Open surgery for ectopic

Jac2223 · 05/03/2026 10:46

Just wondering has anyone else had open surgery for ruptured ectopic and had a successful pregnancy afterwards, most things I am reading people seem to have had keyhole surgery? Been trying to conceive for 18 months now with no luck and wondering is there a high chance the open surgery has caused pelvic adhesions which have maybe caused issues with my remaining tube/ovaries etc, feeling really worried

I had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy 20 years ago with open surgery. The surgeon said that they had no concerns about me conceiving again as everything looked healthy and the remaining fallopian tube would tend to get stronger as the only one left.

Sure enough I fell pregnant and had a successful pregnancy the following year.

I remember my GP did say that he would fast track things for infertility if we struggled following the op.

Thank you so much for your reply. It's really great to hear a positive outcome especially after open surgery as most threads I am seeing have been positive stories after keyhole surgery. So glad you got pregnant with no problems the following year. I take hope from hearing your story and hopefully it will happen at some stage. Thanks again for replying

Wishing you the best of luck. I would reach out to your GP if you are at all concerned.

Jac2223 · 05/03/2026 16:16

Thank you very much. They did say after surgery the other tube looked healthy so no need to repair other tube best to take it away, but I was concerned that the scar tissue was causing me trouble. I will reach out to gp for some advice.

if it takes you more than 1 year to get pregnant or 6 months to get pregnant after year 35, then that's definition of infertility.
I would ask for infertility support.

I will do thank you, I'm age 29, do you know if the gp does a referral to gynaecology or would it be a fertility clinic, I just know how long some of the wait times are at the moment

Hi, I had open surgery for ruptured ectopic then had successful pregnancy around 18 months later followed by another very closely so had a 21 month gap between births. Wishing you the best of luck

Hi thank you so much, I am so sorry to hear of your ruptured ectopic. That's great that you have had 2 successful pregnancies since, wonderful to hear of successful pregnancies after open surgery from ectopic. I've just been worried the open surgery had caused more damage as it's a major operation but I'm probably just thinking worst case senario. It gives me some hope hearing positive stories and some hope that the day will come. So happy all worked out for you after the ectopic as it it such a terrible experience.

Sorry to hear what happened to you.

At your young age having TTC for 18 months you need a referral to a fertility clinic to test both of you. Your fertility issues could be caused by the surgery, by something unrelated, there may be male factor infertility at play or a combination of some of these.

Good luck, I would make an appointment soon. If NHS be prepared that it can take a long time.

I had open surgery for ruptured ectopic in November (14 years ago) DS was born the following December. As PP said I would start looking at referrals now given the waiting times. Wishing you the best of luck.

Thank you. I will call the gp and ask for a referral, I was considering paying privately just to get the hsg test done just to see if there is a problem with the tube as I do think it could be a good few years waiting on a referral through NHS, although as you said could be something unrelated but will not know until I'm referred for testing, thanks for the reply

@Jac2223
Sorry to hear what you're going through.
I had emergency surgery at 42 after a ruptured ectopic was discovered, but surgery was keyhole. I didn't have another pregnancy after that so can't offer any advice around this, but just wanted to say I hope all goes well for you.💐

Thank you. Sorry to hear you also had a ruptured ectopic, it seems reassuring to see a number of people on here have conceived after open surgery from ectopic, great that you had your DS the following December, always lovely to hear of a successful pregnancy after ectopic. I will contact GP as NHS waiting times are extremely long, thanks for the reply, it gives me hope

Hi, I am very sorry to hear of your ectopic. It is such a tough time. They tried to do keyhole but had to revert to open surgery, I think there was alot of internal bleeding so they needed to get in as quickly as possible, it is a traumatic experience. Thank you very much for your well wishes.

@Jac2223 Thank you. I didn't even know I was pregnant until I collapsed so found out I was pregnant and then being rushed into the operating theatre all within the same day 😢
It really is a very frightening experience.
Wishing you all the very best for the future x

Skippydoodle · 06/03/2026 08:53

I had open surgery after a rupture too, I was 20 at the time and was of the mindset that I didn’t ever want children. My tube was also repaired during the operation (I had asked them to remove it ). By age 30, I decided to try for a baby, it took 18 months to get pregnant. I wish you all the best, I’m sure it will happen for you too x

So scary. That is exactly what happened to me, I didn't know I was pregnant, that night I started taking cramps within a half an hour I collapsed and decided to go to bed to see how the pain went but by the next morning it was excruciating, my fault for not going to hospital right away. Thanks so much x

So sorry to hear you had an ectopic. It is very reassuring to hear of other people who have gone on to have successful pregnancies after open surgery with ectopic. So glad to hear you were able to get pregnant with no issues. They took away my tube because they said the other looked healthy at the time of the surgery. Yes I am hoping it will happen for me at some stage, thank you for your well wishes x
