Waking up overnight DRENCHED in sweat

Posting here in case anyone else has had this and knows what it is!

ive been struggling with really bad night sweats recently. All my life I’ve naturally been a cold person but for a few months now I’ve been feeling absolutely boiling hot at night. It usually starts about midnight or so, feels like I’m unbelievably hot and the sweat literally soaks my pjs and bedsheets and I’m dripping wet with it. If I’m up late then I’ll feel it start but if I’m in bed early then it’ll wake me up during the night when it starts . I’ve tried light bedding, no bedding, light pjs, no pjs, windows open (my bed is literally right beside it). I live in northern Scotland where it’s been baltic recently and my car is iced up every morning but I’m still waking up roasting. Heating thermostat is set to 15 overnight but I’ve tried even lower and it makes no difference. My room isn’t particularly warm or a heat trap, I’ve never had this issue before and I’m completely fine during the day. Does anyone know wtf this is and what I can do to stop it? Frankly I’m fed up having to wash my hair in the morning because it’s wet with sweat from during the night

i went to the gp who checked my thyroid and hormones and it was all normal. I even went privately for amother full hormone check so I could make sure the levels were normal and they were all completely fine. I’ve had a few full blood tests recently (for a completely separate thing) and I remember on once instance the doctor said my white blood cells were high, I think it was 15.5? Then another doctor said whilst it’s high it doesn’t matter because they’ve seen that for me in my other recent blood tests so that’s normal for me. Otherwise it was all fine

I’m just at a loss for what it is! I’m not menopausal, I’m 28, female, I’m not stressed, I exercise regularly and don’t drink or take drugs. Just at a bit of a loss! The doctor said not to worry about it and it’s just one of those things but it’s having a big impact on me

on occasion in the past yes

Any weight changes? With a high white cell count I’d want further testing to rule out more serious conditions like lymphoma.

Agree with this. I had lymphoma and would wake up absolutely drenched. I Would have to change not only my nightwear but the sheets too and eventually started lying on towels. It’s a very different experience to a hormonal sweat, this is like when you are ill with a horrible virus.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 05/03/2026 18:19

One symptom of kidney cancer is night sweats. It’s a type of cancer often not easily spotted because there are so few symptoms. Night sweats can be a symptom though so I would want more tastings

NinaNina83 · 05/03/2026 18:20

Anything caught early is more treatable than when it’s realised later on. The sooner you have more testing done the better.

This worried me as exactly same symptoms as my mum when she had lymphoma

Crwysmam · 05/03/2026 18:28

Allergy. I am allergic to sulphites in wine. If I have a glass of wine in the evening then I would have severe night sweats. Even half a glass would do it. Other foods trigger it to a certain extent but I haven’t pinned down which.
Instant coffee can trigger it. I rarely drink alcohol and stick to fresh ground coffee. I also try to eat as little ultra processed foods as possible that may contain preservatives.
Some foods are estrogen mimickers may be worth doing a bit of research. Some of us are estrogen sensitive.
Do you have a heart murmur? Endocarditis can present with night sweats.

vickylou78 · 05/03/2026 18:55

I'd go back to GP as I'd be worried about the bleed between periods etc as could be ovarian cysts or similar or early perimenopausal symptoms.

My experience of night sweats is perimenopause related but that started at 40yrs old.

Could you be pregnant?

I too would be asking my GP to rule out more sinister things such as lymphoma. Night sweats are a huge red flag symptom. They should be looking at more than hormones.

Justwingingit2005 · 05/03/2026 19:47

When I went to the drs with a lump in my neck (it wasn't it was a muscle) the first thing the GP said was are you having night sweats.

zzplee · 05/03/2026 17:52

Peri-menopausal night sweats.

This. 100%

falalalaa · 05/03/2026 19:50

Ah of course some people are saying 28 isn’t too young to be peri 😂 only on Mumsnet.

cinnamonrolls3 · 05/03/2026 19:50

Sorry not to drip feed (just didn’t think it was relevant) I’m just a bit worried about going back constantly to the doctor because i think they already have me down as being a bit anxious anyway. I found a new hard lump last year on the end of my collarbone in the middle of my chest on the left side, on the end of the bone itself not a lymph node). The gp wasnt sure what it was, referred me to hospital, they said the x ray was clear and it doesn’t need any treatment, but also don’t know what it is other than some people just have asymmetrical collar bones but Ive never had it before🤷🏼‍♀️it’s not painful so not causing a problem. They’re just not sure what it is or why it suddenly started and grew within a 4 week timeframe last year. It hasn’t gotten any bigger since I had it Xrayed and it’s just the same and it’s not sore at all. But because I was at the doctor with that, and then these symptoms, and also a few other unrelated things from a different condition altogether, I think they definitely have me down as anxious and I’m just worried about adding to that.

