Our next door neighbours have 2 friendly cats who spend a lot of time hanging out in our garden
When we first moved in we would pet them (a decision I now regret!)

They are now a real nuisance

  1. Constant giant poos in the garden, to the extent that we can't really enjoy it as have to pick up about 5-6 poos every day before we can use it, and I worry about toxoplasmosis with our baby

  2. Will jump on our laps and dig their claws in - this hurts! It's got to the point where I can't go in the garden to read a book because they immediately jump on me and if I push them off or move seats they just follow and keep digging their claws in

  3. wait by the back door and as soon as you open the door (eg to take bins out) they dash into the house and have to be chased out.
Several times I've not noticed them sneak in (eg open window while cooking) and have found them chilling out upstairs

So Mumsnet, hit me with your best cat repellent recipes or techniques!

I've never had cats so have no idea what might work. I obviously don't want to do anything that will be unkind to the cats but it's beyond a joke now, I feel like they've totally taken over our garden

Get a dog?
Sorry, I realise not helpful, but a hopeful bump to someone that knows what to do.

Water spray or water pistol. Also cat gravel where they want to poop.

Woof into a recorder and play it back on loop on speakerphone into the garden.

My DM used to fill large plastic lemonade bottles with water and stand them around the garden. Apparently the light reflecting off the bottles is supposed to freak them out. You have to keep moving them around from time to time as they get used to them in one place. DM claimed it worked but I have no personal experience.

Some people swear by lion poo. B and Q sell it. I tried to post a link but it doesn't seem to work

Still can't get the link to work but the product is called Silent Roar if you want to Google it

Borrow the most annoying dog you know? Offer some dog respite for a few days. Let it bark. A lot. Let it chase the cats.

GasPanic · 11/03/2026 16:26

Ultrasonics.

Aren't guaranteed to work but worth a try.

Their extreme enthusiasm for going into your house is odd. I've had the occasional neighbourhood cat wander int the house when the patio door is open, but nothing like you're describing. Are they Bengals? I ask because Bengals have a reputation for (among other things) being keen to enter multiple houses.

I can only suggest the sonic repellant. The couple opposite to us use one and they believe it is effective.

We have a feral ginger cat coming round daily. It came into our house and launched itself at one of my cats. I’d like to know how to get it rid of it without bothering our two lol.

Another suggestion for borrowing a dog. Preferably a Jack Russell. Every one I've ever had has kept cats away.
