Hannah Fry AI programme

Saw a programme about AI tonight with the brilliant Hannah Fry. This episode was about AI use in healthcare. Most of it was about healthcare and health insurance in US..God it was frightening. Truly awful. I cant go into detail here. It would take too long. You'll.have to watch the programme. But I dont think it's unreasonable to say that NO WAY do I want an insurance based healthcare system to be brought in to this country. It's all for profit and they juat dont treat you if it is not financially beneficial for rhem. Dont be fooled..by politicians who are trying to promote this. They want to make money at the expense of your health..Be warned. They pretend they dont want yo introduce the US modrl But they are lying. Please watch the Hannah Fry programme. She only spoke about the science and not anything directly political, but the information was worrying.

It was a really good programme and I think it was one of 3 episodes in her AI series. The guy who became psychotic with his use of AI and another guy where AI was encouraging him to assassinate the queen. Very scary. But yes the one about insurance and it gave you your time is up date for hospital care, beyond belief. Health care professionals being penalised at work with disagreeing with what AI told them.. crazy

Agreed. Horrifying.

She's such a good communicator. The hot dog stall analogy was a simple and effective way of explaining AI. Impressive range of interviewees too. Plus lots of fascinating footage about the Luigi Mangione phenomenon. Definitely one to watch....the programme and the eventual court case.

Thanks will check it out.

I love Hannah Fry and this series. She has a great way of explaining complex stuff for my tiny mind.

The more information about the downsides of AI the better, but how is it news to you that an insurance based healthcare system is potentially awful for members of the public, that's predated AI since forever.

People are trapped in jobs they want to leave because they can't lose their insurance, people are bankrupted by healthcare costs, the US spends more per capita on healthcare than the UK, despite the insurance system. That's all common knowledge.

Whyarepeople · 10/03/2026 09:29

A profit-based healthcare system makes no logical sense unless you believe healthcare is a luxury that only rich people can and should be able to access.

SurferRona · 10/03/2026 09:31

SO good! There was a R4 programme on AI Sunday early arvo which was good. Interesting point about how the pre 2012 internet is valuable, and ‘true’ (human) as it was pre LLM/AI proliferation. A researcher on there was saying how modelling shows these AI models collapse after 11 or 12 cycles of new versions teaching themselves based on previously generated AI content. It’s a risk I wasn’t aware of, as we as individuals and a society and our critical systems use it more and more and become more dependent in future years.

Also, I agree about the US healthcare system. Horrific. And don’t even think you’re ok if you’re wealthy. See Lionel Shrivers novel ‘So Much For All That’ for an insight into scenarios playing out day after day up and down the US for real.

Our NHS is flawed, it needs support, it needs reform, but my god we are lucky to have it.

And the programme brought that out in all its stark reàlity. But it hasnt got throufh to everyone because rhere are people who would vote for politicians who I believe would seek to introduce exactly such a system over here. And THAT I cannot understand.

The one she did on autonomous cars is much better, I found this somewhat pedestrian tbh, nothing particularly unexpected. I do love HF though!

Well if you're trying to get through to the turkeys voting for Christmas, you've got a long list.

Such as the people who voted leave seemingly oblivious to the fact that it would mean they were no longer entitled to live in Spain all winter.

Or the people who would lose benefits they currently receive.

A lot of people who vote Reform will be a lot worse off if they do win an election.

likelysuspect · 10/03/2026 09:54

Yes despite whats wrong with the NHS we must never lose it in its current form

watched those episode last night. My one main question was the lady with he bike wearing hi-viz or in dark clothing? Still a tragedy but why did the car not register. I understand that the cars aren’t good at recognising Jay-walkers but to what extent.

Favouritefruits · 10/03/2026 13:15

I’ve found the whole series really informative and very interesting! It’s so scary and it shocked me how long AI has been around. I assumed it was fairly new in the last two years or so I was so surprised.

I know. I really dont understand what they are thinking. I've tried to puzzle it out, but I just don' t get it. The only reason I've been able ro come up with is that they have a certain bloody mindedness because they don't like being told they are ' stupid ' for voting that way.....even though they are being irrational.

Agreed OP. The rest of the series was focused on AI but that episode was kind of weird in that the use of AI took a backseat compared to the "usual" workings of the healthcare industry in the US.

I have had first-hand experiences of it (prior to AI) and I couldn't believe how they aren't all rebelling. It's appalling, the care is not great (mine wasn't), you have to be careful that when you are unconscious you're on the ward they've billed you for, among other things.
When I went to the GP about an issue they basically asked "so what prescription are you looking for" rather than diagnosing me. Oh and you can only access treatment or services that are covered by your network (ie insurance company). Rather than what's best for you.

Surely most people here have enough experience dealing with insurance companies to realise they are not the people you want dictating the care you receive?! I'd rather rely on Ryanair for consistent, reasonable, patient-focused treatment!

People already have the option here of paying for private healthcare - why not do that if they prefer it and leave the NHS to those who want it?

@SurferRona was that "Sophia vs AI slop"? It was indeed interesting!

I know. That's the thing. It's a healthcare system that puts profit above appropriate treatment. It's horrifying.

I think the car was confused because it couldn’t decide if it was a bike or a person so just ignored it instead. I thought the implication was the lady killed was homeless so probably wasn’t wearing any specific safety wear - not really her fault though.

but even before Ai there was still methods used or formula's etc

Laughingravy · 11/03/2026 14:12

The scary take-away from this is these huge companies will spend any amount on an AI product development to make money but will do all they can to dodge any responsibility for their product's flaws if there is the slimmest of chances of blaming the user/operator. Not good.

SerendipityJane · 11/03/2026 14:46

Was it called AI or "AI" ?

If they said AI then it's of limited use. If they said "AI" and pointed out it's mere clever pattern matching then I'd bite.

I like HF, but she can come across as a bit "Hey wowsers" at time. I appreciate that is literally her job, but it can grate.
