Is it normal to get a sore, heavy feeling in vagina when on period?

I get a lot of pain in my vagina when I’m on my period. I have done for years and it seems to be associated with standing/walking around. I don’t always get it, but it does happen fairly regularly. There will be months where it doesn’t happen, but I’m just unsure if this is normal?

I thought it was linked to me wearing tampons, but I recently realised the pain is still there when I’m not using a tampon. Does anyone else experience this?

I did but I have endo

Ponderingwindow · 04/03/2026 23:13

i always have this. It is worse if I don’t use a tampon. I can feel the pressure of the flow coming out otherwise and it hurts.

CustardwithBanana · 04/03/2026 23:14

It’s literally right down where a tampon would sit. Did you find out if this was lined to your ends?

i did but have adenomyosis and endo

Saracen · 04/03/2026 23:17

I have the discomfort you describe, but it's pretty mild for me. I hardly notice it compared with the much worse muscle cramping pain.

SusanChurchouse · 04/03/2026 23:21

It can be to do with your pelvic floor muscles becoming weaker during your period and not supporting you as well, giving a ‘heavy’ feeling. Pelvic floor exercises may help.

FamingolosForDays · 04/03/2026 23:28

Yes, I do, always have done.

PeonyBulb · 04/03/2026 23:30

No it is not normal

It can be linked to prolapse.

ShinyBeans · 05/03/2026 00:15

Yes I have this. Assumed it was normal. It's not painful exactly, just a heaviness and tender.

I used to get this (post menopause now) and I didn’t have any gynae problems, it was just the weight of blood backing up I think, as during peri- menopause when my periods got heavier, it was worse.

It is normal. Ive had this since I was a teen and have known many friends refer to this too.

It’s totally normal. Lots of women get it.

I’ve had it since I first started my periods as a kid.

I don’t have endometriosis or anything like that.

7238SM · 05/03/2026 00:39

Sorry but no- I don't have that feeling at all and never have. Late 40's now and still regular periods. The only time I feel a heavy/noticeable sensation is when the tampon isn't in far enough.

Have you had any scans, laparoscopy etc as yet?

PennyLongLegs · 05/03/2026 01:46

I get this every period, it’s getting much worse as I get older. I never used to use a pad, I’ve always been in a tampon girl through and through, But in the last five years, I can’t be using tampons anymore because it’s just so heavy and painful down there. I guess it’s swelling? In any case, I’ve switched fully over to pads.

WearyAuldWumman · 05/03/2026 01:56

I did. Also had endo.

CakeMeHomeIveSeenEnough · 05/03/2026 03:42

That sounds familiar. I think I've had it a few times through the years, though not every month and not in a long time. I've also had other period-related symptoms that come and go, such as soreness in my thighs and the ever-delightful javelin arse (as I think it's referred to on MN). No diagnosed problems to link any of these symptoms to.

FloofBunny · 05/03/2026 03:51

I'm not sure it's a good idea to reply to posts like this.

whereisitnow · 05/03/2026 03:52

I used to have this (before the menopause). I don’t think it’s unusual. I don’t have endometriosis

Sartre · 05/03/2026 06:14

Yep I’ve also always had this and I sometimes get leg pain too. No endo and I mean I could have a prolapse and be unaware but it’s happened since I was a teen so doubt it’s that.

Second. Same. The joys of being a woman!

828Pax · 05/03/2026 06:17

My friend always says she gets this and I'd never had it until last month!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 05/03/2026 06:19

It’s totally normal. Never had any gynae problems and am in menopause now. But back in the day I’d refer to it as menstrual crutch pressure.

blondeascustard · 05/03/2026 06:22

Yes I do, usually on say 2-3 of the period.

it is the exact same feeling for me as 7cm dilated whilst giving birth, between contractions (three separate times I’ve had that confirmed). Presumably I’m not 7cm dilated on my period but something odd is happening up there. I also find it uncomfortable to sit on a hard surface at that point.

Squidgemoon · 05/03/2026 06:22

Yes ever since I started - usually only on day 1/2 when it’s heaviest. I also wonder if it’d to do with flow because my periods have got much lighter in the last few years and I don't get it as badly anymore,
