How much sleep is normal for a 61 year old

For those who are in their early 60's how much are your dh sleeping? Mine is 61 & every time he sits down to watch tv he's gone. I can see us being perpetually asleep once we're both retired. Have you found it gets better when you're finally retired? He stll has a long week, on his feet for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. He gets between 6-8 hours asleep, but snores heavily & up a couple of times in the night. He's straight back off again.
I'm not working at the moment so I do all of the housework, cooking & shopping. Good home cooked food, try to keep it balanced.
Maybe it's because he feels the cold so is by the radiator. He's on high blood pressure tablets & could do with losing a stone.
Is this normal tl be crashing out every night & half the weekend?

If he snores heavily and falls asleep quickly he might well have sleep apnoea. Get him to look at an online set of diagnostic questions and then see his GP about it if he ticks the boxes. It could change both your lives if his brain starts to get the oxygen it needs at night

Has he been tested for sleep apnea? The symptoms you describe sound familiar.

Sorry cross post.

My DH is 65 and still working full time but like yours, he sleeps so much! He’s off at the moment on AL. He is literally sleeping constantly. Am infuriated as I have insomnia and sleep about 2/3 hours a night do it seems very unfair!

oh and don’t get me started on the toilet trips…

SMM2020 · 01/03/2026 21:46

My OH is 44 this year and he can pass out by 9pm most nights - he’s a landscaper though and his job is crazy physical some days. I think it depends - if he’s falling asleep at 9 and waking at 5, this is pretty normal for most men I know who have labour intensive jobs. If you’re worried though, maybe visit the Dr especially with the snoring.

Could he have sleep apnoea? My dad used to fall asleep on the sofa frequently. When he finally went to the doctor he was diagnosed with sleep apnoea and sleeps much better at night now he has a cpap machine, doesn't fall asleep on the sofa anymore

Willowskyblue · 01/03/2026 21:48

DH is 64, very fit but he’s asleep on the sofa by 8pm. He does leave at 5am three mornings a week so that doesn’t help.
I’m 61 and work full time. In the past two months I feel so tired after work and could do with a snooze!

Weedropofred · 01/03/2026 21:49

If he snores a lot then is it possible he might have sleep apnoea leading to poor quality sleep? I've just watched a channel 4 programme about sleep, on a couple of nights ago, and there was a bit about sleep apnoea on it. Might be worth him mentioning to GP and getting a referral for investigations.

On his feet all day is pretty tiring though.

My husband is 64, still working as a roofer. Gets up through the night to wee, snores and is asleep more or less as soon as he sits down. He cannot wait to retire.

Do you have a snooze then?

MyCheekyEagle · 01/03/2026 22:14

Dh does leave at 545am & gets home about 445pm. He's on his feet most of the day to be fair.
Are your dh very tired over the weekend when they're not working & still the same?
The only time I see a real improvement is when we're out & about on holiday. It's great then, but his health needs to be considered if it's abnormal. Seems like it's totally nomal for weekdays.
He gets a lie in both weekend days. Yesterday & today he's had it easy in terms of doing stuff, but still very sleepy by teatime.

Before I retired I promised myself a daily nap once I had retired, but I haven’t needed it and I’m 68 this year. I’m not surprised he’s knackered with 5am starts and 8hours on his feet. But the snoring and very heavy sleep do sound worth investigating for sleep apnoea.

Your post reads as though your husband is still "working" being out of the house and on his feet for so long. I'd not think of him as retired at the moment.

when I was 61 I was still sleeping in the same pattern I had When I was working. Asleep by 10pm awake from 6 am. It took me five years to break the habit.

I've never been able to sleep downstairs unless I'm ill/ recovering from illness. So me nodding off in the arm chair for me.
