To ask if anyone has taken Naproxen?

thewaylifegoes · 09/03/2026 07:25

I’m posting here for traffic, and I’ll admit right now I’ve got some health anxiety.

I have just returned from a ski trip where I have unfortunately torn some ligaments in my ankle. I’m on a waiting list to be assessed to see if I need surgery, or whether it can heal naturally. In the meantime, my GP had prescribed naproxen and omeprazole for me.

But I am totally confused. The packet of the naproxen says to take two a day. The omeprazole says one tablet a day, but during our consultation the GP said to take an omeprazole with each naproxen I take. I’m also aware that omeprazole can have some bad long term side effects, so I just feel a little confused.

I’ve held off taking them for a good few days now because of this but I’m in so much pain that I need to take one. My question being - how?!

Best bet is ring your pharmacy to clarify. Sorry you're in so much pain.

NormasArse · 09/03/2026 07:27

You take the omeprazole once a day. I take mine with the first naproxen in the morning.

ChocolateMagnum · 09/03/2026 07:27

Do what the prescription says. You could speak to a pharmacist this morning to clarify and/or go back to your GP. Don't ask randoms on the internet for advice on your medical prescription.

randomchap · 09/03/2026 07:28

I took one omeprazole on the morning with breakfast and a naproxen, followed by just naproxen at dinner time.

Check with your pharmacist though

WonderingWanda · 09/03/2026 07:28

I agree ring the pharmacy to clarify, and for now just take one of the meds to start with to see if that's enough on it's own, or to at least take the edge off the pain. I've had Naproxen which has been effective.

Serencwtch · 09/03/2026 07:28

Take the Omeprazole on an empty stomach. Then wait at least half an hour & take the first naproxen with some food.

The second naproxen can be taken 8 hours later with food.

The Omeprazole lasts for 24 hours so you don't need one with every dose of naproxen

thewaylifegoes · 09/03/2026 07:28

I’ll calm the pharmacy in the morning then. In that case though, I have double the omeprazole to naproxen. I’m really trying to resist taking them because I know that they can have awful side effects but as I’m getting back to daily life (all booted up for work), I’m struggling more and more

Why did you get prescribed the omeprazole? Do you have existing heartburn issues. I have taken naproxen in the past but was not prescribed omeprazole. I would take the naproxen morning and evening and the omeprazole in the morning.

AmandaHoldensLips · 09/03/2026 07:31

Naproxen is very effective. The omeprazole is to protect your stomach lining, which is usually taken once per day.

NormasArse · 09/03/2026 07:31

You don’t double the omeprazole!

HelpMeGetThrough · 09/03/2026 07:32

1 omeprazole with the first naproxen and then take the second naproxen on its own.

You’ll be glad when you take them, it’ll certainly reduce the pain. I’m not able to take them anymore due to another drug I’m on, but when I could, they did the job and I had no problems at all.

Nope, no existing issues. The doctor said it was standard to prescribe together to prevent stomach issues. I think it’s because on the days I’m not taking the naproxen, I’m to continue my usual ibuprofen and paracetamol that I was told to take in the hospital in France, and she’s being cautious.

Naproxen is off the shelf in the US. Never taken omeprazole with it.

That’s a completely normal prescription. I take naproxen long term for arthritis (20 ish years so far.) Naproxen twice daily, omeprazole once daily. Neither cause any side effects for me. If you’re concerned speak to a pharmacist but honestly you sound like you are winding yourself up for no reason. You’re taking for an injury so hopefully short term so really no need to panic. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 09/03/2026 07:45

After a recent knee operation I was given the omeprazole to have one, before food, in the morning. Then with food naproxen about an hour later and then one later at night. However, I was violently sick with the first naproxen in the hospital and couldn’t take them again. I had to have co-codamol instead which did the job !

RosesAndHellebores · 09/03/2026 07:47

I've taken naproxen and omeprazole many times over the years.

Naproxen is usually prescribed as a 500mcg tablet (far stronger than ibuprofen at 200mcg). It is very effective and is an anti-inflammatory. Taken twice a day.

Omeprazole is taken once a day and mitigates against the potential hardness on the tummy.

You can take the naproxen without the omeprazole and if yiur tummy gets gripey, add in the omeprazole. You are lucky your GP has prescribed them automatically.

Your GP has prescribed the same quantity of both because they come in standard side packets.

Neither drug is heavy duty, both will help you. I wouldn't hesitate to take them. They will help the pain.

I hope you feel better soon.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 09/03/2026 07:48

Jist to reassure you I took Naproxen with no issues for a few weeks.

Id check with the pharmacy but id do omraz. And Nap. In the AM and Nap in PM
Both with or just after meals

VividDeer · 09/03/2026 07:50

Usually its only one omeprezole a day, unless you are really refluxing?
My naproxen says 1 to 2, so its probably based on if you need more.
I'd try and limit it personally, not easy on the stomach.
Are you taking paracetamol aswell?

It is standard practice to prescribe omeprasole or an equivalent with anti inflammatory medication.
Omeprasole first thing with first dose of naproxen and 2nd dose naproxen 12 hours later.
Am surprised the discomfort hasn’t encouraged you to start pain relief!

Yes exactly same. I also took paracetamol or cocodomol as directed.

I’m holding off a) because of the concerns I had about the omeprazole and b) because I’ve only been given 28 naproxen tablets and I don’t want to use them all up

I haven’t taken naproxen myself, but I totally understand the health anxiety around medications and instructions. When I was dealing with anxiety, I was actually prescribed medical cannabis through LeafEase (leafease.co.uk). It’s been really helpful for managing my anxiety and the constant worrying about health stuff.

For your situation, though, it might be worth double-checking with your GP or pharmacist just to clarify the dosing, especially since the instructions on the packets seem different from what the doctor said. Pharmacists are usually great at explaining exactly how to take medications together.

Any nsaid can cause stomach issues if you are taking long term ibuprofen it’s best to take an inhibitor like omerprozle (sp) . Just take one a day as long as you are on daily ibuprofen or naproxen

When I was prescribed naproxen I was told never to take it with ibuprofen due to them both being in the nsaid category of pain relief and naproxen being basically a stronger version of ibuprofen. Never heard of omeprazole before, they usually say to have nsaids with food to protect the stomach lining and prevent ulcers.
