I am really narked about the fact they always display the Star newspaper, complete with busty girl in thong ready to be rear-mounted, at toddler eye height in my local Smiths.

I am worked up enough to email and complain, say it should be on top shelf away from kiddies view, but a couple of the girls on my post-natal group think I am being really silly.

They basically said that nudity was a natural thing and I was probably jealous of their figures .

So, AIBU to want complain? And, is there any point in doing so?

If I am BU, any suggestions on what to say to my DD when she asks "mummy why hasn't that lady got any clothes on?"

I once got v v v v v stroppy in Smiths after someone dared to mention the fact i was bf-ing ds (in a sling) and i just looked over at the porn red top tabloids pointedly and raised an eyebrow (before launching into rant mode )

I used to buy the Star, as they were one of the first papers to report accurately what was happening on the war in Iraq! So although the Star buying-Guardian reading demographic is small, it does exist!

I don't think you are being unreasonable, I feel it is soft porn and should not be for a toddlers eyes

lionheart · 17/06/2008 18:16

... and people always mention jealousy whenever issues like this come up (see Jordan threads).

Good for you, ChukkyPig! It annoys me, to0. And tSD's post makes me feel even crosser.

WorzselMummage · 17/06/2008 18:21

I can vividly remember reading on the front of these papers about a women being penetrated with a stick and being completly baffled, it must have been the star or somthing, i must only have been about 10.

yanbu, atall !

Update! Response from WH Smith:

Dear Chukky

Thank you for your email, concerning the front cover of the Daily Star newspaper.

I am sorry, for any offence caused to you, WHSmith as a company do not censure the front page of any newspaper, however, I have forward your comments to the relevant department for them to consider if anything can be done.

If I can help you in any other way, please contact me.

Kind regards

Customer Service Coordinator

Don't really know what to say to that! It was worth a try though. Maybe I'll ask to be told what the response from the "relevant department" is.

Oh dear god. Did they really write 'censure'? When they meant (presumably?) censor?

ChukkyPig · 19/06/2008 20:05

They have also "forward" my comments. Excellent!

Shall I give up now? Maybe I should stop going to smiths... That will reduce my list of things to do to get me and the sprog out the house quite drastically though!!
