To want to move because of unhygienic neighbour?

love3bake · 06/03/2026 10:51

I really want to move because of these issues with my neighbour.

She often has overflowing bins (both recycle and waste bins) which often blow into my garden/ driveway.

Myself and other neighbours have addressed this to her when her rubbish has blown onto our properties.
It's not a one off it's all the time. Every week.

She has a bird feeder next to my window which attracts magpies, crows etc and I am pretty sure that this is attracting vermin.

She has multiple cats which often roam into my garden doing their business.

Her kids also cause issues, they are loud, jump on cars, slamming doors, throwing footballs at windows and doors.

The weekends they are with their dad is amazing.
Peace and quiet. It's bliss.

AIBh to want to move?

Have you spoken to environmental health?

love3bake · 06/03/2026 10:56

@Bigtreeesss- Hi no I haven't. Would they be able to help?

OP posts:
DameOfThrones · 06/03/2026 10:57

Why are you asking?

Did someone tell you that you might be unreasonable??

BillieWiper · 06/03/2026 10:57

The kids will grow up and hopefully leave. I wouldn't want to leave over neighbours bins and a bird feeder. As for cats I have them too so couldn't say much about that.

PandoraSocks · 06/03/2026 10:57

Why would anyone think YABU? I sincerely hope there isn't going to be a drip-feed.

Be careful. If you own your property, the minute you complain it becomes and official neighbour dispute which you have to declare when selling.

love3bake · 06/03/2026 11:03

Hi no I rent from the council as does my neighbour.

Well, moving is extreme.

But regarding the waste, have any of you/neighbours got space in your bins for her excess recycling/waste? If you were kind to her like that, it might just make her see you more favourably and sort the other issues.

regarding the waste in particular, ok so her waste overflows and you’ve told her to address it. How were you expecting her to address it if she has too much waste for her containers? Yes I get reduce reuse recycle but if she is in a chaotic situation, that just isnt goign to happen.

DameOfThrones · 06/03/2026 11:07

The pros are obvious here but what are the cons?

Why do you think moving might be unreasonable?

Would you have to send your DC to a different school or something?

TheWildZebra · 06/03/2026 11:07

YANBU about the bins - that’s inconsiderate and environmental health might be able to help with that.

YABU about the bird feeder and the cats. Wouldn’t the cats eat the vermin anyway, if the feeder is attracting them? Have you had any rats in your property?

daotaomao · 06/03/2026 11:07

what is wrong with magpies and crows? amazing birds!

love3bake · 06/03/2026 11:08

None of us have space in our bins for her rubbish.

The council does have a service where you book a slot to take any excess rubbish down to the waste site which the council recommends when there is excess rubbish.

You don't think it's unreasonable to be upset or annoyed that you neighbours cats are shitting in your garden? And it's ok to attract vermin as long as you provide acat to get rid of them?

love3bake · 06/03/2026 11:12

The droppings of the birds are an issue as they are all over by garden and driveway.

I have babies so no moving school wouldn't be an issue.

I have had motion detected by my CCTV late at night which could be vermin but I'm not 100% as it could also be a hedgehog.

Have you complained to the council? That would be a good starting point.

So what actually is the potential issue regarding moving?

DameOfThrones · 06/03/2026 11:16

You can ask your council about an exchange.

catipuss · 06/03/2026 11:24

If it annoys you that much move if you can. We moved partly because of neighbours, we had three different neighbours over several years and each lot were worse than the last, the last lot seemed to spend most of the day screaming at each other and their kids. We bought detached the next time, no more noisy neighbours on shared walls, bliss.

Because many people wouldn't move house over such things. It's a pretty massive upheaval to put yourself through.

Yabu. If she's a single mum with dcs I quite understand she doesn't have a lot of time for going to the tip. I don't either. Offering to help her is much more likely to have a positive outcome.

Having a bird feeder is not unusual, the same as owning cats. Anywhere you move will probably have the same. Bird poo happens anywhere there are trees or telephone wires so any place you move to.

She has dcs who make noise - again completely normal.

If she has cats, she's unlikely to attract rats or mice. More likely to be hedgehogs, cats, foxes etc.

The only things I'd worry about is damage to cars. I'd chat to her about it. Get her on your side.

MonsterasEverywhere · 06/03/2026 11:28

There is no guarantee that you would get "better" neighbours if you moved.

catipuss · 06/03/2026 11:30

BillieWiper · 06/03/2026 11:24

Because many people wouldn't move house over such things. It's a pretty massive upheaval to put yourself through.

Not for only that reason, but it's like a dripping tap if there is continual annoyance spoiling your enjoyment of your home, so it may bring your plans forward if it was a future plan.

Hi no I rent from the council as does my neighbour.

Well unless you council has excess social housing its not that simple as just wanting to move.

Exchanges mean there doesn't have to be excess social housing, otherwise no-one could ever move.

Suggest she gets wheelie bins and just puts out the bagged rubbish/recycling from the wheelie bins the night before collection. This is what we do, except for card, that gets squashed into the open tub but doesn’t seem to fly about.
