To be annoyed at the Aldi staff

Outandabout43 · 02/03/2026 19:26

I've noticed in the last few months that whenever I go to Aldi the checkout staff are always chatting to colleagues over their headset. Ive noticed it in a lot of different Aldis that I have been to. I wouldn't mind so much if the conversation was in regards to the store / work, but more often then not its about plans for the weekend etc. I'm not saying its all staff as some really are friendly and lovely, but am i wrong to think the ones that do are rather rude? It really gets my back up, the same as when the customer is having a phone conversation when being served.

Lidl and Aldi…. Always appalling staff.

Hesperatum · 02/03/2026 19:40

In our local Lidl, the staff are lovely, friendly and helpful. The staff in Sainsbury’s, the less said, the better.

Maybeitllneverhappen · 02/03/2026 19:40

All the staff at my local Aldi (Fleet) are great. So polite and really helpful. I don't think it's fair to make such a sweeping statement!

I think she’s talking about those specific staff. She does say she isn’t talking about all of them because some are nice.

thaisweetchill · 02/03/2026 20:13

Our local Lidl do this and I find it so rude. I’m unsure if they’re talking to me or not so I respond and they look at me funny!

dadtoateen · 02/03/2026 20:15

Do they carry out the job to the required standard? I can only assume so….
does it hamper your time at the till? Doubt it.

TheNoisyGreyLion · 02/03/2026 20:23

Yes! Our local Aldi they are always shouting at each other about who’s going on a break next or what till to open etc. I find it really weird and it makes the whole place feel noisy and chaotic.

mumof5five · 02/03/2026 20:23

Superdrug staff are THE WORST for this

Snap, only it was in B and M. Noticed it's now happening in aldi and lidl so the cheaper stores. Maybe they aren't paid enough to talk to the great unwashed 👀

HappyMuma · 02/03/2026 20:27

It doesn’t actually bother me. I’m not customer facing in my job, I get to chat with my colleagues at my desk. I don’t begrudge anyone else doing it.

DawnBreaks · 02/03/2026 20:31

Our local Aldi staff are lovely! Maybe they do have the odd word with colleagues, but it doesn’t affect their work in the slightest! Live and let live!

I totally agree!

CuppaTandBicky · 02/03/2026 20:32

This is a peeve of mine.
I'm quite an awkward person and also find it hard to hear clearly when I'm in a noisy place.
Sometimes at the till they'll say something and I have no idea whether they're talking to me or to the person on their head set. I've answered them before thinking they were addressing me but they weren't. Conversely I've likely ignored them thinking they were talking to the headset.
It stresses me out.
I don't see why they need to use it other than for specific questions or instructions (I.e help with something) but they literally use it to have a casual chat.
I know it likely bothers me more than the average person but it has literally made me want to go elsewhere sometimes... If it wasn't so much cheaper!

FlowerFairyDaisy · 02/03/2026 20:36

I could understand you wanting to complain if your reason for going there is for a friendly chat. I think that’s unlikely so I’d let it go. I’m sure they’re not doing it constantly.

Tontostitis · 02/03/2026 20:38

My local Sainsbury do this, look you right in the eyes whilst serving and talk but they are talking to each other. It's really disconcerting.

Tacohill · 02/03/2026 20:43

It doesn’t bother me at all but I can completely see what you mean.

Sometimes I answer them thinking that they’re talking to me and they’re not.

I am not that old but remember being refused service in a shop because I was on my phone.
I remember talking on your phone whilst doing your shopping was the height of rudeness and yet it seems that it’s ok for shop staff to do it now.

I think stacking shelves etc is fine but it’s not very professional when you’re at the till and they’re talking to someone else.

Maybe it's a bit of light relief after dealing with difficult and rude customers all day.

TheHillIsMine · 02/03/2026 20:46

I really dislike it when one staff member apologises to another for needing them to come and serve a customer.

HeisseWeisseSchokolade · 02/03/2026 20:49

They are there to work, not to socialise. I hate it when I'm in a shop waiting to be served and the staff are ignoring you to have a private conversation.

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 02/03/2026 20:49

Ive got 2 local Aldis. One does this, and the other doesn't. I find it as rude as if I was on my phone while they are scanning my shopping. It's 5 minutes, I don't want to hear about how pissed you got at the weekend. Just wait until you've finished serving. Doesn't bother me if they're stacking shelves, but its just plain rude when serving a customer. Why can't people do anything these days without constantly having to phone someone and tell them all about it? 🙄

Aussiesgettingsmashed · 02/03/2026 20:54

Never any bugger on the tills in Lidl.

Berlinlover · 02/03/2026 20:55

I work in a supermarket in Ireland and my Polish colleagues speak in Polish to each other while serving English speaking customers. I think it’s extremely bad manners but when management asked them to speak English on the shop floor one of them brought in some nonsense in writing about it being her “right” to speak Polish on the shop floor.

Cherryicecreamx · 02/03/2026 21:03

This would bother me too. I haven't noticed it myself but I'm all about customer service (also having worked in customer facing roles). It seems so rude to be having a conversation with someone whilst serving someone else!
Some people's only interaction that day could be at one of these shops and I'm sure we all like to feel like a valued customer. I definitely choose where I shop depending on how I am treated. I'm surprised management hasn't picked up on this.

PurpleCoo · 02/03/2026 21:05

The staff are the same at my Aldi as well, it's extremely unprofessional. I don't take any notice though because it doesn't effect my experience as I use the self checkout tills. It's annoying when you are using the checkouts though and they are talking about their weekend over the headset while serving customers.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 02/03/2026 21:06

Well exactly. You don't want minimum wage staff talking to each other.
My local Aldi is fine. Sometimes the staff talk to each other but so what? It doesn't stop them serving me. Aldi is not well known for customer service. It's quick service. If you want to chat go somewhere else.
