aibu to think it’s a permanent solution to being hair free?

I’ve been quoted £129 per session for both full legs. Before I commit I want to hear if it’s worth it and long term?

I’ve had it and best thing I ever did for my legs! If you’re in the north of England then I can recommend somewhere brilliant and very reasonable cost-wise

Catza · 04/03/2026 15:35

It's not permanent. They actually banned calling it permanent hair removal and it is now referred to as permanent hair reduction. And that's definitely been my experience in several areas. I've been able to cut shaving down to once a week on my legs and bikini line and about once a month on my underarms which is already a miracle.
You are supposed to top it up every couple of years. I never bothered and yes, hair growth increased over time but never went back to pre-treatment levels.

It has been incredible on my legs and underarms less so on bikini and face

ladyofshertonabbas · 04/03/2026 15:54

It worked for me, did it about 11 years ago. Legs have hardly any hair, bikini area it started to grow back sparsely after about 7 years, which is what they said would happen. Underarm hair- probably got about ten on each armpit. It changed my life, being hairy ruined my confidence.

Abd80 · 04/03/2026 15:56

Yep. So worth it.

Katiesaidthat · 04/03/2026 15:59

Massively worth it. I do a check once a year before the beach season. There may be a few ultra thin sparse hairs, that´s it.

Is it painful? I have my bikini waxed every 6 weeks, always wonder if it would be less painful/more cost effective to just get laser.

If it works I think it’s definitely more cost effective!

Also they do say it only really works if you have dark, coarse hairs.

I don’t have dark coarse hairs - fine mid brown - has worked well. But yes it hurts as it progresses (during not after) and you are never free of it as always needs the odd top up. But I’m very glad I invested the time and money.

ItsmeMargo · 04/03/2026 16:06

I used one of those Home IPL devices: used it regularly for a couple of months, and haven’t had to shave my legs for over 10 years. It was definitely permanent in my case! I also did my underarms, which weren’t as successful, Although it did reduce the hair massively. Bought another machine last year, and after using it a few times, the hair has pretty much stopped growing. I’ve also tried on my ‘tache: Great results so far. I’ve got dark brown hair and pale skin. Not painful.

CandyflossKing · 04/03/2026 17:04

Not permanent for me although a lot better than it was before.

Buy your own Phillips device. Works out much cheaper over all and you can use it everywhere on your body.

I get that but the machine in the salon uses ipl and something else which is more effective
