money wise and probably well educated but add a fair bit to their supposed income. I suspect most are earning average type salary, or not earning at all - staying at home - but like to pretend they do.

EvilNextDoor · 12/03/2026 21:57

I suspect it’s a mix of truth and bull shitters. This site definitely appeals to the middle class parents. Saying that I have been here since my children were born (possibly before) and they are teens now and the demographic hasn’t changed that much from what I can remember.

I earn well as does my husband, but we don’t earn what we used to…no private school here, but we have always encouraged our children to do well.

This is the misunderstanding, 5% workers in the UK earn over £100k. 35 million work.

That means in the UK alone almost 2 million people work. Sure less of those will be women. But in the other hand I suspect the age on here is a bit older than average.

So just under 1 million women are in the UK on around £100k. That's a lot of people.

Given this is largely about reading and writing, relatively long form arguments. It's likely to attract a disproportionate number of those highly paid women.

I write this whilst relaxing from my job that pays £200k

You earn £200k because your hard work and skill paid off
