Toddlers new trainers

Barbiegirl123 · 07/03/2026 16:35

My OH bought our 3 year old son new white trainers to replace his current pair which are completely battered. The current pair, although extremely worn, are the only pair of trainers our son will wear and refuses point blank to wear any of his others so this morning when I was getting him ready I asked him if he wanted to wear the new pair to which he agreed. I took him to the shops and then collected my OH to take the dog for a walk in the park.

I had said to my son that daddy would be so happy to see him wearing his new shoes however this was indeed not the case. When my OH saw our son wearing the new trainers he was absolutely fuming. He said it was the stupidest thing ever putting on brand new white trainers to go and get muddy in the park.

I don’t see the issue considering my son is 3 years old and our usual activities consist of going to the park or soft play, sometimes walk around shops and then my son goes to nursery/creche during the week so it is not as though we go to particularly nice places or go out for nice meals regularly that he needs to keep the trainers good for.

So AIBU or is my OH?

When does your OH think toddlers wear their shoes 🤔

Who has 'good' trainers for a 3 year old 😂

vincettenoir · 07/03/2026 16:38

Yeah, there’s no problem here.

Sprogonthetyne · 07/03/2026 16:42

The poor decision way buying white trainers if you want them to stay white. Wherever you go, a 3yo is going to find mud to walk through.

BreakingBroken · 07/03/2026 16:42

Regardless of color they will get dirty and need washing. Proper size fit and ability to clean my priority.

HiFalutinFolDeRols · 07/03/2026 16:43

Your OH is an idiot, sorry.

What does he think he was buying the trainers for Confused

ToKittyornottoKitty · 07/03/2026 16:53

Why not just buy wellies for the muddy park? The shoes are obviously going to get dirty and he’s being silly. But personally I’d get suitable wellies for the park or use old trainers if it’s particularly muddy. I also wouldn’t buy white trainers for a toddler personally

BarbiesDreamHome · 07/03/2026 17:40

They're a replacement, right?

So when did DH say he bought them with the full expectation that DS wouldn't be doing BAU activities?

He didn't, did he?

He just staffed £££ on "cool" trainers because that's important to him and didn't think about your son actually wearing them.

Pillock.

I'd agree if it was a day at the park or other outside venue, but it sound more like the dog walk was just an add on activity after shopping. If mine wore wellies every day we might go to the playground, it's all they'd ever were, as we'll almost always call in somewhere on the way to or from wherever we're going.

Thesnailonthewhale · 08/03/2026 08:13

Doesn't DS have any wellies?

goz · 08/03/2026 08:15

I don’t think either of you are, DH thought he was buying DS a nice/special pair of shoes and you thought it was replacing the ones he had.
My 2 & 4 year old have more than 1 singular pair of shoes and I wouldn’t want their nicer ones to be worn on a muddy dog walk.

I’d probably be slightly miffed if I was the one who bought the new shoes and DH immediately put them on for what he knew would be a messy outing.

Boymum2104 · 08/03/2026 08:17

I don’t expect trainers to kept prestine with my toddlers at all but no I wouldn’t put them in them for a muddy park it would be an old pair or wellies personally

MidnightPatrol · 08/03/2026 08:17

I can see why he’d be annoyed if they’re filthy after the first wear.

I have ‘playing outside in the dirt’ shoes (not wellies but waterproof sturdy things) which they wear in the park etc - but also ‘decent trainers’, which I like to stay fairly clean so they can be worn inside without it being an issue.

I would however not buy my toddler white shoes - as they’ll get trashed regardless.

Assistledoggo · 08/03/2026 08:18

I would have worn wellies for going to the park.

Sirzy · 08/03/2026 08:18

so the shop and the park/dog walk where two separate activities? I would have changed into wellies before going on the dog walk then.

Cryingatthegym · 08/03/2026 08:21

Buying a toddler white trainers is a bit silly but my two have 'nice' trainers and 'messy' trainers depending on where we're going and what we're doing - but for a trip to the muddy park I wouldn't put them in either, I'd put them in wellies!

I don’t think it sounds like an unexpected add on, dog walking is always the plan with a dog. In winter when it’s muddy and the park is very likely mine would have just worn wellies anyway, it’s not like they’re a disadvantage over trainers for a toddler. Different things for different families though, there’s no right or wrong here

Barbiegirl123 · 09/03/2026 18:56

Thanks for all your responses - the main point is that my son is extremely fussy with his shoes and will only wear this 1 specific pair of white trainers no matter the occasion. These were a replacement to the beat up ones. So of course wellies are a great idea but not a solution for us while he is in this phase of fussiness.

The trainers are leather and easily cleaned and they did not get ruined at the park.

Also to clarify my OH bought them with our joint money so not a personal expense!