It’s so frustrating not knowing but I was sure it would be my hormones but they were all totally fine (which is good obviously, but it means I’m no further forward to fixing the problem)

yeah my b12 was checked and it was totally fine too x

This. 100%

But wouldn’t the hormone blood test have picked up some hormone changes if it were that? I really hope it’s not menopause, I’ve always wanted to have kids some day and thought I had ages ☹️ I don’t want to be menopausal at 28

I get bad night sweats with infections and also if I eat cheese.

months is too long for infections.

cinnamonrolls3 · 05/03/2026 17:59

Nah no foreign travel recently. I’m not stressed or undergoing any life changes right now, I’m so happy apart from this😅 I don’t think I’m perimenopausal plus my hormones were all normal which I’m asssuming wouldn’t be the case if I were perimenopausal? Might be wrong though

Test your estrogen levels, that result will tell you if you’re perimenopausal.

Also are you on any medication? I had night sweats 10 years ago, also no obvious reasons, my doctor increased my antidepressant dose which put a stop to them, until perimenopause started and now HRT patches has stopped them.

Feel for you. Night sweats are horrific.

tillstwo · 05/03/2026 19:58

I’m not sure this really helps but I had the same thing, it started out of nowhere age 34. I had the hormone tests and all came back normal but when I got pregnant both times it stopped so I can only think it’s hormonal

Thanks, no not on any medication and not on any birth control at all, yeah the blood test included oestrogen (I’m 99% sure but I’ll go and double check) and everything was well within normal range x

I am shocked that the doc didn't immediately suspect something with a lump on the collar bone, drenching night sweats and a high WBC. Come on.....

Forget about hormones for a bit and go back and TELL them you are concerned that it could be lymphoma or similar. Demand tests to either rule it in or out. If ruled out then explore other possibilities. I am sorry if I have scared you by saying the above, but it's better to know and get treatment started asap if it proves to be anything other than hormonal.

Go tomorrow if you can and stamp your foot. This is too serious to be fobbed off.

Ah sorry I haven’t explained it well. The lump was last year and at the time I didn’t have any of the night sweats or any symptoms at all, that only started a few months ago. I just went to the doctors because I had found the lump. I only found out about the white blood cells last month although according to what they said it’s been high before? No idea how long for though or how high before. I remember when I was referred for the lump they did bloods at the time and said it was fine and all normal x

I would want to be tested for blood cancers (lymphoma, leukaemia, those sorts), especially with the high wbc. Those are the classic two markers of blood cancers. Don’t be fobbed off with its ‘just perimenopause.’ 🙄

This! My MIL had terrible night sweats for more than 2 years. GP diagnosed depression, anxiety, later-menopause. She had a brain tumour.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 05/03/2026 20:07

I'm diabetic and get horrendous night sweats if my blood sugar drops during the night. Have you asked your GP to check your HbA1C?

myheadsjustmush · 05/03/2026 20:08

A few posters have mentioned Lymphoma.

My DH, who is much older than you, had drenching night sweats - so bad the sheets and pillows were soaking wet through.

To cut a very long story short, he was subsequently diagnosed with an aggressive type of Non Hodgkin Lymphoma. His white blood count was also high.

Please go back to your GP @cinnamonrolls3 and push for further tests - if only to rule out Lymphoma once and for all.

I hope you get this sorted OP. X

Please put this anxiety aside, you are feeling poorly and have legitimate concerns and reasons to consult a doctor. You really aren’t the type of patient they would be concerned is time-wasting. Please see a doctor who can help, you deserve it.

I had this when I had an ovarian cyst. I thought it was because I was in perimenopause but everything became okay after surgery.

My mum had night sweats when she had pneumonia. So it can be caused by infection with or without fever.

Same here ovarian cyst and I was only 26 , one of my friends had one too same symptoms she was 27. I ignored it to start with, because I could manage it & I put it down to stress and life changes ( divorce, house move, new job etc) but after about 6 months my stomach suddenly ballooned and I was beginning to struggle with pain & obviously my clothes weren't fitting me because I looked about 6 months pregnant and then I started passing out as well. One day the pain was so bad it took me all day to get out of bed and walk round the corner to the pay phone so I could ring in sick as I was on night shift. Don't let it get that far OP, go back to Dr & get a second opinion , ask for tests it might be nothing but at least you'll be sure.
