To find cheaper ways of running a company pertaining to pension

No judgement please - just trying to figure out most cost effective way of running things.

If you are running a company and most employees are not staying in UK for more than a few years due to nature of the work, is it more sensible to skip pension auto-enrolment?

Cost per employee £2000 for pension vs £400 for fine (if fined). Employees are not likely to even pursue it as will be abroad in decades from now. Employees then don't have to have deductions so win-win.

Am I missing something or is this the way to go for this use case?

No it's illegal I think not to offer it. How can you know for certain when they'll leave. They're still entitled to a basic workplace pension if they work for a legit UK company and pay UK tax.

Merryoldgoat · 09/03/2026 11:29

It’s illegal to skip auto enrolling your staff. Is this a joke?

TimeZonedOut · 09/03/2026 11:34

Have you got your £2k cost correct? I thought it was 3% contribution which on min wage is around £660 per year.

EightSteps · 09/03/2026 11:36

Why would you assume your employees won't want to claim this pension in the future?

HoskinsChoice · 09/03/2026 11:42

There is not info here but it appears that you are using cheap foreign labour, dumping them and not paying them properly in the meantime. Is that right?

MidnightPatrol · 09/03/2026 11:43

Why wouldn’t they pursue it in future?

I have access to my autoenrolment pension via a pension providers platform and manage it myself.

It’s not like it’s hidden from view like the state pension.

allmycats · 09/03/2026 11:45

You should offer the pension and they can then make a decision relevant to their situation. Do you try to cut corners in other ways too ? How are your Health and Safety requirements met and the paperwork pertaining to it. ?

You don't get fined instead of owing the money to employees - it's both.

Also your numbers are wrong. And you're admitting to a fraud on social media. You really need some advice!

I haven't actually even opened a company, so no.

Unfortunately I have been on the receiving end of this. There are no consequences, if that is the answer to your question.

There are consequences to some extent. There's spending the rest of your life looking over your shoulder knowing you've committed fraud. There's knowing that you have willingly ripped off good people who worked for you. And there's knowing you are a c**t of monumental proportions. If the OP @Watdidusay is happy to live her life like that then possibly not. The fact that she's even thinking this signifies that she is already morally bankrupt. Karma often finds you though...

Unfortunately my old employer has been doing this for 6 years now, along with much worse ways of hurting staff, and despite numerous reports to all services there are no consequences. So i don't really believe in karma anymore. They're off on exotic holidays and posting them on social media. And yes, people like this are often happy with moral bankruptcy so are unaffected by guilt.

TunnocksOrDeath · 09/03/2026 16:30

Apart from being illegal, what on earth would make you think that they wont need this money, and won't come looking for it?
I have a retired friend who worked for some years in Germany - he is absolutely reliant on his German pension to top-up his British pension.

MarkMenziesFakeMugger · 09/03/2026 21:03

@Watdidusay Did you really just ask if it was more sensible to defraud employees of pension or….
