What do pure gym classes entail?

I’ve booked into a pure gym learn to lift class this evening. Can’t cancel as it’s less than 4 hours away.

I am nervous as hell. I’ve never done a workout class before and I’m overweight so I’m worried I’m going to look like a fit! Has anyone been to them before? What do they entail?

Not been to one at Pure Gym, but at David Lloyd. They go through the important points you need to bear in mind when you start lifting - so lifting from yur legs not your back, how each lift should be carried out, and give you a demonstartion on what it should look like, and how to acheive proper form. In my experience, no-one will care that you're overweight (I am), and most people will be encouraging, because they see you're making an effort to improve your strength and fitness. Good luck - lifting is my favourite exercise in the gym, and I dont look like I should be doing it!!

LoudSnoringDog · 09/03/2026 15:00

Honestly no one in your gym class will care that you are overweight.

StrawberrySquash · 09/03/2026 15:03

You're grand! I go my local council ones. You have a mix of people, some thin, some not, some experienced, some new. That sort of class always has new people churning through. Let the instructor know you are new and don't know stuff - the point is to learn. Although I maintain the most important reason is to exert yourself and make your body make an effort. Not to lift a bigger weight than the next person and not to look amazing doing it. It's to move, because it's so good for your body and your mind.

inmyera · 09/03/2026 15:03

PureGym is a mixed bag! but nobody will care what you look like. I would go slightly early and tell the instructor you're new to classes and to lifting, and they should help you find the best weights for you

CraftyNavySeal · 09/03/2026 15:04

Depends on the class!

A learn to lift class won’t be fast paced and jumping around, it will be about safety and form. They will be showing you what to do so you can use the gym equipment properly by yourself.

No one will care what size you are, everyone minds their own business unless you are hogging equipment or doing something particularly bonkers.

Definitely do this

Seems like it could just be me in the class! I’m terrified

I don't know about Pure Gym.

Other gymgoers won't care about your weight.
You will be shown what to do by the trainer and it wilk be about technique.

When you start, it will be difficult, but it gets easier very quickly as long as you keep going, and you'll see results in no time.

Don't wear baggy clothing, and you don't need fancy kit.

I have leggings and a baggy t-shirt, is that okay?

That will be ideal.
I went to weights classes at my local leisure centre. Even the fit-looking youngsters found it hard to begin with and thought I'd been going for ages when I'd only been going there about 3 weeks.

Even if you hate the class, you switch off from 'mental load' for the duration, and you get toned.

Inthesensethat · 09/03/2026 15:17

As PP have said, no one will care! People are far more focused on themselves! It's a really positive first step. And honestly the thought of going is always waaay worse than actually going.
Agree that it's a good idea to get there a bit early. I like time to set up properly and the instructor can help with this as it's your first time. Don't worry about the weights for your first session, keep them super light and just focus on form. You can then build when you're feeling more confident.
I love pure gym, loads of classes and a great price. My one is very friendly and non intimidating too:)

MMAMPWGHAP · 09/03/2026 15:17

It’s not a class. They will talk to you about what you want to learn. Then show you how to safely do it. It’s more like a consultation.

TheStirrer · 09/03/2026 15:21

I go regularly to a lift class at pure gym and am overweight and unfit. The first time worried me but was fine. Get there early, tuck yourself at the back but somewhere you can see the instructor and just do what you can with light weights for the first session. Tell the instructor it’s your first time and let them know if you have any injuries. You will probably need a mat, a step, a bar and some plates with some clamps to hold the weights on.
No One will be interested in you, so just enjoy it!

TheStirrer · 09/03/2026 15:23

Baggy clothing will be fine as long as it doesn’t get in the way of squatting, lunging or lifting!

That’s good! It will be a free PT session.

They will probably be glad to see you and help someone who is making a positive change in their life. This is what their job is about!

NutButterOnToast · 09/03/2026 15:37

Learn to lift is more like a PT showing you how to lift with good technique and helping you learn about few of the different types of weights and give you a bit of confidence on what to do.

If it's just you that will be great - free personal training.

Well done for booking on

gamerchick · 09/03/2026 15:43

If it's a class, go a bit earlier to have a chat with the coach.

Absolutely nobody will give a toss what your body shape is like.

The first time is the hardest. Then that bit is over with.

I went to a weights class once right on Christmas. I was the only one and it was a bit weird but it turned out to be a lot of fun.

Your coach will want you to go back.

mustwashmycurtains · 09/03/2026 15:54

The learn to lift is really just to tick their insurance box so that you don’t hurt yourself.

Get their advice on the exercises YOU think you will actually do and focus on those. That way you will get something useful out of it. Try to leave with a 20 minute workout plan you will actually do solo. Maybe take photos of their form on your phone to remember the moves

and please don’t feel nervous. The teacher will just as likely be an awkward 25 year old boy who is also nervous.

And please don’t worry, Pure Gym is not all super fit gym bros - it’s very wide ranging :-)

Scaredycat259 · 09/03/2026 16:23

Learn to lift as far as i know is just teaching you lifting techniques and form etc.
Ive never been to that class but I do Pump, circuits, GLC and lift, there's always a friendly atmosphere.

WensleydaleCrumbs · 09/03/2026 16:49

@Scaredycat259can I ask what the difference is between a pump and lift class at Pure Gym? Ours has recently introduced lift and I’m booked on tomorrow! Is it like Bodytone?

Breadcat24 · 09/03/2026 16:59

Hi
Been going to pure gym for ages.
Wear what you like (decent shoes) no one cares. Range of people of size age and fitness
Tell them if you have an injury
Unlike what some are posting her Lift is a fitness class - not learning how to lift weights.
Weight Training Classes Near Me - Try PureGym’s New LIFT Class | PureGym
It uses plates for the weights- make sure you take a range from the rack as you may only want 2.5 kg for a lateral arm raise, but might be able to do more for a row. Try to use the heaviest weight you can you can drop down
Form is very important
but DO NOT take photos as some one upthread recommended - not allowed in classes quite rightly
If you are worried about form book a taster session with one of the PTs

@WensleydaleCrumbs @Scaredycat259 Lift the class in studio is pretty much a new name for bodytone- pump without the bar
Different to learn to lift is usually in functional area and different

Breadcat24 · 09/03/2026 17:09

Sorry- I stand corrected - you are doing learn to lift!!
A lot of the PTs in my gym do a taster session. Good to make sure you do not hurt yourself
