Dating scan

Hello,
I self referred to my local epu for a dating scan as I have no period (breastfeeding) and my midwife appointment is in 3 weeks time.
Do you think I have any chances or being accepted?

It wasn't the 12 week scan where you find out edd, screenings etc.

She was invited in for an internal scan to check viability. She, like me, had no clue about how far along she is. They were thinking around six weeks. So that was a surprise.

The only thing about this which irks me is I had to wait for three days whilst bleeding and 14 weeks pregnant to get an ultrasound at my EPU because there were no slots. If these were taken up by people without concerns just wanting to date their pregnancies earlier than their 12 week scan then that is a bit upsetting.

It says in her post it was a scan to check for
viability. So it will have been an epu scan

Yep but she also said it was a dating scan so it’s a bit unclear why a dating scan would happen in the EPU.

she corrected that and said it was an early viability scan. What difference does it make anyway?

Well if OP is under the illusion that the EPU does dating scans, then her using that route to get the 12 week scan early makes sense and as PP said, suggests that people use the EPU for unnecessary reasons, just to avoid paying for a private scan.

So is it my fault the NHS is in shambles?

Not you, personally, but tbh, yes, it’s partly the fault of people like you mis-using it.

Angelyoga · 06/03/2026 08:51

I thought it is the systemic overexploitation of medical personnel and budgetary cuts from hhe gov but OK, let's say its me.

So, how should I go about my concern. I feel I am close to ten weeks pregnant. I am given a 12 week scan for end of April, so around sixteen weeks gestation.
Should I just go with the flow?

Also, since we are already paying NI contributions why should we also pay private?

I'm a bit confused by all the rage here.

OP, so long as you have been totally honest with the EPU it is up to them if they see you. Since they are happy to, that's fine.
Obviously if you've exaggerated or invented symptoms or something that's outrageous, but you haven't mentioned that so I assume you haven't.

Quite frankly I have no issue with getting yourself seen through white lies. They run for efficiency, efficiency isn't your priority. I'm all for women advocating for their own care over and above what the NHS want to provide. I'm all for all people advocating for themselves and their relatives in hospital. When my great nana was dying in great pain, if we hadn't have harassed and advocated as strongly she would have died in uncontrolled pain, but becuase her family wouldn't accept "the NHS is struggling as it is" a morphine pump was brought from another hospital so she could die comfortably.

So nah, advocate for yourself and get the care you feel you need. They can do a simple blood test to see how much hcg is in your system to see if you're further along than you think. But they can also scan. My SIL had irregular periods and they scanned her to make sure they knew when to do the 12 week. It's important, you don't want to miss it.

The NHS is not in a state becuase people use it. It is in a state becuase the rich and powerful and our government are not appropriately funding it and and taking resources from it to line their own pockets. The problem is not at the point of use, it is at the highest ranks of the NHS and above. Rich selfish people.

FYI the cost of living crisis isn't becuase of people on benefits or immigrants. It's because of GREEDY RICH AND POWERFUL PEOPLE EXPLOITING YOU.

They tell you it's the people below you or beside you that's the problem so you don't look up and see them shitting on you.

If you’ve been infrequently having sex, you must have some idea of how far along you are?

I don’t think that’s fair. She called the EPU, they asked her a series of questions, and they decided she met the criteria for an appointment.
If you think those criteria are wrong, that isn’t OP’s fault.

Well yeah that’s kind of the point… she said she feels she closer to 10 weeks so the scan at the end of April would put her at 16 weeks.
