To wonder why you would park right beside someone in a pretty empty car park?

Not the end of the world before someone comes for me to say you don't own the car park /people can park where they want.

I parked as far away from the shop as I could get as there is no parent and child spaces. Always park in same area due to this. Car park pretty much empty. 10+ spaces either side of me and same the row behind. I parked in the "front" space so I wouldn't have to reverse out. Space has a verge so I can get my child in and out. Someone has parked right up behind me and I could hardly get the pram in the boot. (probably should have picked the "back" space but assumed as car park so empty no one would be beside /behind me) they also have no car seat so can't see why they would need room etc as plenty of disabled spaces etc at shop front.

Why do people do this? I always assume if someone is parked far away / no other cars beside them they have likely done this for a reason.

AIBU to think I have parked "alone" for a reason and it's a bit weird to park right beside cars that have done this?

I think it's more odd to park the furthest away from another car in a car park. I'd probably pull up next to or infront of another car.

If drivers need space for a buggy or child or they're disabled there are usually allocated spaces specifically for them. It wouldn't cross my mind they'd park elsewhere expecting me to know their plan.

Also it's not odd- it means they don't want you parking next to them. But seems the hint is lost on some people.

Katiesaidthat · 03/03/2026 14:13

I usually park beside another car, it´s because it´s one less side for some idiot who can´t park to scratch/dent.

Badbadbunny · 03/03/2026 14:13

@Isekaied

people with zero parking skills need to should practice more so they don't have to always park next to others.

A huge YES to that. Why should people who can't be arsed to learn how to park and practice inconvenience other people??

Nail on the head. Some people just don't take the hint and continue to be arrogant and inconsiderate.

this is what i was thinking of too, it’s like when you get on a bus or train that’s empty and someone sits right next to you, or in an empty restaurant and someone chooses the table next to you i mean just why?!

That wouldnt happen to me.

If you're on a train or bus, and loads of space.

I put my stuff on the seat next to me. There is no excuse for them to try and sit next to you if there is loads of space. Just weirdos.

BunfightBetty · 03/03/2026 14:19

Because people are weird, OP. Nowt so queer as folk!

I think some maybe don't understand the etiquette.

I agree they're probably the same people who come and sit down right next to you on an otherwise empty beach, or right next to you on a train with loads of empty seats.

I have a theory they're probably also those people who can't grasp the concept of personal space, and are all up in your face when they talk to you, oblivious to the recoil.

I can park without another car for reference, I just find it easier not to, and even if I didn't, I'd still park close to another car because it makes more sense to me to keep similar objects in a space in a group. It's just how my brain works. I'd find it irritating to have all the objects randomly spread out.

I also find it odd that someone would want their car to be alone, where it is more likely to be targeted by thieves.

That being said, if there were one lone car and a group of cars closer together, I would park with the group.

nowayho · 03/03/2026 14:23

This happened to me the other day. Probably 60 + free parking spaces left. The Car park was dead.

This guy parks right next to me. He then struggles to get out of the car because he parked so close?! Why would you even do that?

There were tonnes of empty spaces in the same row. Why the need to park next to another car.

I can understand this.

The mind works the way it wants to.

For me.

Im always trying to figure out the biggest gap between things.

So if there were two cars with around spaces between them. I'd prob park about a space or 2 away from one of them. And hope if someone else came they did the same. I would try and make sure the whole area is equally covered. Be it a train or car park.

I consider the space as a whole.

Just would like some space around my car.

Oh yes! It's as if they didn't think far enough ahead to realise they'd have to actually open their door and get out, then it seems to come as a complete surprise to them that they have to squeeze out. I think some people are completely oblivious and devoid of any logic/critical thinking how the blatantly obvious consequences of their actions seem to come as a surprise to them!

Iheartmysmart · 03/03/2026 13:59

Well they shouldn’t park like fuckwits then should they. Why should I be inconvenienced because people buy stupid cars that are totally impractical for everyday use. And don’t say they probably need them for their lifestyle, I’ve yet to see one with a speck of mud on it.

Depends where you live. All the trucks around me are driven by farmers, gamekeepers and shepherds. Some days they're filthy, others they're immaculate because it's not unknown for people to wash their vehicles. Stop making assumptions about people.

ChirpyAmberLion · 03/03/2026 14:34

I always park the furthest away (especially in supermarkets) I can, unless it's peeing down. I've had too many instances of my car being scratched, parked sooo close that I've had to manouver across from the passenger side, or a car parked behind me practically hanging off my bumper.

Plus if I've bought myself a sneaky snack, I want to sit in my car in peace and eat it before driving home. 😁

Chatsbots · 03/03/2026 14:53

Happens to me all the time. I have a very nice big van, so park it miles away from anyone...always has a too close friend when I come back and I have to shimmy into it. It's very annoying.

nomas · 03/03/2026 15:19

It’s a lazy person using your car as a guide to park their own.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 03/03/2026 13:29

Why would parking in the lines be ’harder’ than anything else?

Well if you’re the only car in a stretch of empty bays yes you can see the lines either side of you but you can’t see the lines in front or behind you so you don’t know when you’ve ‘landed’ correctly.

Also when I learnt to drive I was taught to use other vehicles to help with position and I guess that’s stayed with me 🙂

That all said, given the option I won’t park directly next to a car in an empty car park. I like the space to open my doors fully. But I absolutely would go bumper to bumper with a car on the other side of a space on the basis that they’ve done the hard work of working out where the front/back lines are 😆

Badbadbunny · 03/03/2026 14:05

DH always complains about the same at urinals - several empty, but some moron always has to stand right next to him. He uses a cubicle where there's one free as it annoys him so much!

I don’t blame him! If I could have moved to another cubicle, I would have.

DogBagKite · 03/03/2026 15:53

My car is really small. I am very short. My wing mirrors are fiddly to adjust and have to be fine nanually and I would have to adjust them to see white lines on passenger side which makes parking take longer. I don't need to faff adjusting mirrors to park next to a car.

AutumnLover1990 · 03/03/2026 15:54

Security. We've found this happening a lot. We have a Tesla so perhaps people are thinking because we've got cameras, then their car would be safer too?

DogBagKite · 03/03/2026 15:59

Typo - "done manually" not fine nanually 😂

ValidPistachio · 03/03/2026 16:00

My mum likes to park adjacent to occupied spaces. She feels the other cars ‘protect’ hers, plus no one can hit her car while parking alongside her, if those spaces are already occupied.

Goditsmemargaret · 03/03/2026 16:06

Five years ago I parked my car separate from everyone else. When I returned my cat converter (I think) had been stolen. Apparently it's quite common. It was a massive pita getting it sorted, insurance etc - all so some twat could make 50 quid.

So now I'm always close to other cars.

LeedsLoiner · 03/03/2026 16:16

My driving instructor to me to always park next to or near a car that's worth more than yours.
That way the people getting in and out of it are unlikely to want to bash their car so they'll be more careful and if anyone's going to break into or steal a car they'll go for the better one...

"The Rules" assuming there are five urinals or a long "trough".

First man - end
Second man - other end
Third man - middle
Fourth man - between first/second or second/third depending on who looks like they are going to finish first.
Fifth man - the remaining space.

Some people are just weird. We find it all the time. Also when there are loads of empty seats on the bus or train but someone has to sit next to you or there are loads of empty tables in a cafe and some has to sit on the table next to you.

Drives me mad.
