just interested if i live very frugally or not? i am single parent with a 18 year old and 20 year old. both in full time education. have little part time jobs to be able to pay own insurance but not enough to contribute. also have 3 dogs, 2 giant breeds.after paying household bills i budget £250 for a week to include all food, dog food, fuel, and any odd bits we need. just interested to how others budget?

I don’t know how you do it. I wouldn’t manage.

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 01/03/2026 19:02

That’s similar to what we budget. It’s me a teenager (who eats a ton) and occasionally the husband when home from sea. Could spend more some weeks but less others just depends what’s on offer and if I’ve been to Costco. Averages around the £250 a week mark when I look at it over a 3 month period.

NewYearNewMee · 01/03/2026 19:05

We spend that on food alone, not including fuel / cat bits / other shopping or anything like that. I would struggle to spend that for us! Sounds frugal to me. I’m sure some people spend £50 and have change though 😂

What are the giant dogs, what do they eat?. It seems like a lot to me, but I'm on the state pension. 2 adults,2 border collies and a teen GC staying most weeks.

WhamBamThankU · 01/03/2026 19:09

After bills I spend about £250 a week on all food, petrol, household necessities etc

goz · 01/03/2026 19:09

I don’t do a weekly budget, but if I was to tot up all spending, food, petrol, kids bits, activities, an Amazon order, something we needed for the house etc it would probably go a fair bit past £250.

Myself and two sons plus 3 cats. The main shop is £70 . If I go up town to the butchers at least £20 + . So including cat food/litter easily a £100-120. Bills are done monthly

Me & 17yo ds - I spend £60 on food, £20 on diesel, assorted bits and pieces as needed, £35 on classes, maybe £150 a week.

Until I hit a pot hole, then last week cost an extra £220 😟

After all bills are paid, then we spend about £10 a week on petrol, £100 on food (4 adults in home), £20 pets. That’s it I think?

OSTMusTisNT · 01/03/2026 19:44

Probably £150 on food shopping, cleaning products, wine and fuel (DH, me, 2xcats) this is including butcher meat and bakery bread/rolls which isn't the cheapest option.

Some weeks can be less though as i tend to buy the biggest pack of items (laundry, loo roll etc) as it works out cheaper per use.

Overthebow · 01/03/2026 19:52

After bills and also after saving, we have around £600 a week for 2 adults and 2 young DCs. That would a split between food and other household things, kids activities, days out, the odd takeaway and meal out then DH and I have spending money each.

Nannyfannybanny · 02/03/2026 13:31

Mine would be less than £100, some week the shopping is £50 some £80 Lidl. Monthly boring top up, toilet rolls of 12kg bag dog kibble. Fuel about £50 a month now,petrol.. I do have my hair done every 2 months...my treat.dh cuts his own.
