Are your energy bills currently in credit?

caniquitwork · 01/03/2026 21:33

I am £98 in credit, but the energy provider says I can’t reduce my direct debit - surely being in credit at the end of winter is good? I am
paying £260 on the 8th so then I will be even more in credit?
yabu - keep payment as suggested by energy provider
yanbu - reduce your payment, they are overcharging you

Yes, 400 pounds in credit!

MotherOfRatios · 01/03/2026 21:34

Yes £670 and they are recommending I increase my DD from £100 to £290

herbalteabag · 01/03/2026 21:35

Yes but not by much! I think just over £100. They wanted to up my direct debit but I find that making a one off payment is a way around that. I'm with Octopus.

DramaQueenlady · 01/03/2026 21:35

Can you not adjust your direct debit on the app. They can't stop you.

They can disallow it if they think it's too low.

Pricesandvices · 01/03/2026 21:36

Yes. I always keep it in credit. Peace of mind.

InterestedDad37 · 01/03/2026 21:36

Yeah, about 80 quid.
I keep a close eye on it these days, but some years back, I noticed I was nearly 500 in credit. To be fair to them (Eon) it was very easy to get it back. These days they seem to reduce it for me as and when it seems appropriate - they did so last month, down by 15 quid a month.

Pickledonion1999 · 01/03/2026 21:38

Yes and our dd has just reduced by about £40 I think.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2026 21:39

Am about £30 in credit. I adjust the direct debit if I need to.

BarbarianBabs · 01/03/2026 21:39

I’m with octopus and I just email them asking for X amount to be refunded to me when it gets over £100 in credit. They usually reply within 24 hours and I have the amount refunded to me within 2 weeks or less.

we generally don’t have the heating on that much as we don’t feel the cold so tend to get a refund every 3 or 4 months

Travellingraspberry · 01/03/2026 21:41

Yes by about £200 and direct debit has just been reduced by £20 a month by Octopus

TofuTuesday · 01/03/2026 21:43

I was by £500 so got it refunded (octopus) now in credit by about £200

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 01/03/2026 21:44

What date was your last bill issued and how much was the usage for the last month. I'm currently in credit but I'm using more than my monthly payment so its still reducing and I would expect march and April to still be above reducing my credit more.

PurpleCoo · 01/03/2026 21:45

I'm £275 in credit, which seems ridiculous for the end of winter. I'm going to adjust my payment and ask for a refund. This thread has been a good prompt

JasmineMac · 01/03/2026 21:46

My statement was emailed today, £198 in credit.
I'm with Octopus and I can adjust my DD up or down. I've always gone with their recommended amount, so I don't know if there is a bottom line I couldn't adjust below? Presuming there would be.

Conspiracytheories · 01/03/2026 21:47

I'm £61.70 in credit but my direct debit of £66 will go in to the account tomorrow.
I'm usually frugal with my heating but this winter i definitely used it much more than in the past.

BrickBiscuit · 01/03/2026 21:49

£1132.76 in credit, DD £38, this month's usage to date £76.

MyCheekyEagle · 01/03/2026 21:58

Yes. I'm with Octopus & aboyt £250 in credit. Every year at the review of my account they say they were increasing the direct debit to meet the forecasted usage.
I just refuse, telling them to let the credit balance be used up first or I will go elsewhere.

Vaxtable · 01/03/2026 22:11

Yes, but you will find that the companies like you to keep at least one bills worth of funds. So if your last bill was say £150 they won’t give you back anything less

Talkingfrog · 01/03/2026 22:14

Years ago when we were with swalec they once wanted to inrease the monthly dd by about £5, even though we had enough credit at the end of winter to have a refund.
I phoned and spoke to someone, who thought it as odd as I did. It wouldn't let her put it back to the original amount, so she made it 50p more per month.

More recently, after I had set it up online when swalec, and ovo have wanted to increase the amount, but I wasn't happy with the change, I went in online and changed it back myself.

There Has been times when they gave dropped payment too.

RedRiverShore6 · 01/03/2026 22:14

No, about £200 in debit but it's the summer coming up so it will probably all work out, it was worked out for the year in August when I fixed it. I pay about £150 a month

Oxo01 · 02/03/2026 00:33

No but I do not pay by DD
I send a metre reading in each month and pay straight away which I dont plan to change that in the near future.

blackcatclub25 · 02/03/2026 00:50

£74 in credit with a pending payment of £84, last few bills have been about £86

WallaceinAnderland · 02/03/2026 00:55

Yes I'm in credit and they recommended increasing my monthly DD. Er, no thanks.

Tuliptana · 02/03/2026 01:00

Yes £48.60. DD is being reduced by EON from £83.60 to £70.
It is calculated by EON. Summer bills usually £39 for Electric and £12 for gas.
