How much extra school / educational work do parents do with kids in year 1 ?

I was always pretty chilled about this. Reading daily, maybe some phonics practise, a bit of writing occasionally and maths in a real world context. Nothing too formal and apart from the reading, not every day.

I get the impression there are some really smart kids at my DDs school and some very keen parents who are pushing hard already. It is a private school, but not a super academic one.

We do the same as you really.
DD is in Year 1, turned 6 in January and "is smart" - as in she's a free reader and doing Year 2 maths. We don't do formal work at home ever.

We just incorporate the learning into everyday life, writing notes, shopping lists etc she has a bit of pocket money every so often and she has to work out how much she has, what coins to give etc. she does things like weigh ingredients out for recipes. Plays card games etc.... that's enough I feel!

My colleague makes his daughter do spellings and tests and all sorts every day.

We do exactly what the school suggests/asks of us. Reading every day (although we bad at not bothering through the holidays), weekly homework challenge. That’s pretty much it.

Writing practice is things like writing birthday cards, maybe a post card to granny every now and then. They love arts and crafts so encourage a bit of that.

No extra maths or spellings.
