Making nappy caddy baby gifts, good idea or waste of time?

Hi!
As a fairly new mum I was thinking today how handy my nappy caddy is. Obviously it's a very simple thing but I like how it makes nappy changes a bit less of a faff.
It got me thinking about making up nappy caddy gift boxes - so they're have some nappies, wipes and cream. Plus a few baby vests and long sleeves. Maybe a hairbrush, bubble bath and shampoo. A comforter or teddy, some muslins. Just a few ideas, but just really packed up with nice stuff.
Do you think people would buy these as presents for expecting mums or would it be a waste of time do you think? Obviously there's nothing stopping people doing their own but I was thinking of them as baby shower gifts etc.
Yabu - boring idea, don't bother.
Yanbu - give it a go!

I wouldn't buy them tbh, but some people would I am sure.

DrJump · 03/03/2026 20:28

I've seen this gift since I become pregnant about 15 years ago. So I assume people do buy them but it's not a new idea.

Merryoldgoat · 03/03/2026 20:28

I think they’re hard to make look ‘high end’ so not suitable for a gift imo. Doubt you’d make your money back.

Stompythedinosaur · 03/03/2026 20:57

I'm sorry, but no I don't think I would.

I also think you'll struggle to balance the cost of the items against the cost of the gift without making it seem cheap.

You need a proper business plan, see what sales similar businesses make and compare against the overheads.

naff

I personally wouldn’t buy this as a gift but I’m sure others would.

piano55 · 03/03/2026 21:02

I’m not sure what it is about them, but I don’t like the idea of gifts that have been made out of nappies or contain nappies from a pack that have been opened… I’d rather have a pack of unopened nappies, much more helpful and practical thanks!

Topseyt123 · 03/03/2026 21:02

Not something I would buy, but probably some people might.

Personally, I used to just keep some nappies, cream and cotton wool etc. upstairs and some more downstairs. No need for anything particular to hold them in.

Kingdomofsleep · 03/03/2026 21:05

The whole point of one of those caddies is they have inexpensive useful items that you personally have chosen.

I had one after each c section and they had things like my water bottle and the TV remote and the notebook where I log when I last took my painkillers, and the actual painkillers. And nappies and wipes and nappy cream.

I don't need or want gift versions of all that stuff!

It's like being given gift toilet roll. I do appreciate having toilet roll in the house and use it often, but i don't want it as a gift

Trouble is that one baby shower later, someone has 15 hairbrushes/bottles of shampoo and a kid who doesn't have more than 3cm of hair by the time they're five, 45 muslins and vests that don't fit by the time the kid is 6 weeks old, enough blankets to kit out a cattery - and still haven't got an insulated no spill coffee mug or anything for them, so they're drinking cold tea and wondering what exactly to do with a teddy bear clone army.

Tigerbalmshark · 03/03/2026 21:06

These already exist - DH’s company bought him one when he went on paternity leave with DS (I work for the NHS so got fuck all)

Yeah, no teddies for newborns, I also got given those... dc are at least 9mo before they want an actual teddy. Before that they just want a misshapen thingy thing made of muslin material that you can attach a teething toy to.

I don't really understand what a nappy caddy is for or how it's more helpful than keeping all changing supplies with the changing table in a drawer or on a shelf?

I feel like I must be misunderstanding what it is?

If you've just had a c section then you sometimes want to change the baby in bed next to you rather than get up 5× a night and trudge to another room

Just a storage item. Not everyone has a changing table (we just used a mat on the bathroom floor).

MrsBenevolent · 03/03/2026 21:13

I don't dislike the idea but all I would really want is nappies, wipes and cream (pp suggestions of tv remote is quite frankly gold).

The hairbrush and teddy...no. Just extra clutter.

TowerRavenSeven · 03/03/2026 21:15

I think it’s a nice idea but I wouldn’t buy one because I only buy unscented baby products. I don’t think you’d make much profit because I’ve found unless you use really inexpensive products individual baby products are pretty expensive. I’d save the idea as gifts, personally.

tutugogo · 03/03/2026 21:16

A friends daughter sells them, people do buy them as gifts, but to be honest you should make it customised because the issue with hers is she includes things not everyone wants especially by child number 2.

Bitzee · 03/03/2026 21:19

I had one in that I chucked a few nappies and a pack of water wipes in a repurposed Ikea storage box… but that’s all they are really, basic essentials ready to grab. I think what you’re talking about is a bespoke gift basket of carefully chosen new mum and baby items? Which would be a lovely gift for a friend. Don’t know how many people would buy from a 3rd party rather than creating themselves. But if you’re going to try it I wouldn’t call it a nappy caddy as that sounds similar to gifting someone loo roll.

Mochudubh · 03/03/2026 21:36

I had to look up what they were and the bags without contents seem to be anything from £45 at Fortnum & Mason down to £3.50 from Temu. I think if I was a new mum nowadays and I wanted such a thing I'd like to pick the style/fabric and either buy it myself or request a particular one on my "Baby Gift List" if such a thing exists.

It's a nice thought OP but unless you're going to be making bespoke caddies to order (unlikely if you have a new baby) it's probably not a viable money-making proposition.

GreenJellyBeans · 03/03/2026 21:43

My old boss was obsessed with trying to get people to chip in for these when people went on maternity. Honestly had to talk her out of it about 4 times in 18 months 🙈 they’re just tat and clutter - a big bag of nappies would be waaaay more welcome!

Creamcrackeredknackered · 03/03/2026 22:24

Ok thanks everyone. I think the consensus is don't bother! That's fine ☺️

Reminds me of the Finnish Baby Box idea.

I was sure I had read that this idea had spread and been commercialised in other countries. A quick Google and, sure enough, here is one example that admits being inspired by the Finnish idea https://www.littleun.co.uk/

Little'un Baby Box UK | New Born Baby Clothes

UK's first complete Baby Box. Little'un baby box acts as a crib and includes over 50 beautiful luxury products for mother and baby. A range of organic,100% cotton, fair trade, and environmentally friendly Clothes.

I have a 7 month old and another one on the way and I thought it was a great idea 😂
Anything Johnson’s would put me off though.
Aveeno is a great brand for sensitive newborn skin.
Boots do large, square cotton wool pads which we also used a lot for warm water nappy changes as wipes can be rough on newborn skin if used constantly.

Mochudubh · 04/03/2026 07:56

Agree @xOlive The market leading brands don't necessarily suit every baby or mum. I found Pampers really leaky and Sudocrem horrible and greasy compared to own brands. But a basket filled with own brands would look cheap so it's all down to personal choice. Which makes it tricky as a gift concept.
