Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

Not all of us are so narrow-minded as to reject whole countries and its culture, history, food, and people because of a government that said people didn't choose.

Nah only trash goes to Dubai.

I don't believe a WORD of all the halo-polishers here doing down Dubai! Not a word of it! I reckon if they had the chance to escape dreary Britain for a bit and live at the crossroads of a continent, they'd grab it with both hands! Dubai is much more than its dodgy royal family's bad deeds, and it's a great base from which to explore the ME. (Not at the moment, obvs.) Plus, how many of the halo-polishers have never holidayed in a place with problems? I bet they're all sitting there in glass houses! That's the trouble with throwing stones - you have to be spotless, and I bet they're not!

Sitting in the West and judging on high does nothing to open one's mind to aspects of a country other than its bad stuff.

But you enjoy your holidays to the Lake District!

Like I said, oh my dear sweet summer child. 😘

So much innocence and naivety.

I will bet my house that YOU wouldn't go there to live.

At least it's a bit more dry there than the UK though. 😂

And the sheer irony of YOU bashing 'narrow minded' people not wanting to move to Dubai, and then mocking the Lake District. (Which is absolutely bloody stunning by the way. You should really visit one day. You have clearly never been!)

Everyone going on about women's rights.... you are probably correct if we are talking 10-20 years ago, but there's been a mass push for liberalisation and westernisation. Even in Saudi Arabia, women now go there for solo travelling.

Regarding the migrants workers issues, yes there have been issues in the past, but the governments are working to improve things and protect them.

Modern day slavery and human trafficking is in the UK as well.

lol

This reminds me of being in Egypt and other holiday makers being disgusted when they found out that they were in Africa.

The lifestyle is great, as was being near the top in every society built and relying on slavery. Best of luck.

Why were they disgusted? Extreme reaction to say the least...

What a load of nonsense.

Your response is nonsense. Do you think its made up?:) having lived in the ME for many years, and still have local and expat friends there, they have many different experiences, those were just examples of some lived experiences which shocked me.

Perhaps they aren't common, but they certainly happened. However - it is your perogative to keep your head in the sand

Clonakilla · 01/03/2026 22:19

The company will rethink, surely? They won’t want more staff exposed.

Expat lifestyles are usually enjoyed by standing on the backs of impoverished people. That’s why they don’t appeal to everyone, regardless of the location. I think it’s pretty normal to really think carefully about what you want your children to learn, and how you want to live. Proximity to Iran wouldn’t be the biggest issue for many.

Jerys · 01/03/2026 22:09

Can I ask where have you been in the ME and what your favourite country/city is?

I went to Dubai for four days in 2004, because I was working for the Government of Dubai in London for seven months. I worked for the DTCM, Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing, which had an office very near Trafalgar Square. It hasn't really been on my radar since then, I just smell a rat when the halo-polishers start. I can't stand virtue-signalling and all the posturing, because I think it's mostly fake and I just don't believe them. I bet they've been to loads of problematic places and continue to do so. I much prefer vice-signalling. At least it's honest.

I experienced the Dubai offices and the Dubai gov HQ in that one visit and met many locals. Did you know that men and women don't touch during the wives' menstruation not because they are seen to be "unclean" but because they both spend the period of time grieving for the soul that could have been, but wasn't? That's the kind of information you don't come across when your mind remains firmly closed and your feet in only perfect places.

One night we were in the desert, and I walked behind this tent, and saw a row of Arab men in their robes facing towards Mecca, eyes closed, and clearly having a moment of deep spirituality. It was very moving.

I am not a sweet summer child; I have worked for the Government of Dubai and thus had my mind opened - see my post above. And yes, I have been to the Lake District. Stayed in a youth hotel in Cockermouth and walked round Buttermere. (I think - was decades ago.) It's absolutely gorgeous, the LD is one of my favourite places in the world.

Grieving for the soul that could have been.

You read my experience of working for the Dubai Government. I don't know what to tell you. 🤷‍♀️ Most of it took place in the London office, if that makes it any better!

I know that having your mind opened is a very painful thing, but try to be open to the lived experiences of others!

Unfortunately, you will never get anywhere with some people. They are not interested in expanding their knowledge and understanding of other people or other cultures. They have the historical Western arrogance that their way of doing things is the best and only way. No wonder we are in the state we are in currently when so many Westerners think like this.

EdithBond · 01/03/2026 22:30

Not the best time to move there.

Rather a sitting duck, location-wise, should Iran decide to strike it, which appears to be the case. Plus sizeable US population and assets. Most shot down by air defences but still makes a lot of noise.

A war zone is perhaps not the lifestyle you’re looking for.

HoskinsChoice · 01/03/2026 22:33

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:53

I knew it was in middle east Gulf and obviously Iran is in that area too but I hadn't studied the map in great detail until today.

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there. Then something like this happens and you get a reality check

Dh going to speak to his work tomorrow. I'm sure they wouldn't send him if it escalates

'Everyone wants to move there'. 🤣

We loved Dubai marina at night and had such tasty food. The view from the Burj was fantastic.

Compared to how long it took to build the shard, they did the Burj faster by not having such a silly planing and approval process with a public inquiry.

Exactly.

The trip I went on, which was taking a group of UK travel agents to Dubai to experience the holiday product that they were selling, was run in conjunction with Gulf Air. The GA chappie who accompanied us was half-Liverpudlian and half-Bahranian. He had grown up in Bahrain but had also spent time living in London. Anyway, it was his belief that democracy can never work in the ME. Which was interesting. I didn't get to talking about it further - trip matters probably intervened - but I'm guessing he meant a benign dictatorship, which Dubai is compared to regimes like North Korea. As in, it's relatively easy to avoid pissing off the Dubai government, and its citizens have good, free healthcare.

How would you know what my life experiences are? I haven't lived in the UK for twenty years, smartypants, although I don't live in the ME and have spent much time back in the UK taking care of my (now deceased) parents.

@FloofBunny

’Halo-polishers’, ‘virtue signalling’.

See, here’s the thing that hasn’t occurred to you; you’re operating on a whole other plane to the rest of us. And just to be clear, I absolutely don’t mean that as a compliment.

Those buildings and infrastructure were built on the backs of dead slaves. That alone is enough for the rest of us who are not morally bereft to realise that that place is a problem. And that is without sifting through the mountain of other problematic matters about Dubai.

Your comments say an awful lot about you… But what it says you won’t begin to be able to grasp.

I don't know why you say "claiming to be there" in 2004. I was there. I worked for the Gov and was describing my lived experience of being there as a Gov worker. I'm sorry it blows your mind so much that you have to scoff, but foreign countries around the world do have tourism offices in London and they employ Londoners, as I was at that time.
