Why do you think mumsnet has a more wealthy user base than average or do you think it’s full of bullshitters?

I’ve been reading mumsnet threads regularly for a while now and have noticed the userbase seems to be far wealthy than the general population, based on the income threads and also other little things that give that feel.
Obviously I’m not saying I think everyone is wealthier than average on here I’m personally a broke loser and I’m sure there’s others like me, but I’ve been blown away by the sheer amount of people saying they earn 60, 70, 80 or even 100k like it’s average.

I personally don’t think it’s full of bullshitters as there are other hints like the fact the spelling and grammar used on here is typically far superior to other sites like facebook and obviously you’re unlucky to have a brilliant job if you’re SPAG isn’t spot on.

Anyway I like mumsnet and have nothing against people being better off than me I’m just musing what do you think it is about mumsnet that attracts more wealthier people typically?

i also don’t know why people are so focused on it, there’s like 10 Millon people on here.

I definitely don’t believe this, Look at the active threads & how many people are “looking”.

TrumanShows · 12/03/2026 18:57

DH earns c£200k . He works very hard

NovemberMorn · 12/03/2026 19:01

I think there is probably a mix of posters, mostly women, rich, poor, and the majority somewhere in between.
I do notice some people like to start threads about savings, income, luxuries etc...in order to mention how much they have...that usually arouses my bullshit meter.

Jesus, it wasnt a 'gotcha' at all, I was just chatting in line with your post, dont be so uppity

I dont have a downstairs bathroom, it was a joke.

Why are people so serious on here. Its so tiresome.

Apologies, it came across as if you were pointing out an error when I had already noted it was rough estimate. As an aside though - uppity has long been considered an offensive word with a lot of racist and sexist connotations so that feels like an uncomfortable choice of word to put someone down if you feel challenged.

Dragonscaledaisy · 12/03/2026 19:01

I don't think MN has a 'wealthy' user base at all. I'm often surprised by how little disposable income people have and how high their outgoings are. I think it's very representative of the middle.

Take it as you will.

I like uppity

And often I am also uppity. When I choose to be.

There is a lot of bragging and judgemental bullshit. Its very middle class overall

This! I think it's full of trolls and bots or whatever. If you earn good money then you've probably got a good brain. If you've a good brain, you don't need mumsnet/strangers advice on life. The emotional intelligence and sensitivity levels are atrocious on here and the amount of 'go off sick' advice suggests that the vast majority of posters are not the brightest. I'd guess most are low/average earners with low/average levels of intelligence.

Been on here for 20+ years and don’t recognise this at all. I’d happily bet money on this site being populated by people with higher than average intelligence. (Not a massively risky bet)

I was surprised recently when a poster, who was struggling financially, said she was trying to save about £800 a year for holidays because she liked to travel, and others told her that was extravagant.

Bikenutz · 12/03/2026 19:11

I have name changed but have been using this site off and on for over 20 years, since before my first baby was born.

My theory is that the demographic skews a little wealthier than average because the site has been around for a long time and a lot of the original posters are now old! Women of mid thirties and upwards are more likely to have climbed the career ladder and be earning well, have a successful business, or had more time to accumulate some assets.

So I don’t think it’s all bullshit, although an anonymous forum is bound to attract some fantasists.

Don't you think the bragging and judgement comes from a place of insecurity though?

I think there’s also an element of competitive low consumption on here though- posters who talk about never heating their house above 14 degrees or holidaying on a shoebox under the stairs, and say no wonder the world is in a mess if people will insist on washing their towels more than once a year. And there’s also a small proportion of posters who just want to stick the boot in.

SixtySomething · 12/03/2026 19:14

I may be wrong here but generally suspect the ones which are specifically about how wealthy the OP is, are BS. I think wealthy people often don’t want to draw attention to to themselves and it wouldn’t occur to them to write a post about their money. They mix with people ‘on their level’ and talk about the things that interest wealthy people.
Boarding sch/ private school posts are different. They’re more about getting help and advice about a specific situation where friends irl can’t help them.
Don’t forget many boarding school kids are there because a parent works abroad and fees are paid by the company. So they probably couldn’t pay the fees from their income.

Bins is the latest

Everyone seems to have empty bins, they never throw any normal waste away.

Whereas the majority of us have overspilling bins.

I’ve never understood the accusations of people overstating their salary on an anonymous forum like this one. Why would I try to impress someone with my earnings when they literally have no idea who I am? It makes no sense to me.

They probably are rather insignificant in the real world, whereas on an anonymous forum they can be whatever they want to be.

In my experience, really well off people tend not to talk about what they have.

But then they happily live in an environment destroying 'period' property.

You must live a very narrow life if you don't believe that anyone earns mega money. Of course they do! What do you call mega money? If you're talking a million or more then that will be of course be very few people, but I know plenty of people on 100 to 150k, and a couple of over 200k. If you're a professional person, doing well in your career, it's not unusual, and I'm not talking London or the SE either.

"I dont believe a single poster who says they are on mega money 🤷‍♀️"

JLou08 · 12/03/2026 19:34

I think some are lying.
I also think there could be more professionals on this site due to anonymity.
My earnings are average, actual average not MN average, but I do have a professional job. MN is my preferred social media site because I can't interact with debates on sites like Facebook where I could be identified by a client. I can't interact with clients in my personal life and I can't publicly share political views.
Threads here are also more interesting. Facebook comments are usually one liner digs rather than actual debate or support so I think this site will attract more intelligent people, not all intelligent people are wealthy but a lot of wealthy people are intelligent.

Why don't you believe a single poster could earn a very high salary? High earners still use social media and forums.

amibeingaknob · 12/03/2026 19:36

But arent there a lot of people - like me - who've been here decades? And their wealth - or lack thereof - changes? Im early 50s, in my 20s and 30s I was loaded as I ran my own very successful business. Then I was really poor on a low wage and part time work whilst raising my kids, and then a messy divorce where I walked away from everything due to wanted to run for abusive ex. So up until 2 years ago I was totally broke. Career change then I started another business recently that has completely taken off and Ive gone from 20k a year to 100k. It will probably be at 200k in a year or so and I will keep going until retirement at 70 (if I still want to do it).

I dont think Im that unusual that wealth changes, and Ive been here forever.

TrumanShows · 12/03/2026 19:33

Can I clarify what you define as "mega-money"?

Politely, im not interested in any sort of discussion around what others think mega money is, or a debate about how its not its actually very low once you factor in private school, mortgages in London etc. And I wont change my view that I assume everyone on MN who says they are high earners is lying through their teeth. So what I think is "mega money" doesn't matter.

(Edited to clarify i mean anyone on MN)

Papyrophile · 12/03/2026 19:40

Your bathroom downstairs is a cloakroom or a loo. Or a bootroom if you have space for a shooting party to leave their wet weather gear to dry.

Edited to refine the nuances, darling.

It's a bathroom if it has a shower and/or bath. Cloakroom would then be a separate room for coats. Boot room is for muddy outdoor gear/dog shower, etc
