To ask how you treat yourself ?

Apologynotaccepted · 11/03/2026 13:19

I am single and I work really hard - I’m financially stable for the first time ever. I’d really like to buy myself my own special gifts (I’ve been lucky to have lovely partners but never at a time when money was available for treats or gifts so now I really want the experience.
If you treat yourself - how do you do it? Monthly budget? I’d be interested in slightly larger than a weekly bunch of daffs which is my current treat

I don't view life through the lens of "treats" and "rewards".

Me neither.

If I've got the money I love to spend it travelling.

Anonanonanonagain · 11/03/2026 13:22

@JacquesHarlow why bother bloody responding so?

@Apologynotaccepted I treat myself to massage/indian head massage/japanese head spas when I feel the need. I subscribe to both a beauty box and a lingerie box once a month which is lovely to have nice things arrive just for me.

Qashgal · 11/03/2026 13:31

Unfortunately the only way I treat myself is through the medium of biscuits. I'm dairy free so can't have chocolate and have a very low tolerance for alcohol so the 'usual' quick treats are out. I have tried massages previously but I get very weary of all of the touching - well before it's over so it becomes more akin to torture by the end no matter lovely it is at the start.
However I do have a penchant for long lie-ins which I can do as I'm recently retired.
But I'm going to keep an eye on this thread as I ( and my family who want to treat me but I never want anything)!can indulge in.

I have monthly budgets for things. For example, i allocate a set amount to "social", "home", "beauty (covering clothes, make-up, hair cuts" etc. Don't necessarily spend it all every month but i have separate pots in my bank account so it accumulates. You could do something like that and have a "me" pot, or "treat" pot.

frozendaisy · 11/03/2026 13:35

I buy trees for the garden - like a hazel tree so the wildlife can enjoy the nuts type thing

shellyleppard · 11/03/2026 13:35

I buy and build Lego. Currently building the tulip bouquet 💐 . Built a sushi restaurant the other day 😁

Belladog1 · 11/03/2026 13:38

I treat myself to cosmetics and handbags. If I have a small amount of leftover money I will buy a couple of nail polishes or a eye shadow palette. If I have more - then I will casually peruse the handbags online and accidentally purchase one.

I get a manicure twice a month, keep my eyebrows waxed and groomed, and buy a new piece of clothing every season. I also treat myself for things like a new job or losing 3 stone. Life can be tough so I believe in treating myself and the ones I love when I can.

takealettermsjones · 11/03/2026 13:44

I don't have a set budget but for the past year or so I've been clearing out all the cheap/worn items in my wardrobe and replacing them with better quality versions. It's a massive mindset change as I grew up poor so I have a habit of buying the cheapest of everything. I feel very luxurious now!

NotMeAtAll · 11/03/2026 13:47

Cake!

Actually, I've started doing this too. I have spent years buying just Tesco clothing or shite from Shein. I have now started buying a few nice items and gradually binning or donating my older clothes.

I used to get quite sweaty as a younger woman, and I really didn't want to buy anything decent as I felt I ruined it instantly. But since hitting the menopause I appear to have dried up (in more ways than one) and have started to buy some nicer items, especially in the sales. I then put them away so I have new for the next season.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/03/2026 13:49

When I’ve been busy and working hard and feel like life is getting monotonous, I go to the health suite at the gym where I work. Sauna and steam and then a very cold shower and then lie on the hot beds for a while. I always feel great afterwards. My membership is only £12.50 a month because I work there.

I really dislike spending money and I hate shopping, so treats for me would never involve buying stuff for myself. Although I do actually buy cake quite regularly so I guess that’s the exception to my rule!

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 11/03/2026 13:52

Days out or a holiday with ….myself.
So something like a day in a new town and then lunch at an Ivy restaurant or Ubers there and back to a concert. I get to hang out with the best person in the world, me!
I love it!

Because it's a really odd way for an adult to describe the act of spending money they have on things or experiences they want.

If you want something and have the money then buy it. It's not 'gifting', 'an experience' or 'treats'. It's just buying stuff or paying to do things.

OP, I'd suggest you work how much money you can afford to spend this way after accounting for everything else and set it aside. Then when you decide you want something and have the money just buy it. It could be few things in quick succession or you might go months or weeks without wanting anything, either is fine.

If you decide you want something more expensive eg a holiday, jewellery or expensive tech then you might need to work out how to spread the cost

The subscription box sounds great as it would be a surprise too!

I used to really think certain things were very fancy when I was younger- and they would be stuck in my journal like a vision board- Laduree macarons, the White Company are two of them. I could start there - all the things I dreamed of having/ trying when I was younger

It’s not odd at all- very common parlance - things are ‘midweek treats’ in the bakery near me
’treat yourself’ is a very common phrase

I do understand how to buy things - and also how to budget - I was just asking how others do it- and for a little chat about it

@Bjorkdidit it really is not for you to police what people deem to be a personal treat or not. Live and let live and all that.

I think treat is the perfect word actually, what the OP is referring to is not buying a new white top because she needs/wants one it’s a bit more special than that. Almost like something people may consider a birthday gift/activity but on a more regular basis.
So for example I already have a membership to a lovely spa, spend on my Botox and so on and then every couple of months I go on an approximate £200 ‘date’ with myself as a treat.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 11/03/2026 14:22

Always have fresh flowers in the house, and I treat myself to a new houseplant occasionally. I buy myself good quality chocolate, and make myself a good breakfast almost every day. I try and make time for regular exercise, and the occasional long soak in the bath.

Eridian123 · 11/03/2026 14:25

I like a beauty box, for a monthly surprise. Especially the ones (e.g. OK mag) where you can see what is coming and skip it if it's not worth it.

I also like to make sure I do something just for myself once every 3 months or so, like an arts and crafts workshop, a theatre trip, or a day pass to a posh gym.
