👌 okay!

It’s certainly not new on here. I notice a rise in ‘dreadful SiL’ threads.

SatinPajamas · 02/03/2026 20:37

I don't understand the issue everyone on MN has with the word chavvy. It's been around since I was a child, everyone knows exactly what it means so it is a very effective descriptor. I've never met anyone in real life who has a problem with it and it's pretty normal to hear it in the Midlands. Just another word for a group of people who all act the same like townies, country bumpkins, poshos or any other term you like. The only difference I can see is no one wants to be a chav, but then don't be one?

notmuchtoit · 02/03/2026 20:38

There seems to be a 'chav' troll about.

It's a word that just looks down at poverty

I agree. That thread about chavvy names was grim.

You can be living in poverty without being a chav.

Yep, and you can be a chav without living in poverty! There are well off chavs, chav is a way of dressing, behaving, talking. The phrase "It costs a lot to look this cheap" comes to mind.

notmuchtoit · 02/03/2026 21:20

No one has ever called a Middle Class or Upper Class person a Chav. Chav means WC on MN and always has,

AccordingToWhom · 02/03/2026 21:26

I've noticed too and it's all a bit weird and grim. Mumsnet is the only place I still see that word bandied about too.

But it's perfectly clear that not all WC people are chavs and the threads I've read have not said that being WC is synonymous with being a chav.

Chavs are a particular subset of the WC. I bet everyone who hears the word has a mental picture of what a chav looks like and how they behave, it's a good descriptor for a certain type of person.

As pp have said it's not to do with poverty, plenty of poor people are not chavs, there are many people who are wealthy but are still chavs, I'd call many of those Instagram influencer types chavs even though they rake in money.

Is it a regional thing? I'm sure I only heard it first about 20 years ago...

Hotandpointy · 02/03/2026 21:35

Plenty of wealthy chavs about, it’s definitely not a money thing. It’s more about your behaviour, your values, your manners, your general vibe.

It stands for ‘council housed and violent’ now thats a grim way to describe a person who you perceive as lower than yourself!

Rubbish. You don’t need to be poor to be a chav, and not all poor people are chavs.

The chavviest person I know is a lot better off than me and wears ridiculous false eyelashes, massive plastic nails and is dripping in tacky pandora bracelets. Calls everyone BAYYYYYYYBE and loves designer handbags. She's always arguing with people over stupid things, has no decorum and is also usually dripping in naff gold chains, which actually cost a fortune but looks awful.

Certainly not poor, but chavvy AF.

notmuchtoit · 03/03/2026 20:46

Are designer handbags,Pandora and gold chains considered 'chavvy' ? says who?

Well, no, it was and itwasn't, it was about someone asking about how to name a child and its consequences. I found it interesting. And if MN bandies it about a lot, that's because this is an anonymous forum where these things can be openly discussed. And it did bring up a lot of conversation.

Catterbat · 03/03/2026 20:48

Yes it is used to describe the lower classes and it is offensive. If you’re arguing otherwise you don’t know the real meaning of the word and should maybe look that up.
