To take a less exciting job for more stability

So to start i currently love my job. Its varied, I have a fab team and despite it being constantly busy (probably need another person to help at times which isn't going to happen) I do genuinely love what i do.

However, when compared to other comparable roles outside of the company (or even in other departments at my company) I am under paid by about £5k-10k. I have addressed this a few times and have always been told its under review and nothing happens.

The only thing about my job is that it sometimes conflicts with DH work pattern. He work sets shifts usually so 3 out 4 weeks everything is fine. He then has a week on the 4th week where he is on call. So could be called at anytime of the day or night and have to leave at short notice. This obviously means that I cannot so anything that week, no travel with work, all school runs fall to me etc. Even if there are events that I need to attend for my role, I can't attend them during this week, which generally work have been ok with so far, but i'm getting frustrated at always being the team member who can't go. This is causing a lot of tension at as DH just shrugs his shoulders and says it is what it and there's no compromise. This isn't the only thing we argue about but that's a whole different thread.

A job in a different department has come up. Very similar to what I do technically, but doesn't sound as exciting and doesn't have the travel i currently do involved. However is possibly around £7k more than my current salary

I have been encouraged to apply (I know the hirg manager) and have been told I am on of the stronger candidates who has applies (tho appreciated they could just be saying that)

Obviously I have to interview etc, but if I were to be successful, would I be silly for holding onto my current role i love but is causing conflict at home for something I don't love but is easier.

Children are 10 and 6

Would it be possible to go back to the job your doing if you try the new job and decide it’s not for you?

It sounds like the company are finding a solution to your request for a better salary. Also it would solve the problem of you being unable to travel at various times. Maybe go for it and do for a few years & before you know it you will have both kids a bit older & you can start working away again. The time really does fly past.

Would make things a lot easier childcare wise so yes i’d probably apply.

I would apply for the new role with the additional salary. This could be the incentive for your current line manager to increase your salary and if not, I would walk and try something different. It seems that whilst you love your current team, your current line manager is happy for you to remain doing what you are doing and not appreciating your worth and fobbing you off with empty promises.

The new job sounds better

I’d probably apply yes. Use it as the basis for requesting a pay rise if you decide you really want to stay, but to do that you’re going to have to be prepared to walk. It sounds like a good progression tbh.
