We live in a rental property (me, DH, DS and DD)
There’s a slab of concrete in our garden which had a beam of wood on the outer edges that’s now gone rotten and has started to just fall part. I asked if we could have the wood either replaced or removed and the landlord said no and to just put the wood in the general waste - which Ive checked on the counsil website and it isn’t even allowed!! They also said that they won’t be removing the concrete (which I didn’t ask them to do, I was only referring to the wood)
we are now going to replace the wood and dispose of the old wood correctly. But I’m not going to be asking permission to replace it as it’s something I feel HAS to be done- the concrete edges are sharp! And I feel it’s unsafe for the children if they were to fall on it etc.
the landlord has previously said we can’t do certain things around the house e.g. paining, putting up curtain poles etc. previously. However I feel like this is probably different?

I just wondered generally if this is even our responsibility as it doesn’t state in our contract regarding the garden.

AIBU to replace it without asking? I’m a bit miffed about this tbh

@dizzydizzydizzy I have to say I was a bit surprised too. Anything we’ve asked to do to improve it has been met with a no. I actually asked to make the wall WHITE 😂
When the cooker broke they said they wouldn’t be replacing it etc too. I think it’s a basically a situation where they aren’t willing to invest ANY money but also don’t want us to either which doesn’t really make sense!

Sounds very bad. If the landlord provided the cooker, it would normally be their responsibility to get it repaired or replaced.

How did they justify not replacing the cooker? They have to, unless it wasn’t built in and they expressly gave it to you so it’s not included in the inventory.

Nameisntmine · 11/03/2026 09:10

@Snaletrale i think it was potentially left by the previous tenants. I can’t actually remember the situation now but I managed to get a free one from a friend so we decided not to kick off 😅

I think you're being a bit overly sensitive and fixated on the supposed danger to your children. They're both old enough to be told and understand that they should be careful or avoid this small area. Children trip and fall it's life and not the end of the world. Much as I'd love to they can't be wrapped in cotton wool.

kiwiane · 11/03/2026 09:56

It’s just a normal part of a garden that’s not perfectly paved and tidy so I wouldn’t make a big deal of it. Children benefit from some risk and hazards - this seems minor. The wood can go behind the shed.
The concrete doesn’t look dangerous but if it’s sharp you could use soil, gravel or wood against it.
You know what your landlord is like so I’d save your complaints for serious safety issues.

Hoppinggreen · 11/03/2026 10:09

You can just sort that out yourself, no need to bother your LL with it
As for curtain poles and painting you CAN in theory do these things without permission but you would have to restore everything to how it was when you moved in when you leave
From May its going to be so much harder to evict you as well so if you do decide to make any changes I woudl wait until after that
